Book Tudor Despotism

Download or read book Tudor Despotism written by Patricia Emily Ruth Tucker and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Tudor Despotism is a term that was used from the end of the 19th century through the late 1940s to characterize the governance of the Tudor monarchs. Those who argued for the term Tudor Despotism claimed that the Tudor monarchs hap unquestioned authority that was enforced with violence and with blood. The proponents of this view had no trouble in searching the records to find a number of headless victims to support their claims. The heart of this interpretation centers on the Tudor monarchs' relationship with Parliament. Those who claim that there was a Tudor despotism argue that the Tudor kings ignored statutory laws which placed constitutional restraints on the power of the monarch and simply adjusted the law to suit their personal visions of what the law should be; if in fact, these monarchs ever stopped to consider their place within the law. Although this view has been modified by scholars over the years, it was not seriously challenged until the 1950s when Geoffrey Elton published The Tudor Revolution in Government. Elton argued persuasively that the Tudor monarchs, particularly Henry VIII, were essentially constitutionalist "happy in the meeting of Parliament." Elton further presented his case to include Thomas Cromwell, the central figure of government under Henry VIII, as a man who promoted constitutional law; never allowing himself, or his King to overstep the limits placed on them by Parliament. Elton's claim that Henry and Cromwell did nothing that could be construed as unconstitutional was too much for Professor Joel Hurstfield to bear, and he reopened the debate by arguing that Cromwell and Henry VIII were constitutionalists only in practice, not in spirit, and that they worked with Parliament only because the King and his minister could completely control the decisions made there. Hurstfield contended that because the crown could dominate Parliament, there were no practical limits placed on regal power; and the Tudors, particularly Henry VIII, were, therefore, despots." -- From pages 2-3.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of G. R. Elton has inspired its own 'Tudor Revolution' in the historiography of Tudor and Stuart government and society. In this volume a distinguished gathering of eighteen historians, all now resident in North America, pay tribute to Professor Elton's broad influence in shaping modern interpretations of the sixteenth- and seventeenth-century constitution. Each contributor to this volume has addressed, directly or indirectly, some aspect of that tempestuous age which has been dubbed 'Elton's era', and each of the sections relates directly to particular problems or topics which have figured prominently in Professor Elton's own work. Most extend his findings in new directions and with new evidence from archival researches. Others take issue with some of his tentative conclusions, though admitting the extent to which his work has made such advances possible.

Book Richard the Third

Download or read book Richard the Third written by Paul Murray Kendall and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard III (2 October 1452 - 22 August 1485) was King of England from 1483 until his death in 1485 in the Battle of Bosworth Field. He was the last king of the House of York and the last of the Plantagenet dynasty. His defeat at Bosworth Field, the last decisive battle of the Wars of the Roses, marked the end of the Middle Ages in England. He is the subject of the fictional historical play Richard III by William Shakespeare. In 2012, an archaeological excavation was conducted on a city council car park using ground-penetrating radar on the site once occupied by Greyfriars, Leicester. The University of Leicester confirmed on 4 February 2013 that the skeleton found in the excavation is that of Richard III, based on the results of radiocarbon dating, a comparison with contemporary reports of his appearance, and a comparison of his mitochondrial DNA with that of two matrilineal descendants of Richard III's eldest sister, Anne of York.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • For the first time in decades comes a fresh look at the fabled Tudor dynasty, comprising some of the most enigmatic figures ever to rule a country. “A thoroughly readable and often compelling narrative . . . Five centuries have not diminished the appetite for all things Tudor.”—Associated Press In 1485, young Henry Tudor, whose claim to the throne was so weak as to be almost laughable, crossed the English Channel from France at the head of a ragtag little army and took the crown from the family that had ruled England for almost four hundred years. Half a century later his son, Henry VIII, desperate to rid himself of his first wife in order to marry a second, launched a reign of terror aimed at taking powers no previous monarch had even dreamed of possessing. In the process he plunged his kingdom into generations of division and disorder, creating a legacy of blood and betrayal that would blight the lives of his children and the destiny of his country. The boy king Edward VI, a fervent believer in reforming the English church, died before bringing to fruition his dream of a second English Reformation. Mary I, the disgraced daughter of Catherine of Aragon, tried and failed to reestablish the Catholic Church and produce an heir. And finally came Elizabeth I, who devoted her life to creating an image of herself as Gloriana the Virgin Queen but, behind that mask, sacrificed all chance of personal happiness in order to survive. The Tudors weaves together all the sinners and saints, the tragedies and triumphs, the high dreams and dark crimes, that reveal the Tudor era to be, in its enthralling, notorious truth, as momentous and as fascinating as the fictions audiences have come to love. Praise for The Tudors “A rich and vibrant tapestry.”—The Star-Ledger “A thoroughly readable and often compelling narrative . . . Five centuries have not diminished the appetite for all things Tudor.”—Associated Press “Energetic and comprehensive . . . [a] sweeping history of the gloriously infamous Tudor era . . . Unlike the somewhat ponderous British biographies of the Henrys, Elizabeths, and Boleyns that seem to pop up perennially, The Tudors displays flashy, fresh irreverence [and cuts] to the quick of the action.”—Kirkus Reviews “[A] cheeky, nuanced, and authoritative perspective . . . brims with enriching background discussions.”—Publishers Weekly “[A] lively new history.”—Bloomberg
