In this volume he relates the first four years of his outdoor odyssey, from his initial escapist trips, through his gradual move towards full-time outdoor living, to his decision to put the harsh British winters behind him and head off to the more benign climate of southern Spain. Sincere but light-hearted, this memoir recounts his experiences in Lancashire, Yorkshire and Scotland, alongside the mental journey leading to his conviction that a conventional life is no longer for him, despite the well-meaning advice of his family and friends.

Book excerpt: THE MAN IN THE TENT - MY LIFE UNDER CANVAS: GETTING STARTED IN SPAIN is the continuation of Tony Beardsall's light-hearted account of the outdoor life which he commenced at the age of fifty-one. In this stand-alone volume he describes his first months on Spanish soil, from his mobile first winter in eastern Andalusia, through a more static period in the north of Malaga, to further travels in search of the perfect place to settle down, in a tent, of course. Readers of THE MAN IN THE TENT - MY LIFE UNDER CANVAS: THE FIRST FOUR YEARS will be familiar with Tony's modus operandi, but a short summary of it in the new book renders it unessential reading for those only interested in the Spanish part of his story. Part Three is now also available.

Book The Red Tent 20th Anniversary Edition

Download or read book The Red Tent 20th Anniversary Edition written by Anita Diamant and published by St. Martin's Press. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this modern classic interpretation of the biblical story of Dinah, Anita Diamant imagines the traditions and turmoils of ancient womanhood--the world of The Red Tent, a New York Times bestseller and the basis of the A&E/Lifetime mini-series. Twentieth Anniversary Edition In the Bible, Dinah's life is only hinted at in a brief and violent detour within the more familiar chapters of the Book of Genesis that tell of her father, Jacob, and his twelve sons. The Red Tent begins with the story of the mothers--Leah, Rachel, Zilpah, and Bilhah--the four wives of Jacob. They love Dinah and give her gifts that sustain her through childhood, a calling to midwifery, and a new home in a foreign land. Dinah's story reaches out from a remarkable period of early history and creates an intimate connection with the past. Deeply affecting, The Red Tent combines rich storytelling and the valuable achievement of presenting a new view of biblical women's lives.

Book The Big Tent

    Book Details:
  • Author : Gregory J. Renoff
  • Publisher : University of Georgia Press
  • Release : 2012-11-01
  • ISBN : 0820344370

Download or read book The Big Tent written by Gregory J. Renoff and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2012-11-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many people, the circus, with its clowns, exotic beasts, and other colorful iconography, is lighthearted entertainment. Yet for Greg Renoff and other scholars, the circus and its social context also provide a richly suggestive repository of changing attitudes about race, class, religion, and consumerism. In the South during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, traveling circuses fostered social spaces where people of all classes and colors could grapple with the region’s upheavals. The Big Tent relates the circus experience from the perspectives of its diverse audiences, telling what locals might have seen and done while the show was in town. Renoff digs deeper, too. He points out, for instance, that the performances of these itinerant outfits in Jim Crow-era Georgia allowed boisterous, unrestrained interaction between blacks and whites on show lots and on city streets on Circus Day. Renoff also looks at encounters between southerners and the largely northern population of circus owners, promoters, and performers, who were frequently accused of inciting public disorder and purveying lowbrow prurience, in part due to residual anger over the Civil War. By recasting itself as a showcase of athleticism, equestrian skill, and God’s wondrous animal creations, the circus appeased community leaders, many of whose businesses prospered during circus visits. Ranging across a changing social, cultural, and economic landscape, The Big Tent tells a new history of what happened when the circus came to town, from the time it traveled by wagon and river barge through its heyday during the railroad era and into its initial decline in the age of the automobile and mass consumerism.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Her mother told them they were daughters of a god. But can the children of gods hurt? Can they die and fail like any other mortal? Penthesilea knew her life was different. Growing up on the lush island of the Amazons, she and her sister lived on the cusp of two worlds—the warlike one of men and the soft and mothering one of women. But Amazonian girls learn to fight, to defend their home, to battle their enemies. They are neither soft nor cold, neither fully female nor male in their traditions. However, the outside world breaks their peace, and Pen finds her sister drawn to the men outside in a way she herself cannot understand. When tragedy befalls the sisters, Pen and her warrior women journey to Troy, the site of the legendary war between friend and foe, where the Amazon queen must decide between tradition and a new sort of life that only she can define. The Trojan War made famous Hector, Achilles, and Aeneas, but there are also Penthesilea and her Amazons and a host of legendary characters, their stories stripped of magic and deus ex machina, bared to the world as simple men and women, struggling against the often-deadly fates foretold in myth.

Book Trek Studies about the Mobility of the Pioneering Population at the Cape

Download or read book Trek Studies about the Mobility of the Pioneering Population at the Cape written by PJ van der Merwe and published by African Sun Media. This book was released on 2022-12-20 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work on the pioneering history of the Boers in the Cape Colony (South Africa) before the Great Trek (1835-1846) is primarily based on research in various archives and libraries. However, the author PJ van der Merwe (1912-1979) found it desirable to personally visit different areas mentioned in the book to get to know the country and the people better and to gather oral tradition and personal information. In carrying out this fieldwork during 1938 and 1939, the author covered 15,000 miles by car and questioned hundreds of people (old pioneers, farmers, teachers, magistrates, school inspectors, livestock inspectors, surveyors and police agents). This investigation not only enabled him to better interpret the sometimes fragmentary data found in the archives and old travel descriptions, but also served to supplement it.

Download or read book Best Tent Camping Texas written by Wendal Withrow and published by Menasha Ridge Press. This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the High Plains of the Panhandle to the tropics of the south, Texas is great for car camping weekends. In a modern world often dominated by big cities, big concrete, and little computer screens, Best Tent Camping: Texas by Wendel Withrow is not only a guidebook, but it's also an escape manual for all nature lovers who dare to dream of a different existence. This book will help the reader navigate the back roads of Texas to find those special locales that will give the overworked, overstressed city dweller 50 special places to recharge his or her head, heart, and soul. This fully updated and now full color guidebook provides detailed campground maps, key information (such as facility details, fees, restrictions), driving directions, a rating system (subjective, of course), and, most importantly, firsthand information about which sites provide the best tent camping experience to avoid the R.V. scene as much as possible. To help make the perfect campground easy to find, the guide is divided into the major geographical areas of Texas and provides cross-referencing for parks that emphasize certain activities. Traveling thousands of miles across the huge expanse of Texas, Wendel visited each campground to report up-to-date and accurate information for the next tent camper who is looking for that special place of solitude and comfort. Based on more than 30 years of following the little-known back roads of Texas, the individual park and site descriptions will give you a head start on where to put down those tent stakes for a night or a week (if you are lucky enough to really slow down the hectic pace that most of us seem forced to keep). The book also contains local history, local attractions, camping tips, and recommended reading material to enhance your knowledge of the area or expand your understanding of Texas's natural features.
