Book The Mask of Anarchy and Frankenstein A Vindication of the Rights of Woman

Download or read book The Mask of Anarchy and Frankenstein A Vindication of the Rights of Woman written by Katya Schodts and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2015-11-27 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2015 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0 ("sehr gut"), Free University of Berlin (Institute of English Language and Literature), course: Romanticism and Revolution: The Shelley Circle., language: English, abstract: When I read Percy Bysshe Shelley’s The Mask of Anarchy (The Mask) for the first time, I was immediately captivated by the important role that appears to be assigned to what Ashley J. Cross calls “a series of connected female figures”. A female Hope is given the strength to stop the excesses of an unjust society, and it is a female voice that calls upon the men of England to “Rise like Lions after slumber”. Apparently, The Mask’s men are passive. Father time waits “Fumbling with his palsied hands”, and the men of England have been chained while asleep. This sharply contrasts to how women and men are depicted in Frankenstein. The novel’s women largely comply with contemporary gender norms: passive, docile, and dependent daughters, sisters, wives and mothers who are confined to the domestic sphere. They are not given a voice and are recurrently depicted as victims of a society dominated by ambitious, active men. In The Mask, by contrast, women not only survive tyrants, but they also emerge as highly influential forces in the establishment of an imagined future egalitarian society. Frankenstein has long been accepted as a novel that embraces women’s rights. Some critics have also read The Mask in the context of 19th century society and its attitudes towards gender. In my thesis, I will argue that both works incorporate a strong call for women’s rights and that in spite of a different approach, the similarities between them go far deeper than they appear on the surface. I will emphasize the influence of Mary Wollstonecraft’s ideas on both writings. They seem to have been an invaluable source of information and reveal an inextricable bond between The Mask, Frankenstein and Wollstonecraft’s writings.

Book excerpt: “A remarkable creation, a baroque opera of grief, laced with lines of haunting beauty and profundity.” —The Washington Post Now in paperback, the bold, genre-defying book that asked: What if Mary Shelley had not invented Frankenstein's monster at all but had met him when she was a girl of eight, sitting by her mother's grave, and he came to her unbidden? In a riveting mix of fact and poetic license, Laurie Sheck gives us the "monster" in his own words: recalling how he was "made" and how Victor Frankenstein abandoned him; pondering the tragic tale of the Shelleys and the intertwining of his life with Mary's (whose fictionalized letters salt the narrative, along with those of her nineteenth-century intimates); taking notes on all aspects of human striving--from Gertrude Stein to robotics to the Northern explorers whose lonely quest mirrors his own--as he tries to understand the strange race that made yet shuns him, and to find his own freedom of mind.

Book excerpt: These three works of fiction - two by Mary Wollstonecraft, the radical author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, and one by her daughter Mary Shelley, creator of Frankenstein - are powerfully emotive stories that combine passion with forceful feminist argument. In Mary Wollstonecraft's Mary, the heroine flees her young husband in order to nurse her dearest friend, Ann, and finds genuine love, while Maria tells of a desperate young woman who seeks consolation in the arms of another man after the loss of her child. And Mary Shelley's Matilda - suppressed for over a century - tells the story of a woman alienated from society by the incestuous passion of her father. Humane, compassionate and highly controversial, these stories demonstrate the strongly original genius of their authors. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Book Freedom Justice Christian Counter Culture

Download or read book Freedom Justice Christian Counter Culture written by Michael C. Elliott and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-02-19 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Michael Elliott has had a more than unusually varied career. Born in New Zealand, he first did postgraduate studies in Boston with Harvey Cox and Joseph Fletcher, at the same time joining the Berrigan brothers in protest action against the Vietnam War and taking part on a march on Washington. He then moved to London's South Bank to work with Bishop John Robinson in the inner city, from where he went with the Church Missionary Society to the Middle East, before returning to England to work in race relations. Eventually back home in New Zealand, he worked in development education, which also involved a stay in Cuba. From all this has grown his book. It is not an autobiography, but rather the beginning of a handbook for activists, indicating the issues that need to be addressed and the strategies that need to be tested by Christians in the modern world. Firmly rooted in the Bible, written in the tradition of liberation theology but arising out of the living conditions of the United States and Britain, it offers specific guidelines for the thought and practice of Christians who are dissatisfied with the world and the churches as they are today.

Book excerpt: Howard Brenton is one of Britain's best-known and most controversial dramatists The Romans in Britain was the play that brought calls to bring back censorship when it was first staged at the National in 1980. It conjures up "an era that is culturally as well as historically remote which is a notoriously difficult task, but Mr Brenton acheives it with great skill and effect...a very good play indeed." In The Thirteenth Night: "He sets the characters of Shakespeare to find the elements in the British character which could transform an Englishman into a Stalin, and closes in on his creation with an overall wit to match his horror" (The Times). The Genius "is teeming with memorable stage pictures, and bristling with Brenton's very best writing: flinty, impassioned, explosive" (Financial Times). In Bloody Poetry "Brenton is doing something markedly ambitious in this phantasmagoric play. He is celebrating the idea of the committed artist who seeks to stir and provoke sullen, defeated bourgeois England. At the same time, with clear-eyed honesty, he shows how difficult it is to upset the moral order" (The Guardian). Greenland is "on the one hand a cry of disillusionment with established political forms, on the other it is full of typically lively Brentonesque satire and lampoons...Brenton's message is a welcome antidote to the madness in which we all now seem to be living and a sharp blast against patriarchy as well as other attendant woes" (City Limits).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Frankenstein is now widely read, little attention has been paid to the considerable corpus of Mary Shelly's other works. Ironically, the excitment of the last decade of faminist approaches to Frankenstein has obscured the persona of its author. This book presents the "other Mary Shelley": the writer whose shrewd assessments of Romanticism, gender, and society resonate strongly in the setting of contemporary politics, culture, and feminism.

Book Critical Theory Today

Download or read book Critical Theory Today written by Lois Tyson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-09-10 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Critical Theory Today is the essential introduction to contemporary criticial theory. It provides clear, simple explanations and concrete examples of complex concepts, making a wide variety of commonly used critical theories accessible to novices without sacrificing any theoretical rigor or thoroughness. This new edition provides in-depth coverage of the most common approaches to literary analysis today: feminism, psychoanalysis, Marxism, reader-response theory, new criticism, structuralism and semiotics, deconstruction, new historicism, cultural criticism, lesbian/gay/queer theory, African American criticism, and postcolonial criticism. The chapters provide an extended explanation of each theory, using examples from everyday life, popular culture, and literary texts; a list of specific questions critics who use that theory ask about literary texts; an interpretation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby through the lens of each theory; a list of questions for further practice to guide readers in applying each theory to different literary works; and a bibliography of primary and secondary works for further reading.
