Book A Baltimore Album

Download or read book A Baltimore Album written by Marsha Radtke and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Marsha D. Radtke discovered a tattered quilt in her rural Maryland parsonage attic, she found local history as well as an old textile. The red and green Baltimore Album quilt not only had an inked date of 1850, it also had inked signatures of women with well-known area family names. It was the superb workmanship that inspired Marsha to re-create the quilt s 24 hand appliqué patterns (one of them repeated in different fabrics) and share this historic treasure with others. These patterns sewn with expert skill before the Civil War have been redrafted for today's quilter with precision, clarity, and easy-to-follow instructions. In addition to being a Baltimore Album pattern teaching guide and resource, the book includes Martha s quilt-as-you-go technique and fail-safe binding method. Marsha began quilting in the 1990s and has won numerous ribbons and awards. Appliqué is her first love, which she enjoys teaching to others. She lives in Crossville, Tennessee, with her husband, Jim.

Book Papercuts and Plenty

Download or read book Papercuts and Plenty written by Elly Sienkiewicz and published by C & T Pub. This book was released on 1995 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current enthusiasm for patchwork should not banish techniques of quilt applique to obscurity, and for Washington, D.C., quilter Sienkiewicz the quilt tops made in Baltimore during the mid-1800s exemplify the classic standards of the applique craft. In a series of 12 lessons, Sienkiewicz describes in meticulous detail the ingenious methods employed a century past by Baltimore women, and others favored by contemporary needleworkers (who use timesaving devices such as freezer paper, glue sticks and masking tape without shame). Each lesson prepares the reader to execute a 16-inch quilt block in one or more of 27 full-size patterns, cut from paper first folded into halves, quarters or eighths. Organized as a text for a single reader or for a class of quilters, the book allows the faithful to advance from cutwork applique to folded rosebuds, stuffed berries, ruching and inked calligraphy. Each block is presented in color, as are four antique and four contemporary quilts. Sienkiewicz's very specific how-to instructions are verified by historical example--and one is always made aware not only of the evolution of the stitches, but also of the feelings that inspired them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An exquisite and authoritative look at four centuries of quilts and quilting from around the world Quilts are among the most utilitarian of art objects, yet the best among them possess a formal beauty that rivals anything made on canvas. This landmark book, drawn from the world-renowned collection of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, highlights the splendor and craft of quilts with more than 300 superb color images and details. Fascinating essays by two noted scholars trace the evolution of quilting styles and trends as they relate to the social, political, and economic issues of their time. The collection includes quilts made by diverse religious and cultural groups over 400 years and across continents, from the Mediterranean, England, France, America, and Polynesia. The earliest quilts were made in India and the Mediterranean for export to the west and date to the late 16th century. Examples from 18th- to 20th-century America, many made by Amish and African-American quilters, reflect the multicultural nature of American society and include boldly colored and patterned worsteds and brilliant pieced and appliquéd works of art. Grand in scope and handsomely produced, Four Centuries of Quilts: The Colonial Williamsburg Collection is sure to be one of the most useful and beloved references on quilts and quilting for years to come.

Download or read book Lisa Yuskavage Wilderness written by and published by Gregory R. Miller. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new focus on the sublime landscapes in Lisa Yuskavage's voluptuous figure paintings Though she is arguably best known for the voluptuous female nudes that populate her paintings, Lisa Yuskavage's work is just as focused on the ethereal settings in which these subjects appear. Yuskavage creates finely detailed landscapes that blur the line between the fantastical and the familiar, melding abstraction with realism to depict self-contained worlds. These outdoor scenes defy conventions of landscape painting with surreal color palettes of lush greens and delicate pinks, cast in a gauzy light quality that highlights the almost magical nature of her paintings. Published in conjunction with a joint exhibition between the Aspen Art Museum in Colorado and the Baltimore Museum of Art in Maryland, this volume includes color reproductions of Yuskavage's paintings and watercolors from the early 1990s to the present, as well as an interview between Yuskavage and fellow artist Mary Weatherford. Based in New York City, American artist Lisa Yuskavage(born 1962) received her MFA from the Yale School of Art in 1986. In the years since, her signature style of figure painting has developed something of a cult following for its attention to art historical tradition and a decidedly contemporary, pop culture-based approach to the representation of the female form. Her work has been in solo exhibitions around the world. Yuskavage is represented by David Zwirner.
