The Marine Corps was born in Philadelphia in 177 5 and Operates everywhere. End of historical sketch. We are justly proud of our record, and sing with pride that part of our Marine Hymn - From the Halls of Montezuma to the Shores of Tripoli, We Fight Our Country's Battles on the Land as on the Sea. But who took us to the land where we fought? Who took us across the sea? Upon whom did the government place the initial responsibility for the enforcement of its determined policy? The navy. The Navy has been our father and mother, tutored us during our childhood days, afforded Opportunities for us to learn by experience, watched and guard ed our growth to manhood, and demanded of our nation that we be allowed to grow strong and sufficient to perform the tasks which she has assigned to us. DO not weaken in that demand. We say, that by Congressional action, we are the oldest branch of the services. That's our story, and we'll stick to it. But we are proud of that tutelage, of that association, of the fact that the Navy has given us a job that measures up to the responsibility of any other element of the fleet. Waller for duty at Guantanamo, Cuba, it included the Second Regiment. It consisted of 31 officers and 685 enlisted. Today the regiment has 60 officers with 1800 enlisted. There were no permanent regiments in the Marine Corps until 1911 but the Sec ond was in the field and functioning more than a decade before that date. In January, 1914, the Second Marines participated with the Advance Base Brigade, the old name for Fleet Marine Force, in a series of successful maneuvers. It shipped on the uss Prairie for the isle of Culebra and helped repel the whole Atlantic Fleet in a problem which brought naval commenda tion. The Marines simply did their job with the customary thoroughness. Then they went to Pensacola, Florida to recoup. They didn't stay long, however; the Mex ican situation tightened. The following are the additions, viz. Canvas fatigue suits, leggings, mattresses, wire bunk bottoms, pillows, pillowcases, and sheets, and black helmets instead Of shakos. These changes will be of great benefit and comfort to the enlisted men of the corps, and will tend to decrease the number of desertions.
