Book The Marine the Man My Dad

Download or read book The Marine the Man My Dad written by Teresa Moore and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-04-22 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charlie, a country boy from Kansas volunteered to serve his country in a time of national emergency. Only one day after his nineteenth birthday, he enlisted into the USMC (United States Marine Corps) on December 8, 1942. He became a corporal, assigned to the Fourteenth Regiment (direct support artillery), Second Battalion, Fourth Division F. Battery, Fox Company. He and his Fourteenth Regiment fought in the famous Fourth Marine Division—a newly created amphibious landing assault fighting force during WWII in the Central Pacific Theater. They fought in the South Pacific against the Imperial Japanese Military. The Fourth Division was made up of the marine’s Twenty-Third, Twenty-Fourth, and Twenty-Fifth Regiments, along with the Fourteenth Regiment (artillery support). In Charlie’s marine records, it shows the following: muster date (April 1943), Battery F. Second Battalion, Fourteenth Marine, Twenty-Fourth Marine (reinforced) Camp Pendleton. The First, Second, and Third Battalions were the direct support battalions of the Twenty-Fourth Regiment. In combat, Charlie’s Fourteenth Regiment, F. Battery was assigned to a single, specific rifle regiment. Keep the Twenty-Fourth Regiment in mind as you read on. Charlie’s Fourteenth Regiment, Second Battalion would be the Twenty-Fourth Marine’s direct artillery support. The Fourth Division was known as the Magnificent Bastards, second to none. They became the fighting fourth. Their home base during the war was on the Island of Maui, Hawaii. This home base for the Fourth Division became known as Camp Maui. These brave marines became known and loved by the locals. They were soon called the Maui Marines, home only to the marine’s Fourth Division. My dad fought in the Kwajalein Atolls on Roi-Namur, Saipan, Tinian, and Iwo Jima in the South Pacific. These marines fought successfully against the Japanese, but not without a devastating number of loss from the original Fourth Division. This man Charlie, along with Geraldine, adopted me when I was about nine months old. I am the youngest and proudest daughter of the most loving and caring couple I had the privilege to call Dad and Mom. I have the deepest appreciation and admiration for both these special people. My devotion to their memory goes beyond measure. As an orphan in a Kansas orphanage at one time, I assure you the person that said, “Blood is thicker than water,” wasn’t adopted. I say, “Water is just as thick as blood.” This kind of love with an open heart runs deep into the very core of one’s soul. These gathered stories were recalled to the best of my family’s and my memories. There are stories of interest that I think will captivate you while reading. I hope you enjoy this collection of stories during WWII and get a little sense of the marine and the incredible man who was my dad.

Book The Measure of a Man

Download or read book The Measure of a Man written by Kathleen Broome Williams and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2013-04-15 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maj. Roger G. B. Broome, USMCR, died from wounds received on Saipan before his daughter had a chance to know him. Now a well-known naval historian and author of award-winning books, that daughter, Kathleen Broome Williams, has turned the research skills she honed studying naval technology to find her lost father. For this biography, she makes full use of an extensive collection of her father’s colorful and articulate letters along with the testimony of surviving Leathernecks who served with Major Broome, backed up by official records. The book reconstructs her father’s life as a University of Virginia Law School graduate who obtained a commission in the Marine Corps despite his colorblindness and eventually won the combat command he lobbied for. In April 1944 Broome took command of the Regimental Weapons Company, 24th Marines, 4th Marine Division. But his pursuit of glory came to an abrupt end just twenty-four days into the Saipan invasion when he sustained the wounds that condemned him to a lingering death. The author not only found a hero who was awarded the Navy Cross for his courageous actions, but also uncovered a profoundly human individual with strengths as well as obvious faults. In unfolding Broome’s story, she takes significant world events from seventy years ago and places them in an intimate context, to show how they affected Americans on and off the battlefield. Her efforts provide an inside look at the U.S. Marine Corps during the pivotal years of World War II, including recruit training, amphibious assaults, high casualties, and, not least, the personal feuds and rivalries that shaped it.

