Book Chasing a Whirlwind

Download or read book Chasing a Whirlwind written by Charles Dixon and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2021-12-01 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles (Chuck) Dixon wrote “Chasing a Whirlwind” to share his adventures during the 75 years of his life and career in aviation. His life is a story of ambition and determination to reach goals that were often challenging and adventurous. God, family, country, and aviation were the driving factors in his life. He almost lost his life due to rogue whirlwinds or vortices created by powerful military aircraft early in his career. Vortices are necessary for an airplane to fly, and as an aerodynamicist, Chuck was determined to learn how to maximize their effectiveness. During his years working at two major aircraft companies Chuck thought out of the box and created patents that enhanced his work for the rest of his career. His sense of adventure gave him many opportunities to explore the great outdoors and kept him fit during his long life. After an early retirement, and the death of his wife Mary, Chuck won two proposals. First to the Air Force to pursue the creation of a specialty software that could predict stability and control effects of most types of aircraft. The second proposal was marriage to Frieda who would be his lifelong partner in his new business and the co-author of this life story. Sharing his faith in God with co-workers and others became a cornerstone of Chuck’s life. His belief in the power of God to bring abundant life to everyone he met, inspired him to invite others to find God’s peace in this world.

Book The Man Who Caught the Storm

Download or read book The Man Who Caught the Storm written by Brantley Hargrove and published by Simon & Schuster. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The saga of the greatest tornado chaser who ever lived: a tale of obsession and daring and an extraordinary account of humanity’s high-stakes race to understand nature’s fiercest phenomenon from Brantley Hargrove, “one of today’s great science writers” (The Washington Post). At the turn of the twenty-first century, the tornado was one of the last true mysteries of the modern world. It was a monster that ravaged the American heartland a thousand times each year, yet science’s every effort to divine its inner workings had ended in failure. Researchers all but gave up, until the arrival of an outsider. In a field of PhDs, Tim Samaras didn’t attend a day of college in his life. He chased storms with brilliant tools of his own invention and pushed closer to the tornado than anyone else ever dared. When he achieved what meteorologists had deemed impossible, it was as if he had snatched the fire of the gods. Yet even as he transformed the field, Samaras kept on pushing. As his ambitions grew, so did the risks. And when he finally met his match—in a faceoff against the largest tornado ever recorded—it upended everything he thought he knew. Brantley Hargrove delivers a “cinematically thrilling and scientifically wonky” (Outside) tale, chronicling the life of Tim Samaras in all its triumph and tragedy. Hargrove takes readers inside the thrill of the chase, the captivating science of tornadoes, and the remarkable character of a man who walked the line between life and death in pursuit of knowledge. The Man Who Caught the Storm is an “adrenaline rush of a tornado chase…Readers from all across the spectrum will enjoy this” (Library Journal, starred review) unforgettable exploration of obsession and the extremes of the natural world.

Book The Whirlwind Shivaji Mahasamrat Series Book 1

Download or read book The Whirlwind Shivaji Mahasamrat Series Book 1 written by Vishwas Patil and published by Eka. This book was released on 2022 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Book A MAGNIFICENT PREAMBLE TO THE RISE OF THE FORMIDABLE MARATHA EMPIRE Even as Shahaji Bhosale and his clan served in the Mughal armies, under the Nizams of the Ahmednagar Sultanate and later the Adilshahs of Bijapur, they carried deep in their hearts the dream of ‘Swarajya’, an autonomous dominion for the Marathas. That aspiration begins to take shape as Shahaji’s son Shivaji unites the youth of the Maaval region under the banner of Hindvi Swarajya. The Shivaji Mahasamrat Series of novels is Vishwas Patil’s most ambitious work thus far. Few books on the establishment of the Maratha Empire have recreated so deftly the many durbars of seventeenth-century India, their political intrigues and war tactics, or revealed so much about the lives of Shivaji’s forebears—especially, Shahaji Bhosale, an extraordinary warrior in his own right, and Jijabai, who came from a family of dauntless fighters and was an astute stateswoman. This first volume, a magnificent preamble to the rise of the formidable Maratha Empire, culminates in the bloody battle fought in the densely forested and uninhabitable mountains of Jawali in 1659, where Shivaji grinds the powerful Adilshahi general Afzal Khan and his massive Bijapur army into the dirt. The result of over a decade’s research and keen craftsmanship, The Whirlwind is a sweeping saga of a young warrior king’s glorious journey towards independence.

