Book Self Help in Mental Health

Download or read book Self Help in Mental Health written by T. Mark Harwood and published by Springer. This book was released on 2009-11-24 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Self-help is big business, but alas not a scienti c business. The estimated 10 billion—that’s with a “b”—spent each year on self-help in the United States is rarely guided by research or monitored by mental health professionals. Instead, marketing and metaphysics triumph. The more outrageous the “miraculous cure” and the “r- olutionary secret,” the better the sales. Of the 3,000 plus self-help books published each year, only a dozen contain controlled research documenting their effectiveness as stand-alone self-help. Of the 20,000 plus psychological and relationship web sites available on the Internet, only a couple hundred meet professional standards for accuracy and balance. Most, in fact, sell a commercial product. Pity the layperson, or for that matter, the practitioner, trying to navigate the self-help morass. We are bombarded with thousands of potential resources and c- tradictory advice. Should we seek wisdom in a self-help book, an online site, a 12-step group, an engaging autobiography, a treatment manual, an inspiring movie, or distance writing? Should we just do it, or just say no? Work toward change or accept what is? Love your inner child or grow out of your Peter Pan? I become confused and discouraged just contemplating the choices.

Book My Own Life Map

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gregory Tyree
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2013-07-10
  • ISBN : 9781490526683
  • Pages : 226 pages

Download or read book My Own Life Map written by Gregory Tyree and published by . This book was released on 2013-07-10 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was during a difficult time in my life that I realized that I needed an effective model of life-focusing to guide me in finding direction in their lives. It was on a week-long vacation in Myrtle Beach that these thoughts materialized into a workable life-focusing model. Later I named this new model "My Own Life Focus," which is an eleven-step process fleshed out in five stages. This program has been published in book form, including a companion workbook, as well as a CD Audio Book (in two volumes) and MP3 downloads at Amazon.com. By distributing a pilot edition of the book to various friends and colleagues who promised to give me honest feedback, I was able to produce a high-quality book that has helped many people focus their lives and find more significant success. I knew as I was writing My Own Life Focus that I would eventually write two more volumes to complete what I call the My Own Life System. The first of these is the book you are reading, My Own Life Map, which will be followed by the final book in the series, My Own Life Time. (Ironically, I began writing this second volume during another week-long vacation in Myrtle Beach a year later.) This trilogy is necessary for several reasons. First, My Own Life Focus is a very-involved process that helps you focus on the big picture of your life. It ultimately helps you answer the question, "What should I be doing with my life." Think of this first book as dealing with the goal of establishing an ultimate destination for your life. While you do not need to read My Own Life Focus before reading the present volume, I am confident that you will better understand and apply the principles in this book if you read My Own life Focus first. Second, coming to terms with and deciding on your final destination is not practical without some kind of map to direct your journey. It is one thing to know that you want to go from New York to San Francisco; it is quite another to know how to get there. My Own Life Map does just that. Like the first book, the title is self-descriptive. While My Own Life Focus helps you focus your life for more significant success, My Own Life Map helps you map-out your journey which began with life-focusing. Think of this current stage as life-mapping. Finally, there is even one more step beyond life-focusing and life-mapping; you must engage in life-management. That is what the third installment of this series, My Own Life Time, will help you with. Life-management has to do with the day-to-day strategies, tactics, and habits that are necessary for you to successfully navigate to your ultimate destination. So the My Own Life System consists of three processes:1. Life-Focusing (My own Life Focus)This is an eleven-step process to help you know who you want to be and what you want to do with your life.2. Life Mapping (My Own Life Map)This is an eight-step strategic planning model to help you map-out your journey. 3. Life-Management (My Own Life Time)This last volume is an implementation tool to help you in the day-to-day management of your time, talents, and treasure. If you have made a decision concerning who you are and what you want to do, roll up your sleeves and dig in to the exciting process of life-mapping!