Book Footprints of the Montford Point Marines

Download or read book Footprints of the Montford Point Marines written by Eugene S. Mosley and published by Dagmar Miura. This book was released on 2022-01-15 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Footprints of the Montford Point Marines explores historic information about the Montford Point Marines and also my dad, Corporal Thomas Mosley, while serving with the first group of African American Marines in the United States. This is the story of a brief period of his life, from Montford Point Camp to the Pacific in World War II, and seventy years later being awarded the Congressional Gold Medal by Congress. These men came from all parts of the United States to the South to train at a segregated facility called Montford Point Camp, adjacent to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, the largest all-purpose Marine base in the world. It had the best equipment for all types of military training, but these new black enlistees at the adjacent Montford Point Camp were not allowed to enter unless accompanied by a White officer—Camp Lejeune was exclusive to White Marines and their families only. With World War II looming, the government needed all hands on deck and created millions of new jobs in preparation but continued keeping Blacks out of the job market and housing. With the pressure imposed by groups such as the NAACP, President Franklin D. Roosevelt had to rethink these exclusions, at least in the federal workplace, and through negotiations with many groups, led by A. Philip Randolph, Executive Order 8802 was issued by President Roosevelt on June 25, 1941, to counter racial discrimination. The U.S. Marine Corps was part of the defense industry, and as a result had to open their ranks to African Americans who wished to serve. The Montford Point Marines became giants in the Asiatic Pacific and were some of the greatest heroes this country has ever known. Through swamps, hills, and worse terrain, under heavy enemy gunfire, they were able to supply ammunition, fuel, food, and medical supplies to troops on the front lines where most others had failed. They were also charged with removing the dead and wounded back to the safety of the ships waiting offshore. Eventually they were called to the front lines and fought in every major battle in the Pacific islands. Some seventy years later, on June 27, 2012, approximately four hundred of these brave men, mostly in their eighties and nineties, finally received their just recognition by receiving Congressional Gold Medals. Other families received the medal posthumously. From 1942 to 1949, the 19,168 Montford Point Marines paid the price so others could follow in their footprints to continue the legacy of the few, the proud, the Marines: Semper Fidelis (Always Faithful). They were also known as “The Chosen Few.”

Book excerpt: The history and lore of the United States Marine Corps are likely unmatched. Steeped in the rich history and tradition of the Corps since its founding in 1775, this book focuses on more recent history, specifically the author’s experiences as a young Marine in the 1960s, including his tour of duty in Vietnam. It also includes biographical profiles of more than 100 other Marines who fought in Vietnam or other conflicts. Most of those profiled are Marines with whom the author served or has come to know since his active military service. The 30th Marine Commandant, General Carl Mundy, has written: “Few who have borne the title [United States Marine] fail to identify with it throughout their entire lives.” Marines are, as Shakespeare has written, “We few, we happy few, we band of brothers.” And brothers are members of a family. This family is “The few. The proud. The Marines.”

Book Miracle Survivors

Download or read book Miracle Survivors written by Tami Boehmer and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-11-11 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you have received an incurable cancer diagnosis, hearing about someone “who made it” is like spotting a rescue ship when you’re drowning in a stormy sea. Miracle Survivors provides that lifeline with a collection of stories of cancer survivors who were given a terminal diagnosis but shocked everyone by thriving years past their prognoses. These “miracle survivors” have different cancers and circumstances, but share a poor prognosis and incredible drive to overcome it. After being diagnosed with stage IV breast cancer, award-winning author and blogger Tami Boehmer decided she and others like her desperately needed hope to override the dismal statistics and death sentences provided by many doctors. So she began interviewing incredible men and women from around the country who defied the odds and lived to tell about it. Miracle Survivors will help answer the question: What sets people apart who beat the odds of a terminal or incurable prognosis? Overcoming the odds wasn’t something that just happened to those who share their stories. Each person took a very active role in overcoming their challenges, whether it was activating their faith or transforming their lifestyle. Rather than passively accepting their circumstances, they decided to transform them. The book is essential reading for anyone with cancer, their loved ones, and everyone else who wants inspiration to conquer their life challenges.

