Book Dr Frank W Schofield

Download or read book Dr Frank W Schofield written by Dougas C. Maplesden and published by Lomaland Books. This book was released on 2005 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My aim in writing this book was to present a concise description of the life and times of Dr. Frank Schofield, which would be of interest to his former students and professional colleagues as well as many others. Those of us who interacted with him had different reactions. Many feared him, others respected his intelligence and some just didn't care much for him and couldn't wait to get out of this class. This book should clear up some of the reasons Dr. Schofield behaved as he did and perhaps it will go a long way in explaining the man behind the professor. Dr. Schofield was a fascinating teacher and an inspiration to many. It was an enlightenment to follow his distinguished career in veterinary research. His innovative and rewarding experiments in comparative medicine were accomplished well before anyone else thought to forge that path to improve the well being of animals and humans.

Book In the New World

Download or read book In the New World written by Peter Hyun and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 1995-04-01 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1924 seventeen-year-old Peter Hyun arrived in Hawaii with three younger siblings, leaving behind family and friends in Japanese-occupied Seoul and the Korean community of exiles in Shanghai. The early chapters of this spirited autobiographical account, the sequel to Man Sei!, recount Hyun's life as a young Korean coming of age in Hawaii and as a college student studying philosophy and theatre arts in Indiana. After college, Hyun moved to New York and in 1930 began working as an assistant stage manager with Eva LeGallienne's Civic Repertory Theatre. He later went on to direct theatre companies in New York, Massachusetts, California, and Montreal. As Hyun was one of only a handful of minorities working in the avant garde theatre in the 1930s and 1940s, his account contributes to our understanding of the place of Asians in art outside the mainstream. He also provides a personal perspective on key periods in American race relations, particularly during World War II and the Korean War. In the New World celebrates a rich life full of diversity. Throughout his life, Hyun believed that the making of a Korean American was essentially a cultural marriage - a marriage often requiring a lengthy and difficult engagement to succeed. In the New World is the story of Hyun's engagement, with all its triumphs and misfortunes, told with candor and wit. Peter Hyun died in 1993 at the age of eighty-seven.

Download or read book American Pyongyang written by Robert S. Kim and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-03-25 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents a photographic history of a lost American community in Asia of whose existence few have been aware: the Christian mission of Pyongyang, which from 1895 to 1942 was the center of one of the leading Christian communities on the mainland of Asia. Pyongyang, now known as the capital of North Korea, once was a heavily Christian city where American missionaries founded and led churches, schools, and hospitals. Throughout Korea during the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, American missionaries brought religion, education, science, and the culture and ideas of the West to Koreans eager to embrace them and bring their people and country into the modern world, and the people of Pyongyang led the country in their enthusiasm for the new religion and new outlook on the world. American Presbyterians founded a mission in Pyongyang in 1895, and they and their Korean converts made Pyongyang the most heavily Christian city in Korea and one of the leading centers of Christianity in Asia. Pyongyang's leading role in the spread of Christianity in Asia led to it being called "The Jerusalem of the East." The Jerusalem of the East ceased to exist during the Second World War, and the Communist regime that took over northern Korea after the war eradicated all remaining traces of it. The Americans of Pyongyang have since then been almost completely forgotten in both Korea and the United States. This photographic history tells the story of the Americans of Pyongyang in 88 pages with over 100 period photographs, most of them previously unpublished, and an explanation of the people, the mission, and their historical context.

Book Translations in Korea

Download or read book Translations in Korea written by Wook-Dong Kim and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-03-28 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores practical and theoretical approaches to translation in Korea from the 16th century onwards, examining a variety of translations done in Korea from a diachronic perspective. Offering a discussion of the methodology for translating the Xiaoxue (Lesser or Elementary Learning), a primary textbook for Confucianism in China and other East Asian countries, the book considers the problems involving Korean Bible translation in general and the Term Question in particular. It examines James Scarth Gale, an early Canadian Protestant missionary to Korea, as one of the language’s remarkable translators. The book additionally compares three English versions of the Korean Declaration of Independence of 1919, arguing that the significant differences between them are due both to the translators’ political vision for an independent Korea as well as to their careers and Weltanschauungen. The book concludes with a detailed analysis of Deborah Smith’s English translation of ‘The Vegetarian’ by Han Kang, which won the 2016 Man Booker International Prize for Fiction.

