Book A History of Missouri Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Missouri Classic Reprint written by Eugene Morrow Violette and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Missouri Missouri has had a h1story of unusual interest. But unfortunately Missourians do not know the history of their own State as they should. This is due largely to the fact that not enough books of a more or less popular nature have been written on this subject. At present the only books available that cover the whole field of Mis souri history are designed for use as texts in the ele mentary schools of the State, such as those by Rader, Williams, and Viles. The more standard works, such as those by Carr and Switzler, are either out of date or out of print. There are a number of special works dealing with different periods or subjects in Missouri history, but they are more or less expensive and hence will never have a very' wide circulation. Under these circumstances a new manual of Missouri history seems to be greatly needed, and it is in response to such a need that this book has been written and offered to the reading public. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Devonian of Missouri The data for the report contained in this bulletin were collected by the writer and his assistants during six field seasons. During June, July, and August of 1914, J. P. Connolly and Chester Longwell assisted in mapping and collecting; Mr. Connolly mapped during June of 1915; in June and July of 1917, several advanced students assisted in mapping and collecting; G. P. Moore and E. 0. Markham were field assistants the summer of 1918; V. W. Vandiver collected during July and August of 1919; G. P. Moore and V. W. Vandiver mapped the Devonian of Ralls County in 1919; and Roy H. Hall mapped part of Moniteau County in 1921. Mr. D. K. Greger knew the Devonian of Callaway County very thoroughly before the field work for the report was begun and helped out the investigation from his information. He collected from the Devonian of Montgomery County during June and part of July, 1914. The topographic maps of the United States Geological Survey for the region studied are Old, half-inch scale, and fifty foot contour interval, and are entirely unsatisfactory for accurate mapping. The base finally used for most of the work was a large scale county map with contour lines supplied from the United States Geological Survey contour maps. The contours were corrected to make them fit conditions as found in the field. A two-inch scale was used for all mapping in. Boone, Callaway, Montgomery, Warren and Moniteau Counties, and the U. S. Geological Survey topographic maps were the base for the other areas. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Geography of the Ozark Highland of Missouri Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Geography of the Ozark Highland of Missouri Classic Reprint written by Carl O. Sauer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Geography of the Ozark Highland of Missouri This volume is a study in regional geography, the most urgent field of geographic inquiry. Geography is among the youngest of the sciences. It is not ready, therefore, to announce many generalizations, but must concentrate on the systematic and comprehensive scrutiny of individual areas, inquiring into the conditions of the past as well as into those now existing. The collection of facts in this manner, and in this manner only, will lead to the establishment of the principles of geography. Such a study implies the attitude of the judge of conditions rather than of the advocate of theories. It is concerned with the impartial analysis of the conditions of life in a region, not with the enunciation of a theory for which evidence is to be adduced. It does not attempt to make out a case for the potency of any particular element of the environment, but contents 'itself with asking, What are the advantages and handicaps that are inherent in the region in question? The purposes of such a study are to furnish an adequate explanation of the conditions of life in a given area and to contribute proved statements which will aid in working out fundamental principles. Book Stories of Missouri Classic Reprint

Download or read book Stories of Missouri Classic Reprint written by John R. Musick and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-27 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stories of Missouri The early inhabitants of Missouri were a peculiar people. First of all were the Indians. When they settled there, no one knows. Next came the French, then the Spaniards, and lastly the Americans. The last named were mostly from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia. Nearly all the American settlers in Missouri were the descendants of pioneers who had grown accustomed to the trying scenes of forest life. They were a rigidly honest people. No locks were on their doors, and they had no need of any. As they were dependent on each other for protection, what belonged to one was freely loaned to his neighbor. If a pioneer wanted to borrow his neighbor's ax, and did not find the man at home, he took the ax without asking, and returned it when done with it. The early Missourians were rude and uncultured, but unselfish and brave. Stories of them, and of the people who preceded and followed them, are both entertaining and instructive. They serve to explain many curious names, customs, and laws, which to a person unfamiliar with the people must remain a mystery. Book Dodge s Geography of Missouri

Download or read book Dodge s Geography of Missouri written by J. M. Greenwood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dodge's Geography of Missouri: Part I, Missouri as a Whole; Part II, the Growth and Development of Cities In a text-book of geography we study the relation of one state or group of states to the whole country of which our home region is a part, and our commercial relations to the world as a whole. It follows that in such a treatment the characteristics that distinguish our own home regions must largely be lost to sight in the consideration of the great features that distinguish the country as a whole. In a special text-book devoted to one state or group of states we can learn more about our own region, its important surface features, its climate, the occupations of its people, its products, its local commerce, its history, its chief cities, and many other features of great interest to us. Hence we need to make a special study of our home locality after we have studied the larger region of which it is an important part. A local geography is not only valuable for study in school that we may know well the region about us, but it is valuable also as a reference volume to which we can refer for facts about our own state in our homes whenever in our reading or conversation some question arises concerning our own state which needs to be answered at once. In this text-book the surface features, the climate, the soil and other natural resources which determine the occupations of the people are studied first because they are the large features which determine the distribution and success of industries. One Of the great lessons the student learns in geography is Man's absolute dependence upon Nature for his existence. In Missouri, as in other regions, topography and climate pointed out the path of develop ment that communities must follow in order to make sure their existence within its borders. In the pages that follow, the student finds traced the fundamental Conditions that have moulded Missouri life. After these come the historical events that are landmarks in the growth of the state, and then the study of the industrial and commercial features is taken up. To these, which explain the reasons for the development and growth of the larger cities, and which show us why our own region is important to the country as a whole, careful attention has been given.
