It has been decided to omit maps, because their inclusion within bounds less than cumbersome would prove practically worthless. The number of towns, as opposed to villages, which were definitely connected with the war is surprisingly small, and their locality is known to nearly every one. The great majority of places which the war has brought into prominence are villages so small that they are marked only in maps of an exceptionally large scale. What is required, therefore, for adequate study of the topography of the war, is either a moderate number of maps of great size or a far larger and confusing number less bulky but each covering only a small area. As the inclusion of either would necessitate a detached and cumbrous volume, I have in its absence taken pains to indicate accurately the posi tion of every place whose locality might be unfamiliar. The absence of malice between the soldiers was a remarkable feature of the contest; and if there has been feelings of bitterness between the North and the South, it is high time for them to have an end. The children of the old English people who settled America, whether they landed at jamestown or Plymouth Rock, have too much in common to be at enmity now. Therefore, I have purposely avoided touching on the unfortunate struggles in the interior of our country. This book of mine is not for the purpose of accusing, neither is it for the purpose of excusing errors that have been committed. I have merely touched where it was abso lutely necessary. My only endeavor has been to show how our present day tactics had their being and how they, starting from an excellent peace training, adapted them selves to the continually more difficult demands of battle. Though the war could not end with victory on the battle field, that surely was not the fault of the army, nor of its leaders. I shall be very thankful for any corrections and addi tions.