Download or read book Senior Anonymous written by Matthew Hallman and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2019-10-16 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Senior Anonymous is about the one year that Matt was a senior. It goes through the chronological series of adventures and misadventures that Matt and his friends managed to do for that year. It recalls so many of the classmates, teachers, coaches, and strangers who added to that year that is supposed to be such a vital springboard into life. The story leans heavily upon the drinking and smoking that became a partner in all the activity, whether it was school or after-school events. And clearly the events are intended, as they were then, to bring some laughter. There is an undertone, though, of the early days and signs of someone who is becoming an addict and alcoholic. There is an update summary of the lives and situations as they are today that sometimes reflects sarcasm, but a sense of happiness and spiritual contentedness as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there are plenty of books by men, for men, on the topic of “Christian masculinity,” these books generally fail to address men’s propensities for violence and the traditional inequity between men and women, often endorsing inequity and sanctioning aggressive behavior as an appropriate “manly” response to conflict. Peaceful at Heart cuts through this conversation by offering a uniquely Anabaptist Christian perspective on masculinity. The vision of masculinity presented in this book is more peaceful, just, caring, life-giving for men, and more sensitive to women and children than both traditional images of masculinity and the hypermasculine images promoted by contemporary popular culture and wider evangelical Christianity. Peaceful at Heart addresses men and masculinity using Anabaptist theological themes of discipleship, community, and peace. As a collaborative project by men, for men, this book demonstrates through personal narratives, theological reflection, and practical guidance the importance of collective discernment, accountability, and mutual encouragement regarding how to live as a peaceful man in a violent world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First of all, this is not a self-help book. This a journey to discovering the true beauty that each of us has resonating on the inside. Getting married, having children, pursuing a career, and not knowing our true identity is a train wreck waiting to happen. I have lived on a continuous merry-go-round. The merry-go-round starts out slow paced; then, it increases speed, and finally, one day you realize that you cannot control the speed (not that you were ever in control anyway). As a woman, we go through life carrying pain from place to place, never really getting the healing that we need. Yes, there is some surface healing, but it crumbles when we find ourselves back in a position of vulnerability. We go through life taking pictures based on our pain, our experiences. These pictures that we take, we place them in frames and hang on our walls. Some of these pictures we allow others to see and some of them we keep hidden in the background. We look up one day and realize that all the pictures that we have taken have created the person that we are currently. Not all our pictures are painful; there are some great pictures that each of us has taken. My prayer is that the good pictures, the pictures that make us smile and give us warm, cozy feelings, outnumber the pictures that cause us to hold our heads down in shame, guilt, and regret. Let us lift our heads. We are more than our past and our experiences! God has great plans for us, and He will finish what He has started!

Book Always Faithful

  • Pages : 309 pages

Download or read book Always Faithful written by Carl P. Marchi and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2007 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Always Faithful part of the title has arisen from the Marine Corps motto Semper Fidelis. Always Faithful: A Marine's Tale gives a realistic view of the anguish a young person endures in becoming a United States Marine, as well as the trauma of war. The story also helps the reader understand a certain Italian faction, as well as the Italian-American culture as it pertains to the Goomba perspective. It is not a story about the Marine Corps, nor a story about the Mob. It is simply about an eighteen year old young man of Italian descent from Trenton, New Jersey whose life is touched by both. For this teen, there is more to life than the customary demands placed on people his age. These demands put him on a rollercoaster ride destined to resolve uncertainty. Peer pressure sets the main character, Joseph Mommalione on a journey, which tests, his honor in the Marines, loyalty to strong Italian family traditions, and ability to bear confinement. Joe Momma's year long venture before, during, and after the 1991 Gulf War shows the way to heroism, imprisonment, vengeance, and love. He goes from the typical teen back on the block to the traumatic experience of Marine boot camp, to the theatre of war where his few days of combat lead to heroism and everlasting friendship with two Marines. After the war, he and his comrades are recuperating from their wounds back in New Jersey while Joe Momma is being groomed into his uncle's crime family. Circumstances land Joe Momma in the county jail where he is threatened by the FBI to reveal information about his mob connections. Rather than face three to five years in the Trenton State Penitentiary, he plans and successfully completes a daring escape from jail with the help of the two former Marines and his mentor Carmine Scalia, who is also a former Marine. Before he blends into the criminal underworld, he seeks revenge on the cop who put him behind bars. In doing so, he discovers a plot by a Tucci Crime Family crew boss to destroy him. Although the story portrays an adolescent from Trenton, New Jersey, it is targeted toward a mature audience and will touch the hearts of men and women alike. While the book is Marine hardcore, as well as street savvy, it is sensitive to family values and portrays heroic deeds. The book is easy reading, full of wit, sorrow, happiness, conflict, compassion, romance, crime, and adventure including a twist which will capture one's interest from beginning to end.
