Book The History and Antiquities of the Abbey Church of St Peter Westminster Vol 1 of 2

This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History and Antiquities of the Abbey Church of St. Peter, Westminster, Vol. 1 of 2: Including Notices and Biographical Memoirs of the Abbots and Deans of That Foundation The high respect which has accompanied the names of Pericles and Augustus in their descent to posterity, is due as much to the Protection given to the Arts by those Princes, as to their political and military renown. Succeeding ages regard, with grateful admiration, the Sovereigns who have fostered Genius, and under the sanction of whom those Works of unrivalled talent have been produced which transmit, and ennoble, the History of Countries now become the scenes of bondage and decay. Dynasties may cease, and a People themselves be destroyed, but the celebrity acquired by the patronage and cultivation of the Arts will exist till the latest period of Time. The Work which I have now the Honour of dedicating to your Majesty, is intended to illustrate the Abbey Church of Westminster: a structure alike venerable from its age, architecture, and sculpture; and from being the sacred Repository in which, together with the ashes of her Sovereigns, a grateful Nation has entombed the remains of those of her Sons who have been most distinguished for extending and confirming her Glories, her Religion, and her Laws. With the most lively sense of the gracious favour conferred by your Majesty, in granting to this Work the honour of your Illustrious Patronage, the Author unites in every wish that can tend to the Glory and Prosperity of Britain, and render her as great in Arts under the cherishing Influence of your Majesty, as she has already become Renowned in Arms. Book The Old Testament Manuscripts in the Freer Collection Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Old Testament Manuscripts in the Freer Collection Classic Reprint written by Henry A. Sanders and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old Testament Manuscripts in the Freer Collection In the publication of the manuscript of the Psalms the chief task has been to separate and read the badly decayed and black ened leaves. No pains have been spared in making the work as complete and accurate as possible, yet in all too many cases these decayed fragments of a manuscript have no evidence on most interesting passages. All decayed or lost lines and parts of lines have been filled out in the text publication from the Swete text, except where the amount of space in the manuscript proved the existence of a variant. The first fifteen Psalms are so fragmen tary, that it seemed best to give those lines only of which some part is preserved. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cambridge Sermons: Preached Before the University Of the following Sermons, those on Faith and Science formed a course intended to be preached before the University of Cambridge in the February of this year. Owing to illness, the third was not preached. The two on Prayer and Work were preached at Cambridge in the year 1870. I have taken the opportunity of this publication to add a sermon preached at Westminster Abbey in 1869. I was importuned at the time to publish this sermon, in order to vindicate myself against an accusation brought against it, that "it was of a nature to set class against class." Book The Fifteenth Century Book

Download or read book The Fifteenth Century Book written by Curt F. Bühler and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2016-11-11 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fifteenth century, one of the most curious and confused periods in recorded history, witnessed amazing developments in the printing industry and in the production of books. The present volume surveys the history of the manufacture of books throughout the fifteenth century, whether written by hand or produced by the press, and points out that both methods faced very similar problems and found almost identical solutions for them. Actually, the fifteenth century itself saw no material difference between manuscripts and incunabula (fifteenth-century printings), and regarded the latter simply as codices produced by "a new method of artificial writing." Curt F. Bühler discusses the impact of the epoch-making invention on the scribes as well as the attitudes that the contemporary book-lovers adopted toward the products of the press. The author also studies the types of men who were attracted to the new industry and the nature of the books that they believed to be readily vendible. In addition, certain familiar beliefs regarding the history of the early presses are challenged, and possible solutions are presented for the problems are still imperfectly understood. To illustrate the text, beautiful reproductions of illuminated manuscript pages, printed pages, colophons, woodcut illustration, and early typefaces have been included. The author's discussion of the decoration in books is not so much a study in the fine arts but, rather, an analysis of the types of volumes which lent themselves to decoration, and the various forms of such work.

Book excerpt: A seminal biography of the underappreciated eleventh-century Scandinavian warlord-turned-Anglo-Saxon monarch who united the English and Danish crowns to forge a North Sea empire Historian Timothy Bolton offers a fascinating reappraisal of one of the most misunderstood of the Anglo-Saxon kings: Cnut, the powerful Danish warlord who conquered England and created a North Sea empire in the eleventh century. This seminal biography draws from a wealth of written and archaeological sources to provide the most detailed accounting to date of the life and accomplishments of a remarkable figure in European history, a forward-thinking warrior-turned-statesman who created a new Anglo-Danish regime through designed internationalism.

Download or read book An Enquiry Into the Time of the First Foundation of Westminster Abbey to Which Is Added an Account of the Writers of the History of the Church by Richard Widmore written by Richard Widmore and published by Gale Ecco, Print Editions. This book was released on 2018-04-17 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 18th century was a wealth of knowledge, exploration and rapidly growing technology and expanding record-keeping made possible by advances in the printing press. In its determination to preserve the century of revolution, Gale initiated a revolution of its own: digitization of epic proportions to preserve these invaluable works in the largest archive of its kind. Now for the first time these high-quality digital copies of original 18th century manuscripts are available in print, making them highly accessible to libraries, undergraduate students, and independent scholars. The Age of Enlightenment profoundly enriched religious and philosophical understanding and continues to influence present-day thinking. Works collected here include masterpieces by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau, as well as religious sermons and moral debates on the issues of the day, such as the slave trade. The Age of Reason saw conflict between Protestantism and Catholicism transformed into one between faith and logic -- a debate that continues in the twenty-first century. ++++ The below data was compiled from various identification fields in the bibliographic record of this title.
