Book excerpt: Private investigator Alex Rasmussen has loved carnivals since he was a boy, and what better way to enjoy one as a grown man than with a lovely woman at his side? As he and his date stroll along the midway, playing games of chance, the soft September night is torn by a scream. Rasmussen rushes to a nearby field to find a woman's body in the weeds. One of the carnival workers---a man with trouble in his past and a motive for murder---is arrested and charged with the crime. The lawyer hired to defend him retains Rasmussen to investigate. The police are convinced they have a clear-cut case, but as Alex probes, he finds a trail as bewildering as a funhouse mirror maze. An outsider to the close-knit "carnies," and shunned by the police department he once served, Rasmussen faces a client who refuses to talk, gangsters looking to exploit the carnival's troubles, a mob of citizens bent on rough justice, and an elusive killer who seems to anticipate Alex's every move. When the investigation points to crooked cops, the defending lawyer abandons the case. Wisdom says Rasmussen should do likewise, but staying on has become a matter of honor. As a woman tells him, "We all end up in the graveyard, flying the marble kite." The only question now is: When? In the old city of Lowell (once the textile capital of America, now a husk of run-down mills), the streets have never been meaner. Beyond the flickering lights and the bright surfaces lies a shadow world where betrayal, deception, and violent death await.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'A Handful of Marbles' is a collection of twelve stories that takes readers down the nostalgia lane to what childhood used to be, much before the whole world and its kids went digital. The stories revolve around Pushkar, a nine-year-old precocious boy with a mind of his own. The readers get a ringside view of his life sprinkled with happiness, tears, conflicts, collaborations, love, bonhomie, fears, fantasies, aspirations, arrogance, anger, and more. Be it fighting his guilt conscience after unfairly winning a marble match, his ambition to be a manjha ninja, his encounter with ghouls, his confrontation with the Sarkar gang, obsession with Bruce Lee, his dilemma choosing between Lord Krishna and Jesus, his comic book adventure, his unusual acting debut in a film or infatuation for Twinkle Miss, the stories tend to be endearing, humourous and sometimes, plain baffling. Whatever the outcome, they will leave the readers smiling, thinking, and rooting for Pushkar.

Book A GRANDFATHER S GIFT

Download or read book A GRANDFATHER S GIFT written by James E. Smith, Sr. and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-02 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about my life experiences and also contains the stories I have heard my folks tell while sitting on the front porch after supper. For many years, my maternal grandfather lived with us. He and my dad would swap interesting stories about times when they were growing up and farming with oxen and mules. They talked about the "dummy line" railroads that ran through the forest near our home and told their childhood tales and many other stories I would long for later in life. I wanted to pass this and my life stories down to my descendants. Many interesting stories were told in the serene setting of the front porch deep in the country, with only the interruptions of whippoorwills, hoot owls, screech owls, and such making pleasant noises in the distant woods. ... I hope that this book will inspire future generations in some way to understand the important things in life. It's been said that the best things are free, and I learned that one only has to make necessary efforts to obtain a peaceful, happy, and fulfilling life.

Book Stepping Stones

Download or read book Stepping Stones written by Felicity Simmons and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2022-01-24 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only in retrospect did Felicity realize that walking along mud banks that separated paddy fields in rural India and sitting at the local well for hours on end observing the villagers - who were also observing her - was somewhat incongruous for a European child with light coloured eyes. Likewise, being placed in an orphanage at the age of one when her mother died. Felicity had an unusual way out from her deprivation at the age of twelve when she joined the Deccan Queen railway journey at an elite girls' boarding school run by nuns from Oxford, England graduating with a Cambridge High School Certificate at the age of eighteen. This story traces the stepping stones from the foundling home in Bombay to Felicity stepping off a P&O ship in Sydney, Australia. The timeframe of the story is in the 1930's. 1940's and 1950's, a time of great change as India transitioned from a British colony to an independent nation.
