Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Secretary of War of the United States receives a letter sent to his and all other nations, declaring that war has too long devastated the earth and the time has come for peace. It orders them to destroy their weapons of warfare and disband their militaries. The letter ends: "One year from this date will I allow for disarmament and no more. At the end of that time, if no heed has been paid to my injunction, I will destroy, in rapid succession, every battleship in the world. By the happenings of the next two months you shall know that my words are the words of truth." It is signed "The man who will stop all war." The government officials at first dismiss this as a letter from a crank. Then a few battleships vanish, one per week, without a trace. What new technology enables this man to carry out his threat? Can he be found and stopped? Will the major powers of the world agree to disarm or will they blame each other and start a war? Recipe: Take an American investigative reporter, add his science professor friend and the professor's beautiful intelligent sister, throw in some early 20th century quasi-science, some romantic longing, some detective work in London, and a good measure of suspense. Book excerpt: Excerpt from God's War To tho end that the memory of tho men and women whose valor and sacrifices defended and preserved the Republic through the trial as by fire of tho gloat civil war in America shall not perish from the earth; that their descendants and successors may appreciate tho splendor of the steadfast patriotism and patient resolute endurance to which humanity owes so much; and in the hope that the world may the better understand and value the lessons taught by a divinely ordained educational process, this story has been written. Persuaded that its faults must be many and grievous (since, how should a plain layman, sometime soldier, with no claims to literary skill, avoid them?), and conscious of its inadequacy, the author submits it; trusting that it may, at least in some small degree, accomplish the work whereunto it is sent. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of the War Since the President's proclamation of August 20, 1866, referring to the great rebellion, declared the, insurrection at an end, a vast number of those who were intelligent observers or actors in the events of that period have passed away, and a new generation of men has appeared on the stage of action. To them the rebellion and its stirring incidents are matters of history, of which they know nothing from observation, or from information acquired during that eventful period. Whatever will throw light on these must be of deep interest to thoughtful minds at present, and for all future time. They impart lessons, and are fraught with results, which should be understood by every citizen of the United States. Book A Concise Chronicle of Events of the Great War Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Concise Chronicle of Events of the Great War Classic Reprint written by R. P. P. Rowe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concise Chronicle of Events of the Great War I trust that this chronicle of the chief events of the war will prove a useful and an interesting record. It has been decided to omit maps, because their inclusion within bounds less than cumbersome would prove practically worthless. The number of towns, as opposed to villages, which were definitely connected with the war is surprisingly small, and their locality is known to nearly every one. The great majority of places which the war has brought into prominence are villages so small that they are marked only in maps of an exceptionally large scale. What is required, therefore, for adequate study of the topography of the war, is either a moderate number of maps of great size or a far larger and confusing number less bulky but each covering only a small area. As the inclusion of either would necessitate a detached and cumbrous volume, I have in its absence taken pains to indicate accurately the posi tion of every place whose locality might be unfamiliar. In the following pages the names given to the battles, and the dates on which they began and ended, are from sources either official or authoritative. The same may be said of the strategical or tactical aims or results which I have in some cases noted - particularly in 1918. Book Young People s History of the World War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Young People s History of the World War Classic Reprint written by Louis P. Benezet and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Young People's History, of the World War The lesson of the World War is a tremendous one. Summed up in a single sentence it is, It must never happen again. The morale of the men in the trenches, on the allied side, at least, was kept up through the weary years of struggle by the persistent propaganda that this was to be the last war, the war to end war. We are playing falsely with the nine million dead, - the flower of the young man hood of a dozen nations if we fail to keep before the minds of their young brothers the glorious story of their sacrifice and the awful needlessness of it all. If war is to be blotted off the face of the earth, each must do his bit. This small contribution is offered to swell the mighty and ever growing vol ume of demands that nations, like individuals, deal with each other openly, honorably, and without greed. When that day shall have come, the navies and armies of the world will have gone the way of the rapier, which every gentleman of the sixteenth century was obliged to carry, or the six - shooter, which took the place of courts and juries in the days of '49. While this volume is written for the understand ing of young people, it is the hope of the author that many older readers may find in his pages some thing to repay their time. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Boy in Gray: A Story of the War This book has been written for the young people who are interested in the story of the stirring scenes through which their fathers passed. It is needless to say that it is not a true record of personal life; it is no more history than is Robinson Crusoe or the Pilgrim's Progress. The facts stated as historic are to be relied upon. Many of these came under my own eye, when I went over the ground which Roger speaks of in his campaign. The pictures of Georgia life are, I think, correctly drawn, and ought not to fade out entirely. This little book has been written in the interest of peace, and I have been anxious that the Southern boys and girls who will be largely and almost exclusively my readers should see not only how nobly their fathers bore themselves in the war, and how grandly their mothers and sisters toiled at home, but that they should see how really noble and generous were many of those who were on the other side. If any one should object that these characters had no counterparts in real life, I can only say that they have not heard the whole story and that, while such cases were too rare, there were such. The absence of malice between the soldiers was a remarkable feature of the contest; and if there has been feelings of bitterness between the North and the South, it is high time for them to have an end. The children of the old English people who settled America, whether they landed at jamestown or Plymouth Rock, have too much in common to be at enmity now. Com mon dangers are too near them for them to vex each other. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Development of Tactics World War Classic Reprint

Download or read book Development of Tactics World War Classic Reprint written by Balck Balck and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Development of Tactics World War It is hoped that this work will have its share in em phasizing the experiences of the war that have been pur chased with so much blood, and which experiences may easily run the danger of being lost in the dissolution of our old, tried army. May these pages call back to mind what our troops have performed, the equal of which can not be found in military history, by heavy work against an enemy so superior in numbers and equipped with all possible auxiliary means. But the heroic achievements of our troops were possible only because all members of the army performed untiring and devoted work in time of peace, in the matter of training the men to faithful per formance of duty, willingness to assume responsibility and audacity. I have but briefly touched on the end of the army; my theme ends upon the battlefield; the awful dissolution process and the failures at home, are beyond the limits of tactics. Therefore, I have purposely avoided touching on the unfortunate struggles in the interior of our country. This book of mine is not for the purpose of accusing, neither is it for the purpose of excusing errors that have been committed. I have merely touched where it was abso lutely necessary. My only endeavor has been to show how our present day tactics had their being and how they, starting from an excellent peace training, adapted them selves to the continually more difficult demands of battle. Though the war could not end with victory on the battle field, that surely was not the fault of the army, nor of its leaders. I shall be very thankful for any corrections and addi tions.
