Book excerpt: Now it happened that one day the girl-cat met a man-fox who she knew possessed the same preternatural ability to shapeshift, for she could sense his otherworldly power."Oh, he is clever and full of experience and much esteemed in the world we live in," murmured Maggie to herself, soft peach-colored eyes on the handsome fox."Good day, Mr. Fox! How are you?" She spoke quite kindly to the other shifter. "How is everything with you? How are you getting on in these hard times?"Jaxon the man-fox, who was full of all kinds of arrogance, looked at her from head to paw, wondered for a long moment whether or not he would give any answer. He at last said, "Oh, you childish beard-cleaner, you little piebald fool, you hungry mouse-hunter, what can you be thinking of?"His bushy tail swung to and fro vigorously, clearly conveying the great annoyance he felt. "Have you the impertinence to ask how I'm getting on, girl-cat? What have you learned since living here? How many arts do you understand?"Slightly offended, Maggie proudly lifted her head, eagerly proclaimed, "I understand but one art!""What art is that?" asked Jaxon, amused by both her audacious tone and attitude."When the coyotes are chasing me down, I can spring into a tree and save my skin." She began to swing her own tail, a saucy purr vibrating through her sleek form.Jaxon had heard rumors of a clever leaping cat who could, in the blink of an eye, morph into a lovely human female--just as he could become a man at will--and yet, he had ignored all he had heard, cared not to discover this creature--this fellow shifter. In truth, he found himself becoming quite attracted to the tiny girl-cat, growing more and more eager to see her leap, to gaze upon her in human form.WARNING: This work contains strong language and explicit sexual content such as graphic descriptions of bodily fluid. Book Wonders of Creation and the Singularities of Painting

Download or read book Wonders of Creation and the Singularities of Painting written by Carboni Stefano Carboni and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this book is the so-called London Qazvini, an early 14th-century illustrated Arabic copy of al-Qazvini's The Wonders of Creation and the Oddities of Existing Things, which was acquired by the British Library in 1983 (Or. 14140). As is commonly the case for copies of this text, the London Qazvini is lavishly illustrated, with 368 extant paintings out of the estimated original ca. 520.Its large format, ambitious illustrative cycle and the fine quality of many of the illustrations suggest that the atelier where it was produced must have been well-established and able to attract craftsmen from different parts of the Ilkhanid area. It also suggests that its patron was wealthy and curious about scientific, encyclopedic and cajA 'ib literature, and keen to experiment with the illustration of new texts like this work, which had been composed by the author only two or three decades earlier. The only centre that was capable of gathering such artistic influences ranging from Anatolia to Mesopotamia appears to have been Mosul. The London QazvA nA is an important newly surfaced document for the study of early illustrated Arabic copies of this text, representing the second earliest known surviving manuscript, as well as for the study of Ilkhanid painting. In a single and unique manuscript are gathered earlier Mesopotamian painting traditions, North Jaziran-Seljuq elements, Anatolian inspirations, the latest changes brought about after the advent of the Mongols, and a number of illustrations of extraordinary subjects which escape a proper classification.

This book was released on 2015-05-22 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Selected Works of Andrew Lang: Volume 1Anthropology: Fairy Tale, Folklore, the Origins of Religion, Psychical ResearchEdited by Andrew Teverson, Alexandra Warwick and Leigh WilsonThis is the first critical edition of the works of Andrew Lang (1844-1912), the Scottish writer whose enormous output spanned the whole range of late-nineteenth century intellectual culture. Neglected since his death, partly because of the diversity of his interests and the volume of his writing, his cultural centrality and the interdisciplinary nature of his work make him a vital figure for contemporary scholars. This volume covers Lang's wide and influential engagement with the central areas of late nineteenth-century anthropology. Lang made decisive interventions in debates around the meaning of folk tales and the origins of religion, as well as being an important figure in the investigation of spiritualist claims through psychical research. The work reproduced here includes journalism, essays, extracts from books and previously unpublished letters which together articulate and challenge some of the central ideas and discussions of the period, including evolution, the relation between modern and non-modern cultures, the nature of scientific claims to truth, and the consequences of materialism. The volume will provide new and illuminating ways of understanding and assessing the period for scholars across a range of disciplines, including those interested in the histories of the fairy story, of science, of the occult, of colonialism and of anthropology.Key Features: Unpublished archival materialCritical introductions to the major areas of his workFull explanatory notesAndrew Teverson is Professor of English Literature and Associate Dean for the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences at Kingston University, London. His research centres on the use and meaning of fairy tales, and he has published both on the employment of them in contemporary writing and on the historical development of the form. He is the author of Fairy Tale (Routledge, 2013).Alexandra Warwick is Professor of English Studies and Head of the Department of English, Linguistics and Cultural Studies at the University of Westminster. Her research is on Victorian culture, in particular the fin de sicle. Leigh Wilson is Reader in Modern Literature in the Department of English, Linguistics and Cultural Studies at the University of Westminster.
