And a marvelous market it is indeed, with all the hustle and bustle of an old-fashioned corner store, the cozy warmth and goodwill of a store-keeping grandma, and the hilarious pandemonium of a cat and mouse chase. Book excerpt: Stories about mermaids come from almost every country by the sea-from Iceland to India; America to Arabia. Most mermaids have flowing golden hair, long graceful tails, and a beauty that lures men to the bottom of the sea. Sven, in the Danish story, "Sven and Lilli," followed Lilli to her ocean home, where "they live happily. And there, in their domed house under the sea, so people say, they are living still." But not all mermaids are beautiful, and some are unchancy creatures indeed. There is a mermaid in the Irish tale, "The Magic Lake," who has "pig's eyes and wolf's teeth, and a mouth...grinning from ear to ear." And the beautiful mermaid Groach, in the Breton story, "The Groach of the Isle of Lok," casts a spell over handsome young men, marries them, and then turns them into rainbow-colored fish. In these sixteen stories Ruth Manning-Sanders captures the quicksilver personalities of mermaids and mermen as she tells of their marvelous schemes and adventures.

Book The Marvelous Saga of the MERCANARY

Download or read book The Marvelous Saga of the MERCANARY written by David Reynolds and published by Problematic Press. This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harrison Stockton Bueller thinks he's hit bottom when he makes a new friend. Enter: the MERCANARY™. This is The Marvelous Saga of the MERCANARY™. It's also the tale of Harry's nightmarish misadventures. Problematic Press is proud to present to you this gonzo picaresque novel... or something. Is there ever any solace? This is it. This is lit! ----- Somewhere between Holden Caulfield, Ignatius J. Reilly, and BoJack Horseman, you'll find Harrison Stockton Bueller playing with his G.I. Joes. MERCANARY™, a sells-word inspired by a typo, is a metafictional hero who's been drafted for lit's sake on land, sea, and air. His mission? Word. ----- In the words of the author: "This is a gonzo picaresque novel. It's a work of intermedial metafiction. It's a cautionary tale. It's a sob story. It's a farcical melodrama. It is high art. It adapts a 'zine of poetry and adventure. It adapts a memeoem, which is literally a new poetic art form that I invented for this. It is the culmination of my life's work in literature. It's ballsy and hubristic and vulnerable all at once. The protagonist is an anti-hero. The sidekick is really something else. The odds are against them, but they're in this to win it. Together, they make things weird. Well, this thing is certainly weird." ----- David Reynolds hasn't won any awards for his creative writing, but his most shocking anecdote has won him more beer than he could possibly ever drink. He lives in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, where he teaches English at Atlantic Canada's largest university.

Book The Pleasures of Metamorphosis

Download or read book The Pleasures of Metamorphosis written by Lucy Fraser and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2017-06-05 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lucy Fraser’s The Pleasures of Metamorphosis: Japanese and English Fairy Tale Transformations of "The Little Mermaid" explores Japanese and English transformations of Hans Christian Andersen’s 1837 Danish fairy tale "The Little Mermaid" by focusing on pleasure as a means to analyze the huge variety of texts that transform a canonical fairy tale such as Andersen’s. Fraser examines over twenty Japanese and English transformations, including literary texts, illustrated books, films, and television series. This monograph also draws upon criticism in both Japanese and English, meeting a need in Western fairy-tale studies for more culturally diverse perspectives. Fraser provides a model for critical cross-cultural fairy tale analysis in her examination of the journey of a single fairy tale across two languages. The book begins with the various approaches to reading and writing fairy tales, with a history of "The Little Mermaid" in Japanese and English culture. Disney’s The Little Mermaid and Studio Ghibli’s Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea are discussed as examples that simulate pleasurable physical experiences through animation’s tools of music and voice, and visual effects of movement and metamorphosis. Fraser then explores the literary effects of the fairy tale by male authors, such as Oscar Wilde, Tanizaki Jun’ichiro, and Abe Kobo, who invoke familiar fairy-tale conventions and delineate some of the pleasures of what can be painful enchantment with a mermaid or with the fairy tale itself. The author examines the portrayals of the mermaid in three short stories by Matsumoto Yuko, Kurahashi Yumiko, and Ogawa Yoko, engaging with familiar fairy tales, reference to fairy-tale research, and reflections on the immersive experience of reading. Women characters and authors are also hyperaware of the possible meanings of Andersen’s "The Little Mermaid" and of the fairy tale itself, furthering the discussion with Nonaka Hiiragi’s novel Ningyo-hime no kutsu, and D[di?]’s novel Sento no ningyo-hime to majo no mori, as well as an episode of the science fiction television series Dark Angel. Fraser concludes that the "pleasure" framework is useful for a cross-cultural study of creative engagements with and transformations of a particular fairy tale. Few studies have examined Japanese fairy-tale transformations to the extent that Fraser has, presenting fascinating information that will intrigue fairy-tale scholars and those wanting to learn more about the representation of pleasure behind the imaginative and fantastical.
