Here, she is to rest alone – forbidden to leave her room. Instead of improving, she starts hallucinating, imagining herself crawling with other women behind the room's yellow wallpaper. The Yellow Wall-Paper [1892] is the short but intense, Gothic horror story, written as a diary, about a woman in an attic – imprisoned in her gender; by the story. Charlotte Perkins Gilman's feminist novella was long overlooked in American literary history. Nowadays, it is counted among the classics. Her most famous work is the short story The Yellow Wall-Paper [1892], written when she suffered from postpartum psychosis.

Book excerpt: Charlotte Perkins Gilman's The Man-Made World is a 1911 book-length essay about what she calls "our androcentric culture." By this she means a culture built mostly for the convenience of one gender and which disregards the other; a culture in which the male is seen as the default and the female as a deviation from the norm. Gilman carefully analyses the consequences of this patriarchal culture on several areas, including the family, health and beauty, art and literature, education, ethics, religion, law and government, politics, economics, and so on.

Book excerpt: In this probing critique of "androcentric culture," pioneering feminist Charlotte Perkins Gilman analyzes with wit and insight the many negative effects of male domination, not only on women in particular but on the welfare of the human race as a whole. Society's long history of male hegemony and female subservience has not enhanced the natural qualities of the human race but rather distorted them, says Gilman, as can be seen in many of society's institutions. In separate chapters she discusses family, art, literature, games and sports, ethics and religion, education, fashion, law and government, crime and punishment, politics and warfare, and industry and economics. In each case she shows how the domineering male influence has caused grievous problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though many pioneering feminists were deeply influenced by American pragmatism, their contemporary followers have generally ignored that tradition because of its marginalization by a philosophical mainstream intent on neutral analyses devoid of subjectivity. In this revealing work, Charlene Haddock Seigfried effectively reunites two major social and philosophical movements, arguing that pragmatism, because of its focus on the emancipatory potential of everyday experiences, offers feminism its most viable and powerful philosophical foundation. With careful attention to their interwoven histories and contemporary concerns, Pragmatism and Feminism effectively invigorates both traditions, opening them to new interpretations and appropriations and asserting their timely philosophical relevance. This foundational work in feminist theory simultaneously invites and guides future scholarship in an area of rapidly emerging significance.

Book Our Androcentric Culture

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our Androcentric Culture or The Man Made World by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Complete New Edition. Let us begin, inoffensively, with sheep. The sheep is a beast with which we are all familiar, being much used in religious imagery; the common stock of painters; a staple article of diet; one of our main sources of clothing; and an everyday symbol of bashfulness and stupidity. In some grazing regions the sheep is an object of terror, destroying grass, bush and forest by omnipresent nibbling; on the great plains, sheep-keeping frequently results in insanity, owing to the loneliness of the shepherd, and the monotonous appearance and behavior of the sheep. By the poet, young sheep are preferred, the lamb gambolling gaily; unless it be in hymns, where "all we like sheep" are repeatedly described, and much stress is laid upon the straying propensities of the animal. To the scientific mind there is special interest in the sequacity of sheep, their habit of following one another with automatic imitation. This instinct, we are told, has been developed by ages of wild crowded racing on narrow ledges, along precipices, chasms, around sudden spurs and corners, only the leader seeing when, where and how to jump. If those behind jumped exactly as he did, they lived. If they stopped to exercise independent judgment, they were pushed off and perished; they and their judgment with them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Man-Made World (1911) is a sociological study by American author and feminist Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Inspired by her work as a social reformer and advocate for women’s suffrage, Gilman sought to write a work of nonfiction that explained the effects of patriarchy not only on the lives of women, but on the structure and health of society at large. In the beginning, Gilman observes that though biology naturally attributes motherhood and fatherhood to women and men respectively, there is no evolutionary explanation for the widespread control of men over all other human activities. This inequity, Gilman explains, is what she means by the term “Androcentric Culture,” a culture organized by men, for men. Having established her thesis, Gilman dedicates chapters to such topics as the family, health, art, sports, religion, education, government, economics, and warfare in order to observe the impact of male domination on each. Ultimately, Gilman asks what, if anything, will men lose if women are granted the rights and responsibilities they have no reason not to share. The Man-Made World is a thorough and powerful experiment in sociological thought and a groundbreaking work of feminist nonfiction. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Man-Made World is a classic of American literature and nonfiction reimagined for modern readers.
