But as civilization progressed, there came a marked divergence be tween the sexes. Woman became more and more the laborer of the kitchen or the entertainer of the parlor, and farther and farther withdrawn from the hardening contact with the world. At the present there is a partial return to primitive conditions. The calisthenic exercises of the schools, the athletic pursuits of the more leisurely classes, the better knowledge of hygiene, have produced a more hardy physique while the entrance of women into many trades and professions, and the coeducation of most schools and colleges have produced more of mental equality. In this new phase upon which we are entering, the present aim of educators is to obvi ate any possible minimizing of real mental sexual differences. A reverend doctor may assure me a thousand times that I have an immortal spirit but, providing I could see no reason for having an immortal spirit, it would, doubtless, be a long time before I became a full convert to his doctrine. I ask him, How do you know'that. I have an immortal spirit? Did you ever see or hear, or have any, tangible communication with a spin itual existence, after it had thrown off its mortal organism? The learned doctor answers me in the negative. I remark, in return, Perhaps you are acquainted with some fortunate individual, of high moral integrity, in whom you place implicit confidence, who has had tangible and indubitable evidence of the soul's immortality. Again I receive a cold negative, and am informed that In other ages of the world, God spake to humanity by holy prophets, inspired men, Who acted as they were acted upon by the Supreme Intelligence. In this life we use the same powers of personality which we use in our ordinary friendships, the sole difference being that in this God friendship we are associated with a perfect and full personality; while in all other friendships we are associated with incomplete and partial persons like our selves. This makes a difference in the intensity and mean ing of our friendship, but no difference as to kind. Further, there is a need to quiet the minds of some who seem to think psychology is putting God out of the work ings of the human soul. A few year ago, when evolution was in the enthusiastic flush of a new discovery, many of its advocates and still more of the Christian people thought it was destined to explain away God's working in the universe of physical nature. But we have long Since ceased to feel that evolution is Opposed to religion. It claims to be only a theory of the method of creation; and if it can and does reveal to us the method by which God works, we may well rejoice in this new light, which is essentially religious.