Book Look for Me in the Whirlwind

Download or read book Look for Me in the Whirlwind written by Sekou Odinga and published by PM Press. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 671 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amid music festivals and moon landings, the tumultuous year of 1969 included an infamous case in the annals of criminal justice and Black liberation: the New York City Black Panther 21. Though some among the group had hardly even met one another, the 21 were rounded up by the FBI and New York Police Department in an attempt to disrupt and destroy the organization that was attracting young people around the world. Involving charges of conspiracy to commit violent acts, the Panther 21 trial—the longest and most expensive in New York history—revealed the illegal government activities which led to exile, imprisonment on false charges, and assassination of Black liberation leaders. Solidarity for the 21 also extended well beyond “movement” circles and included mainstream publication of their collective autobiography, Look for Me in the Whirlwind, which is reprinted here for the first time. Look for Me in the Whirlwind: From the Panther 21 to 21st-Century Revolutions contains the entire original manuscript, and includes new commentary from surviving members of the 21: Sekou Odinga, Dhoruba Bin Wahad, Jamal Joseph, and Shaba Om. Still-imprisoned Sundiata Acoli, Imam Jamil Al-Amin, and Mumia Abu-Jamal contribute new essays. Never or rarely seen poetry and prose from Afeni Shakur, Kuwasi Balagoon, Ali Bey Hassan, and Michael “Cetewayo” Tabor is included. Early Panther leader and jazz master Bilal Sunni-Ali adds a historical essay and lyrics from his composition “Look for Me in the Whirlwind,” and coeditors kioni-sadiki, Meyer, and Panther rank-and-file member Cyril “Bullwhip” Innis Jr. help bring the story up to date. At a moment when the Movement for Black Lives recites the affirmation that “it is our duty to win,” penned by Black Liberation Army (BLA) militant Assata Shakur, those who made up the BLA and worked alongside of Assata are largely unknown. This book—with archival photos from David Fenton, Stephen Shames, and the private collections of the authors— provides essential parts of a hidden and missing-in-action history. Going well beyond the familiar and mythologized nostalgic Panther narrative, From the Panther 21 to 21st-Century Revolutions explains how and why the Panther legacy is still relevant and vital today.

Book Whirlwind of African Insanity

Download or read book Whirlwind of African Insanity written by Lawrence N. Zarkpah and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-10-05 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liberia, a small West African nation imploded in a civil war that began on December 24, 1989. By the time the war ended fourteen years later, more than 250,000 lives had been taken. Many people sought refuge in camps throughout West Africa. In the war, children were trained to become killing machines, and women and young girls were held as sex slaves. Charles Taylor, the main mastermind behind this rebellion, was elected President of Liberia in 1997. Liberians thought that his presidency would lead to the end of the civil war, but it only extended the war. Adding to the pressure, Taylor faced accusations of war crimes. He relinquished power in August 2003 and was escorted to Nigeria where he was subsequently arrested and taken to the International Criminal Court at The Hague. Whirlwind of African Insanity is not just my story. It resonates with the countless voices of children who suffer and die in wars about which they know nothing. The book also provides some of the reasons why Africa is and may forever remain plagued. It presents two arguments about the real causes of Africas disasters and is written on behalf of underprivileged children whose cries for help are drowned in oceans of selfish politics and whose lives are buried in the explosions of wars. It is also a story about survival in hellish conditions and optimism when there is nothing about which to be optimistic.

There is intrigue, politics, murder, mystery, power of women, life of the nobility and ordinary folk, war and ambition. Tamil culture and and Chozla history from 1000 years ago comes to life. This English translation by Indra Neelameggham maintains Kalki's "Nadai" or cadence of the original Tamil. Indra was the first to translate this epic into English as early as the 1990s. This five part novel introduces the grandeur of the Chozla Dynasty of Tamil people, whose empire at one time spanned large areas of south east Asia. They were famous for art, architecture, irrigation works, administration, naval warfare and most importantly global trade because of their naval prowess. The Grand Anaicut one of the oldest, still in use dams across any major river, was built by the Chozlas. The huge complex known as 'Big Temple ' in Tanjavur was built more than a thousand years ago by Rajaraja, the main character in this novel. He is known as the Beloved of the River Ponni , the Tamil name for The Cauvery. The activities of common folk, nobility, ordinary soldiers, the power wielded by women, conniving statesmen, terrorists, treason, war, pirates, murder and turmoil for a throne are the core threads in this panoramic story. References to Tamil poetry and myth enrich the story. Kalki brought the meticulously researched history to the doorsteps of millions who were proud that they too had 'history' beyond what was shared by colonial books. It is soon to be released as a major multi language motion picture filmed with latest technology in locations in many countries. This book and its art work has thrilled generations of readers. This translation is sure to enthrall many more persons all over the world. Indra has brought this English version to help readers overcome the limitation of not knowing Tamil. • Pages : 433 pages

Download or read book Whirlwind written by John Ferling and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2016-05-10 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in the authoritative and narrative-driven style that made his books The Ascent of George Washington and Jefferson and Hamilton critical and commercial successes, John Ferling's Whirlwind will become the definitive history of the American Revolution for our time. A master historian and superb teller of history, Ferling illuminates the years 1763 to 1783--from the end of the French and Indian War that left England triumphant in North America to the signing of the Treaty of Paris in September 1783 and the final departure of British troops from New York City in November of that year. Ferling is as astute at analyzing the causes and politics of the American Revolution as he is skilled at narrating the battles of the Revolutionary War. With original insight, he chronicles the myriad and complex events and contentious viewpoints that drove Americans in their insurgency against Great Britain and sustained them in the seemingly quixotic belief that they could win their independence. He takes us to the halls of power in Parliament and the streets of London to view the Revolution from all British perspectives. He presents the individual battles, from Lexington and Concord to Yorktown, in a fresh and dramatic new light. With a wide scope and penetrating insight, embracing characters both celebrated and unknown, John Ferling brings the most important event in America's history to a new generation of American readers.
