Book The Martyrs of Polynesia

Download or read book The Martyrs of Polynesia written by A. W. Murray and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Martyrs of Polynesia: Memorials of Missionaries, Native Evangelists, and Native Converts, Who Have Died by the Hand of Violence, From 1799 to 1871 Not much need be said by way of preface to the following pages. The origin and nature of the work are explained in the introduction. Most of the papers have already been given to the Australian public through the medium of periodicals, and they are now collected and offered in their present form to a wider circle in the hope that their usefulness will thereby be extended, and the end of their preparation and publication be further promoted. May the Head of the Church smile on these records, and make them instrumental in awakening a deeper and wider interest in the great cause with which the martyrs of Polynesia were identified in life and in death, and to Him let all the praise redound, world without end. Book Literary Culture and the Pacific

Download or read book Literary Culture and the Pacific written by Vanessa Smith and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-01-08 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1998 book examines a range of nineteenth-century European accounts from the Pacific, depicting Polynesian responses to imported metropolitan culture, in particular its technologies of writing and print. Texts designed to present self-affirming images of 'native' wonderment at European culture in fact betray the emergence of more complex modes of appropriation and interrogation by the Pacific peoples. Vanessa Smith argues that the Pacific islanders called into question the material basis and symbolic capacities of writing, even as they were first being framed in written representations. Examining accounts by beachcombers and missionaries, she suggests that complex modes of self-authorization informed the transmission of new cultural practices to the Pacific peoples. This shift of attention towards reception and appropriation provides the context for a detailed discussion of Robert Louis Stevenson's late Pacific writings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ruth narrative opens with a climate crisis – a famine pushed a family to migrate – and addresses some of the critical concerns for refugees: food, security, home, land, inheritance. Around those concerns, Losing Ground: Reading Ruth in the Pacific offers a collection of bible studies from the Pacific that interweave the climate pandemic with the interests and wisdoms of Pasifika natives. Weaving Ruth’s story together with the stories of those who, as Pacific islanders on the frontline of a climate catastrophe, are forced to leave their homes because of rising sea levels, Pasifika bible scholar Jione Havea offers a powerful and potent contribution which refuses to pretend scripture can be read separately from the every day realities of a climate emergency.
