Book excerpt: A jaw-dropping insider look into the world of the so-called "Hollywood Sex Cult" NXIVM chronicling the rise of enigmatic cult leader, Keith Raniere, from its "Patient Zero," his former girlfriend and test subject for his coercive control techniques. Many have heard of NXIVM and its creator, Keith Raniere, the unassuming Albany man now prosecuted for ensnaring tens of thousands of people in the US, Mexico, Canada and elsewhere, to do his bidding and pay millions of dollars to participate in his self-improvement methodology. But where did Keith Raniere begin? Enter Toni Natalie, Keith's Patient Zero, the first one indoctrinated into Raniere's methodology and the first one to escape. THE PROGRAM begins with the origin story of NXIVM, follows its rise to international prominence, and takes the reader into the downfall of Raniere through Toni's eyes. During this time she bore witness to the evolution of his methodology, including his use of sex, blackmail, and employment of psychological tools such as neuro-linguistic programming to control and punish those who would not heed his wishes. She uniquely details the fortunes lost and the lives left in disarray that she witnessed contemporaneously, including members of DOS, a group of women coerced into sexual acts under the guise of a "women's empowerment" inner circle, whom Raniere exercised extreme control over directly and through his lieutenants. But far from being a victim's story, in the spirit of Erin Brockovich, Toni's is a nuanced narrative of a multi-dimensional woman saving herself, and then working tirelessly to help other women do the same for themselves. Today, Toni is happy, reunited with her son, and surrounded by friends and family--it is this perspective that makes her such a unique storyteller.

Book excerpt: Hardin Hammond was just an infant in his mother's arms when the family was thrown out of their home by Federal soldiers in August of 1862, the beginning of the Civil War. Hardin's parents, John Robert and Mary Owen Hammond, moved their family deeper into the Missouri countryside to escape the war. By following his father's sage advice, Hardin grew to be a hardworking and honest man. He faced many challenges in his forty-six years of life. He outwitted would-be thieves and murderers at age fifteen while traveling alone to attend business school in Quincy, Illinois. He mourned the loss of nine of his thirteen siblings and that of his beloved wife, Lillie, when she was only thirty-eight-years-old. Because of his vow to "do the right thing," Hardin experienced many successes. His ranch, Pleasant Valley Stock Farm, flourished, and he was recognized in his community for his service to humanity and his upright moral and ethical values. Based upon the Hammond family history preserved throughout the years, Hardin's Legacy is one man's story of success, compassion, love, and tragedy. His values and philosophy were embodied in his life's motto, "endeavor to do right."

Book John Wesley Hardin

Download or read book John Wesley Hardin written by Leon Claire Metz and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1998-03-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thus spoke one lawman about John Wesley Hardin, easily the most feared and fearless of all the gunfighters in the West. Nobody knows the exact number of his victims-perhaps as few as twenty or as many as fifty. In his way of thinking, Hardin never shot a man who did not deserve it. Seeking to gain insight into Hardin’s homicidal mind, Leon Metz describes how Hardin’s bloody career began in post-Civil War Central Texas, when lawlessness and killings were commonplace, and traces his life of violence until his capture and imprisonment in 1878. After numerous unsuccessful escape attempts, Hardin settled down and received a pardon years later in 1895. He wrote an autobiography but did not live to see it published. Within a few months of his release, John Selman gunned him down in an El Paso saloon.

Book Preacherman s Son Gunfighter John Wesley Hardin

Download or read book Preacherman s Son Gunfighter John Wesley Hardin written by Jack White and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2014-08-26 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Wesley Hardin was the son of a Methodist minister who named his second boy after the founder of his church. The Reverend wanted Wes to become a man of faith; along the way the Preacherman's son drifted. By the time Wes was 15 he shot and killed 4 men. These deaths were the gateway to a killing spree that lasted ten years. Not a serial killer the majority of Hardin's shootings were carried out in the old west tradition; the man with the fastest draw wins. By the time Hardin was 25 he had killed 42 men. Wes' life story reads like an old fashioned, page turning murder mystery. The action takes place immediately after the Civil War during the Reconstruction period. He was the most wanted man in the state; Texas Rangers, local Sheriffs, Union Soldiers and numerous bounty hunters frantically looked for John Wesley Hardin. If you enjoy a thriller Preacherman's Son will not disappoint. My heartfelt wish is you will enjoy reading my historical novel as much as I did penning the words.