The Records of the Korean Independence Outbreak, currently forming part of the archives in The Burke Library, were sent from Shanghai to Charles Fahs, the librarian of the former Mission Research Library in New York, by Korean Independence leaders in exile during 1919. Book Asia s Unknown Uprisings Volume 1

Download or read book Asia s Unknown Uprisings Volume 1 written by George Katsiaficas and published by PM Press. This book was released on 2012-03-20 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using social movements as a prism to illuminate the oft-hidden history of 20th-century Korea, this book provides detailed analysis of major uprisings that have patterned that country’s politics and society. From the 1894 Tonghak Uprising through the March 1, 1919, independence movement and anti-Japanese resistance, a direct line is traced to the popular opposition to U.S. division of Korea after World War Two. The overthrow of Syngman Rhee in 1960, resistance to Park Chung-hee, the 1980 Gwangju Uprising, as well as student, labor, and feminist movements are all recounted with attention to their economic and political contexts. South Korean opposition to neoliberalism is portrayed in detail, as is an analysis of neoliberalism’s rise and effects. With a central focus on the Gwangju Uprising (that ultimately proved decisive in South Korea’s democratization), the author uses Korean experiences as a baseboard to extrapolate into the possibilities of global social movements in the 21st century. Previous English-language sources have emphasized leaders—whether Korean, Japanese, or American. This book emphasizes grassroots crystallization of counter-elite dynamics and notes how the intelligence of ordinary people surpasses that of political and economic leaders holding the reins of power. It is the first volume in a two-part study that concludes by analyzing in rich detail uprisings in nine other places: the Philippines, Burma, Tibet, China, Taiwan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Thailand, and Indonesia. Richly illustrated, with tables, charts, graphs, index, and endnotes.

Book excerpt: In this autobiographical account of life in Seoul just before the March First uprising in 1919 and exile in Shanghai afterwards, Peter Hyun vividly describes what it was like to grow up in an occupied Korea subjected to Japanese colonial rule. The son of a member of the Korean Provisional Government in Exile, Hyun presents an intimate portrait of that small band of Korean revolutionaries who kept alive the hope of Korean independence. They have been all but forgotten or ignored, and their story, told by an eyewitness, represents a valubale historical record. At the heart of the story are the author's father, the patriot Reverend Soon Hyun, and his mother, Maria Hyun, an extraordinary woman of courage and integrity.

Book We Are Meant to Rise

Download or read book We Are Meant to Rise written by Carolyn Holbrook and published by U of Minnesota Press. This book was released on 2021-11-23 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brilliant and rich gathering of voices on the American experience of this past year and beyond, from Indigenous writers and writers of color from Minnesota In this significant collection, Indigenous writers and writers of color bear witness to one of the most unsettling years in the history of the United States. Essays and poems vividly reflect and comment on the traumas we endured in 2020, beginning with the arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic crisis, deepened by the blatant murder of George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers and the uprisings that immersed our city into the epicenter of passionate, worldwide demands for justice. In inspired and incisive writing these contributors speak unvarnished truths not only to the original and pernicious racism threaded through the American experience but also to the deeply personal, in essays about family, loss, food culture, economic security, and mental health. Their call and response is united here to rise and be heard. We Are Meant to Rise lifts up the astonishing variety of BIPOC writers in Minnesota. From authors with international reputations to newly emerging voices, it features people from many cultures, including Indigenous Dakota and Anishinaabe, African American, Hmong, Somali, Afghani, Lebanese, Korean, Vietnamese, Japanese, Puerto Rican, Colombian, Mexican, transracial adoptees, mixed race, and LGBTQ+ perspectives. Most of the contributors have participated in More Than a Single Story, a popular and insightful conversation series in Minneapolis that features Indigenous and people of color speaking on what most concerns their communities. We Are Meant to Rise meets the events of the day, the year, the centuries before, again and again, with powerful testament to the intrinsic and unique value of the human voice.
