En la concepción aristocrática del marqués de Santillana, expuesta en el Prohemio a proverbios, la poesía no debe ser un mero pasatiempo, sino algo «útil», de contenidos profundos y trascendentes. Distingue entre poesía sublime, mediocre e ínfima; la primera sólo se expresa en griego y latín. Edición en castellano antiguo.
