Book Autonomous Weapon Systems and the Law of Armed Conflict

Download or read book Autonomous Weapon Systems and the Law of Armed Conflict written by Tim McFarland and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-09 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For policymakers, this book explains the ramifications under international humanitarian law of a major new field of weapon development with a focus on questions currently being debated by governments, the United Nations and other bodies. Based on a clear explanation of the principles of autonomous systems and a survey of technologies under active development as well as some that are in use today, it provides a thorough legal analysis grounded on a clear understanding of the technological realities of autonomous weapon systems. For legal practitioners and scholars, it describes the legal constraints that will apply to use of autonomous systems in armed conflict and the measures that will be needed to ensure that the efficacy of the law is maintained. More generally, it serves as a case study in identifying the legal consequences of use of autonomous systems in partnership with, or in place of, human beings.

Download or read book Transport Justice written by Karel Martens and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transport Justice develops a new paradigm for transportation planning based on principles of justice. Author Karel Martens starts from the observation that for the last fifty years the focus of transportation planning and policy has been on the performance of the transport system and ways to improve it, without much attention being paid to the persons actually using – or failing to use – that transport system. There are far-reaching consequences of this approach, with some enjoying the fruits of the improvements in the transport system, while others have experienced a substantial deterioration in their situation. The growing body of academic evidence on the resulting disparities in mobility and accessibility, have been paralleled by increasingly vocal calls for policy changes to address the inequities that have developed over time. Drawing on philosophies of social justice, Transport Justice argues that governments have the fundamental duty of providing virtually every person with adequate transportation and thus of mitigating the social disparities that have been created over the past decades. Critical reading for transport planners and students of transportation planning, this book develops a new approach to transportation planning that takes people as its starting point, and justice as its end.

Book Group Recommender Systems

Download or read book Group Recommender Systems written by Alexander Felfernig and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents group recommender systems, which focus on the determination of recommendations for groups of users. The authors summarize different technologies and applications of group recommender systems. They include an in-depth discussion of state-of-the-art algorithms, an overview of industrial applications, an inclusion of the aspects of decision biases in groups, and corresponding de-biasing approaches. The book includes a discussion of basic group recommendation methods, aspects of human decision making in groups, and related applications. A discussion of open research issues is included to inspire new related research. The book serves as a reference for researchers and practitioners working on group recommendation related topics.

Book Perspectives of System Informatics

Download or read book Perspectives of System Informatics written by Dines Bjorner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-01-26 with total page 552 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume comprises the papers presented at the Third International Andrei Ershov Memorial Conference \Perspectives of System Informatics", Akadem- rodok (Novosibirsk, Russia), July 6{9, 1999. The main goal of the conference was to give an overview of research directions which are decisive for the growth of major areas of research activities in system informatics. The conference was the third one in the line. The r st and second inter- tionalconferences\PerspectivesofSystemInformatics"wereheldinNovosibirsk, Akademgorodok, in May, 1991, and June, 1996, respectively. Both conferences gathered a wide spectrum of specialists and were undoubtedly very successful. The third conferenceincluded many of the subjects of the second conference, such as theoretical computer science, programming methodology, new infor- tiontechnologies, andthepromising eldofarti cialintelligence|asimportant components of system informatics. The style of the second conference was p- served to a certain extent in that there were a considerable number of invited papers in addition to the contributed papers. However, posters were replaced by short talks mainly given by young researchers.
