  • ISBN : 1876819375
  • Pages : 292 pages

Book excerpt: With a sparkling lyricism, House of Given reflects on the gentle insistence of love. Despite the strains and impositions people place upon it, especially within the close confines of family - despite secrets, guilt, sorrow and silence - Collopy's novel illustrates a belief that love's essential nature beckons revelation. And sometimes revelations emerge through the very notion that 'Families have a way of scratching each other's sores.' Lineage and living collide, offering sacrifice, reconciliation and truth as an answer to the question of identity within family. The characters of House of Given reveal a story of family as we all know it to one extent or another, and of life, the fragile kind in which we all, sooner or later, find ourselves. - IP Picks 2006 Judges' Report

Where was I? Oh yeah the book. We're in small town Meltoon, population one smartphone per thousand. A simpler time, with complicated people acting like simpletons, to be stupefied by their governing harlots and shiftless cunners known in the profession as sitting members, representatives of a local council. A cunner is a type of fish and I was trying to sound smart making 'cunning' into a person - a cunner. Know what? Don't care. Keeping it fish. Frank Fullings is the mayor and he's having one hell of a season grappling commitments. Then his brother shows up in a nearby town after many years absence and we all know what that means: instant hatred. Family, after all.

Book Home Sweat Home

    Book Details:
  • Author : Elizabeth Patton
  • Publisher : Rowman & Littlefield
  • Release : 2014-01-23
  • ISBN : 1442229705
  • Pages : 286 pages

Download or read book Home Sweat Home written by Elizabeth Patton and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2014-01-23 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coeditors Elizabeth Patton and Mimi Choi argue that an in-depth examination of media images of housework from the mid-nineteenth century to the early twenty-first century is long overdue. Modern depictions often imply that certain concerns can be resolved through excessive domesticity, reflecting some of the complicated and unfinished issues of second-wave feminism. Home Sweat Home: Perspectives on Housework and Modern Relationships reveals how widespread the cultural image of “perfect” housewives and the invisibility of household labor were in the past and remain today. In this collection of essays, contributors explore the construction of women as homemakers and the erasure of household labor from the middle-class home in popular representations of housework. They concentrate on such matters as the impact of second-wave feminism on families and gender relations; of popular culture—especially in film, television, magazines, and advertising—on our views of what constitutes home life and gender relations; and of changing views of sexuality and masculinity within the domestic sphere. Home Sweat Home will interest students and scholars of gender, cultural, media, and communication studies; sociology; and American history and appeal to anyone curious about housework, gender relations and popular culture.

Book excerpt: A group of diverse women—brought together by their connection with the same dishonest man—bond under the most unlikely of circumstances and find romance along the way in this action-packed celebration of friendship and love from New York Times bestselling author Fern Michaels. When Samantha Rainford—new wife to Douglas Cosmo Rainford III—returns home from her honeymoon to find divorce papers waiting, she’s shocked and heartbroken. Then she discovers that she’s not the first to be abandoned—she’s one of four (or maybe more) ex-Mrs. Rainfords—and decides it’s time to put into practice that old truism: Don’t get mad, get even. With her knowledge from FBI training—which she may have flunked out of, but she remembers a thing or two—Sam gathers the other ex-Mrs. Rainfords to help her enact her revenge. Together, the motley crew attends a top-secret private special-ops training camp in the North Carolina mountains, where Sam meets fiercely disciplined ex-CIA operative Kollar Havapopulas. Tall and as handsome as a Greek god, “Pappy” is the best at what he does—transforming civilians into highly skilled fighting teams. What he’s less adept at, however, is telling a woman how he feels, and before long he discovers he’s developing some very intense feelings for Samantha Rainford—an attraction that seems fated to be a total disaster. Two personalities as strong as Sam and Pappy are sure to strike sparks, but will the fire that burns between them consume everything in its path?

Book The Evil Twins of American Television

Download or read book The Evil Twins of American Television written by Kristi Rowan Humphreys and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2019-08-22 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Evil Twins of American Television examines evil-twin depictions in over fifty years of television, comparing male twins to female twins and male-writer depictions to female-writer depictions. Kristi Rowan Humphreys evaluates The Patty Duke Show, Bewitched, Gilligan’s Island, I Dream of Jeannie, and The Brady Bunch, among other television programs that use the twinning trope to explore themes of feminism and identity. Employing traits identified by Betty Friedan in The Feminine Mystique as belonging to the “evil” side of her “schizophrenic split” theory, Humphreys analyzes the ways in which these alter ego characters embody the desire for a separate self and independence through loose inhibitions, career interests, political interests, intellectual prowess, and assertiveness. This book then compares female-written twin episodes to male-written twin episodes, finding that when “evil twin” episodes are written by women writers, the twins are presented less as oppositional binaries and more as compatible, often symbiotic binaries. Thus, the women writers of these shows offer a compelling response to Friedan’s text, one that acknowledges and underscores the many complexities of women—the image of which cannot in reality be so easily split into two oppositional binaries. Humphreys then connects 1960s depictions to more current evil-twin examples, including those in Friends, Knight Rider, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch.

Maggie Halloran’s life is finally perfect. For recently retired Maggie Halloran, life in her renovated two-bedroom St. Ives fisherman’s cottage is picture perfect. With her daughter in London and her mother in Penzance, Maggie is free to enjoy the odd sleepover with her boyfriend, Nigel, visit galleries, or do her beloved sudoku. When Maggie’s reserved mother falls giddily in love, Maggie takes it in stride. At the wedding, Maggie’s daughter, Alice, announces she’s pregnant and needs somewhere to live. Oh, and she has a new puppy, too… Alice and Maggie have never been close, and Nigel’s allergic to dogs, but blood is thicker than your average Saturday night sleepover. Suddenly Maggie’s humouring her demanding daughter, fielding visits from her nostalgic ex-husband, and accommodating Alice’s baby daddy. And then Maggie’s mother arrives on the doorstep in tears, suitcase in hand, because she’s left her new husband. The only one keeping Maggie sane is Mitch, the builder converting the loft into another bedroom. Maggie’s three-level terrace is now home to three generations—soon to be four—and her perfectly quiet, drama-free life is gone. The question is…does she want it back?
