Book The Manuscripts of Piers Plowman

Download or read book The Manuscripts of Piers Plowman written by C. David Benson and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 1997 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The B-version of Piers Plowman, probably the only version authorised by Langland, is the one most frequently read today, and the most influential form of the poem. This catalogue of the 18 extant manuscripts, now located in Cambridge, London, Oxford, Tokyo, and San Marino, California, offers both individual manuscript descriptions and a record of the annotations. The new and detailed codicological descriptions include information on provenance and ownership; a full list of the contents; and a description of the physical make-up and the presentation of each manuscript. The substantial first full account of the various textual annotations in each manuscript (whether produced by the original scribes or later readers) provides the best record available of how Piers Plowman was understood by its earliest audience.

Book Piers Plowman and the Reinvention of Church Law

Download or read book Piers Plowman and the Reinvention of Church Law written by Arvind Thomas and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2019-03-07 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is a medieval truism that the poet meddles with words, the lawyer with the world. But are the poet's words and the lawyer's world really so far apart? To what extent does the art of making poems share in the craft of making laws, and vice versa? Framed by such questions, Piers Plowman and the Reinvention of Church Law in the Late Middle Ages examines the mutually productive interaction between literary and legal "makyngs" in England's great Middle English poem by William Langland. Focusing on Piers Plowman's preoccupation with wrongdoing in the B and C versions, Arvind Thomas examines the versions' representations of trials, confessions, restitutions, penalties, and pardons. Thomas explores how the "literary" informs and transforms the "legal" until they finally cannot be separated. Thomas shows how the poem's narrative voice, metaphor, syntax and style not only reflect but also act upon properties of canon law, such as penitential procedures and authoritative maxims. Langland's mobilization of juridical concepts, Thomas insists, not only engenders a poetics informed by canonist thought but also expresses an alternative vision of canon law from that proposed by medieval jurists and today's medievalists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition, the first of its kind in Piers Plowman studies, aims to establish the archetypal text of the B-version of the poem, the ancestor of all extant manuscripts. The editors claim that this can be determined with certainty in the majority of lines by examining the relationship between the best copies of the alpha and beta families of the B-version stemma. Past editors have attempted to reconstruct the authorial text by extensive emendation, but Burrow and Turville-Petre claim that the archetype was not nearly as corrupt as previously maintained. In Piers Plowman: The B-Version Archetype the editors have opened a new chapter in the study of the B-text tradition.

Book Piers Plowman Text

Download or read book Piers Plowman Text written by William Langland and published by Longman Publishing Group. This book was released on 1995 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first volume of a two-volume parallel-text edition of Piers Plowman. It contains complete critical texts of all four versions of the poem (the A, B and C texts and also the Z texts, the authenticity of which is still under debate). Each text is provided with a full critical apparatus based on first-hand study of the manuscript evidence in the light of modern scholarly understanding of the ways in which medieval vernacular texts were copied and transmitted. The text has been edited in a format based on that pioneered by W W Skeat in his famous parallel-text edition of 1886. This edition differs from that of Skeat in that the whole process of editing has been carried out on the basis of a systematic comparison of the variant readings of all versions, and also in that the detailed textual apparatus is included with the texts, enabling the reader to evaluate the strength of the manuscript support at every stage. Volume Two will contain the critical introduction, text notes, commentary, bibliography and the important glossary. Together they will provide a full and convenient basis for advanced study of this great medieval poem.
