The past discussions of women’s roles have left their male counterparts in an undefined, blank space. Modern popular culture, such as the movie industry, uses the elusiveness of modern gender conceptions to question the antique hierarchy of the white male protagonist as the hero and savior of the world. Walter Hollstein (Was vom Manne uebrig blieb - Krise und Zukunft des straken Geschlechts) and R.W. Connell (Men and the Boys) investigate in their works the shift within masculine identity. In their research they make an attempt to answer the questions whether men need to be heroes, what roles their bodies play and how childhood (in regards to the parent-child relationship) effects the individual conception of masculinity. Chris Holmlund explores The Masculinity as Multiple Masquearde as the reinforcement of hegemonic power relations. And in Hard Bodies – Hollywood Masculinity in the Reagan Era Susan Jefferson provides a detailed observation of the beginnings of openly emphasized masculine body images in the 1980s. The result, is the strive of movie directors to create protagonists who are the representation of such a lost, white, heroic individual. Does this description of a lost, masked, lonesome hero sound familiar? Indeed, Director Christopher Nolan shapes this character in his Dark Knight trilogy. But how did he manage to change a cultural icon from the 20th century, a man in purple tights, into the dark cynical postmodern anti-hero? My Bachelor thesis is: Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy cinematicly denounces Batman as the agent for the masculine crisis in modern Hollywood. In order to proof this thesis, my paper scientifically analyzes the effects used in the trilogy to highlight the change of masculine gender conception and where it fails to accomplish this goal. First of all, the paper starts with the cinematography, Nolan uses to reinforce the theme of an orphaned, masked, vigilante superhero questioning the hierarchy of society. Low key lighting reinforces the dark, cynical mood transmitted in the movie. The various ways of framing the shots that underline a hero who physically flies above the roofs of Gotham and metaphorically above the law. Speed and length of shots draw a clear distinction between Bruce Wayne and his alter ego Batman. Further more, the director's use of the mis-en-scene...

Paul Varjak, a young writer, falls in love with her and tries to convince her to settle down with him. The movie has become a crucial cultural reference. But before the film, there was a source text: a novella by the same title, written by Truman Capote and published in 1958. The film adaption was made only three years later, by director Blake Edwards, scriptwriter George Axelrod and the producers Martin Jurow and Richard Shepherd. Those who have read Capote’s novella and have seen the film usually complain about huge difference between the two – and they undoubtedly have a point. However, adaptation studies have far too long concentrated on the issue of fidelity alone, implying that a story could just be projected on the screen without having to undergo change. But film and literature are two very different mediums and thus, in the process of an adaptation, transformation must occur. There is no need for proving that book and film are different – this has been discussed many times before and can be read in a great number of critical reviews. But there is much more to adaptation studies than a simple fidelity analysis. What I intend to do is to find out why book and film differ crucially in many points in order to prove that in spite of sharing (at least in big part) the same characters, the same setting, important parts of the story, key motifs and even often the same dialogues, the novella Breakfast at Tiffany’s and the film based on it actually tell very different stories with very different, even contradictory underlying messages and thus with a very different reception and impact.

Eventually, the Wachowski brothers picked up this idea in order to produce the Matrix trilogy, a cyberpunk story which may have led to more controversial discussions than any other movie in recent cinema history. The story is set in the near future and starts out with Neo, a computer hacker, being contacted by some underground rebels. Their leader Morpheus considers him to be some promised Christ-like savior, the "chosen one" to free the human race and reestablish peace between the machines and mankind. He introduces Neo to what he knows about reality. [...] But Neo did have a choice whether he really wanted to know the truth about the world he was living in. Morpheus offered him two options, namely a blue and a red pill: "You take the blue pill and the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe," he explained to Neo. In allusion to Alice in Wonderland, he would otherwise "show [him] how deep the rabbit hole goes." Although Morpheus insists he cannot offer "anything but the truth," Neo's decision in favour of the red pill is clear rather soon. This scene right at the beginning of the trilogy is also when everybody in front of the screens starts to wonder what he or she would have opted for. Even in the further course of the movie, when it is known that people just are slaves to the machines and living in a simulation, this question remains, to some extent. What advantages does it have to stick to the system and, on the other hand, what is wrong with living in such a simulated reality as presented in the Matri

To make the two genres comparable in such a limited scope I will focus on two movies, each of which can be regarded as prototypical for its genre. Considering the 'Blaxploitation' genre I will focus on the movie Shaft (1971) by Gordon Parks. The Hood movie I chose is John Singleton's Boyz N The Hood (1991), which will be called Boyz in the rest of this term paper. Anybody who has seen movies featuring black male protagonists in major roles - like Bad Boys or Django Unchained - might have noticed that often those black male characters are depicted in certain and often clichéd ways. This depiction can be described by another term which is 'construction'. What those films actually do is a construction of a black masculinity through means of acting, filming techniques or even the choice of the actor, especially with regard to his outward appearance. The black male character has been a very central figure in American literature and movies for a long time. Considering movies it can be argued that for roughly one century there have been constructions of African-American males in American cinema starting with the highly racist film The Birth of a Nation. Nowadays virtually everybody will know movies that feature black masculine main protagonists. Two periods which can be considered as highly influential with regard to the construction of black masculinity are the early seventies and the early nineties because they originated two important genres. These two genres will be referred to as 'Blaxploitation' and 'hood movie' throughout this text.
