Book Central Bank Reserve Management

Download or read book Central Bank Reserve Management written by Age Bakker and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the welfare gains and costs of accumulating foreign exchange reserves and the implications for the functioning of the global financial system. The tremendous growth of central bank reserves has led to an increased focus on raising returns in addition to the traditional preference central banks have for maintaining liquid portfolios. Issues such as asset and currency diversification, the impact of new accounting rules and the profit distribution agreements with the government are analysed, adding new insights to the current debate on the optimal size of central bank reserves. This book brings together a wide range of experts from central banks, investment banks and the academic community.

Book Determinants of Currency Composition of Reserves a Portfolio Theory Approach with an Application to RMB

Download or read book Determinants of Currency Composition of Reserves a Portfolio Theory Approach with an Application to RMB written by MissYinqiu Lu and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-03-08 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The way central banks manage their foreign reserve assets has evolved over the past decades. One major trend is managing reserves in two or more tranches—liquidity tranche and investment tranche—especially for those with adequate reserves. Incorporating reserve tranching, we have developed in this paper a central bank’s reserve portfolio choice model to analyze the determinants of the currency composition of reserves. In particular, we adopt the classical mean-variance framework for the investment tranche and the asset-liability framework for the liquidity tranche. Building on these frameworks, the roles of currency compositions in imports invoicing and short-term external debt, and risk and returns of reserve currencies can be quantified by our structural model—a key contribution of our paper given the absence of structural models in the literature. Finally, we estimate the potential paths of the share of RMB in reserves under different scenarios to shed light on its status as an international currency.

Book Management of Foreign Exchange Risk

Download or read book Management of Foreign Exchange Risk written by Y. C. Lum and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-02 with total page 1149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a technical and specialised discussion of contemporary and emerging issues in foreign exchange and financial markets by addressing the issues of risk management and theory and hypothesis development, which have general implications for finance theory and foreign exchange market management. It offers an in-depth, comprehensive analysis of the issues concerning the volatility of exchange rates. The book has three main objectives. First, it applies the integrated study of exchange rate volatility in terms of depth and breadth. Second, it applies the integrated study of exchange rate volatility in Malaysia, as a case study of a developing country. Malaysia had imposed capital control measures in the past and has now liberalised its exchange rate market and will continue to liberalise it further in the long run. Hence, the need to understand exchange rate volatility measurement and management will be even more important in the future. Third, the book highlights new conditional volatility models for a developing country, such as Malaysia, and develops advanced econometric models which have produced results for sound risk management strategies and for achieving risk management in the financial market and the economy. Additionally, the authors recommend risk management themes which may be of relevance to other developing countries. This work can be used as a reference book by fund managers, financial market analysts, researchers, academics, practitioners, policy makers and postgraduate students in the areas of finance, accounting, business and financial economics. It can also be a supplementary text for Ph.D. and Masters’ students in these areas.

Book Currency Diversification of Reserves and Sovereign Debt for Small Open Economies

Download or read book Currency Diversification of Reserves and Sovereign Debt for Small Open Economies written by Indi Rajasingham and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1991-11-01 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An approach for minimizing risk through diversification of foreign exchange reserves and sovereign borrowings is proposed for central banks of small open economies. This approach--developed in a simple 2-period, 3-country framework--differs from past work in that the elements of exchange and price risk associated with trade and payments are considered in the portfolio allocation problem. The analysis shows that the net level of reserves and the primary transactions balance affect the optimal portfolio leading to deviations from the optimal allocation prescribed by the classical portfolio model. In addition, this result has implications for the currency composition of exchange market intervention transactions.

Book The Social Cost of Foreign Exchange Reserves

Download or read book The Social Cost of Foreign Exchange Reserves written by Dani Rodrik and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been a very rapid rise since the early 1990s in foreign reserves held by developing countries. These reserves have climbed to almost 30 percent of developing countries' GDP and 8 months of imports. Assuming reasonable spreads between the yield on reserve assets and the cost of foreign borrowing, the income loss to these countries amounts to close to 1 percent of GDP. Conditional on existing levels of short-term foreign borrowing, this does not represent too steep a price as an insurance premium against financial crises. But why developing countries have not tried harder to reduce short-term foreign liabilities in order to achieve the same level of liquidity (thereby paying a smaller cost in terms of reserve accumulation) remains an important puzzle.

Book Guidelines for Foreign Exchange Reserve Management

Download or read book Guidelines for Foreign Exchange Reserve Management written by International Monetary Fund and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2004 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Guidelines for Foreign Exchange Reserve Management have been developed as part of a broader work program undertaken by the IMF to help strengthen the international financial architecture, to promote policies and practices that contribute to stability and transparency in the financial sector, and to reduce external vulnerabilities of member countries. In developing the Guidelines, IMF staff worked in close collaboration with reserve management entities from a broad group of member countries and international institutions in a comprehensive outreach process. The outreach process included regional meetings in Abu Dhabi, Basel, Gaborone, Mexico City, Singapore, and Washington, DC, to discuss earlier versions of the Guidelines. The practitioners' insight that this process brought to the Guidelines has enabled the enunciation of broadly applicable principles as well as institutional and operational foundations that have relevance for members with a wide range of institutional structures at different stages of development.
