Book excerpt: The Maiden Maverick As a result of Hal’s untimely death, Nancy Perez is living alone in a post Covid-24 world, where the country has lost three-fourths of its population. Basic government services like police, fire, sanitation, and post office are nonexistent—along with electric power and phone service. Coal stoves are used to cook food and heat homes. The Elm Park neighborhood has banded together to obtain food, shelter, and security. Reminiscent of the old west, everyone carries a gun – the ubiquitous 22-caliper handgun. On a nighttime walk to the Kill van Kull, Nancy meets Sam Worthington, a husky black man, with a troubled past. He becomes a guardian – stopping abuses of Darren Trupp’s Brown Shirts who barge into people’s homes – stealing valuables and assaulting women. The Truppers use drones equipped with cameras and lasers to surveille and attack individuals they deem to be rebels. The Resistance is coordinated by Gerald Hopkins from his office in Wolstein’s factory. Hopkins and his aide, Mason, provide Nancy and Sam with guns, bullets, grenades and dynamite to fight the Truppers. There’s a plan by the Truppers to sabotage a coal-powered generating plant – shutting down power to the North Shore. Nancy, Sam, Freddy, Billy, and others engage the Brown Shirts in a gun battle outside the plant – routing them into the swamps of Travis. After the gun battle at the power plant, Sam moves in with Nancy. Soon, an old Army tank appears on Eggert’s Field, the grass-and-flower filled field across the street. A well-aimed grenade takes care of the tank, but a new challenge appears in the form of a refurbished World War Ii destroyer.
Download or read book Maverick s written by Matt Warshaw and published by Chronicle Books. This book was released on 2003-10-09 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its massive faces, punishing rocks, and treacherous currents, Maverick's presents a surfing challenge like no other. Author Matt Warshaw has updated his critically acclaimed illustrated history of Maverick's to cover important recent developments, and we've added a fresh new cover to kick this edition off in style. "A fascinating account," to quote Surfer magazine, it takes "a cue from Sebastian Junger's The Perfect Storm...Warshaw focused on a single event...and expands on it to illuminate an entire culture and its world beyond waves." The event was the death of celebrated surfer Mark Foo, one of those who congregate every winter to test themselves in the dark, foreboding waters. And what unfolds in Maverick's is no less than the story of big-wave surfing, from its ancient Hawaiian origins to modern tow-in riders. It's a book to be enjoyed not only by those who surf deep in the waves, but also by those whose taste for adventure is satisfied deep in the pages of a very good book.

Download or read book Madonnas and Mavericks written by Loretta Chen and published by Marshall Cavendish International Asia Pte Ltd. This book was released on 2017-08-15 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a saying that women hold up half the sky. This cannot be more true than in the Singapore context where women form more than 50% of the workforce. This book is a tribute to the women who have contributed to the growth of Singapore. The women have been selected across varying fields ranging from legal, financial, medical, fashion, sports, arts to even the now ubiquitous “social media”. These women have demonstrated their ability to rise above the ordinary and to push the margins as frontier. Unlike the Forbes’ list that holds a definitive annual audit of the foremost heads of state, CEOS and celebrity role models ranked by money and media momentum, our list of Madonnas and Mavericks are determined by their spheres of influence, dedication and commitment to their craft and industries as well as their somewhat elusive nature. These women may not be always in the limelight but they certainly have contributed to our nation’s growth and success.

Download or read book Mavericks of the Sky written by Barry Rosenberg and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2011-05-03 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was the pilots of the U.S. Air Mail service who made it possible for flight to evolve from an impractical and deadly fad to today's worldwide network of airlines. Nicknamed "The Suicide Club," this small but daring cadre of pilots took a fleet of flimsy World War I "Jenny" Biplanes and blazed a trail of sky routes across the country. In the midst of the Jazz Age, they were dashing, group–proud, brazen, and resentful of authority. They were also loyal, determined to prove the skeptics wrong. MAVERICKS OF THE SKY, by Barry Rosenburg and Catherine Macaulay, is a narrative non–fiction account of the crucial, first three years of the air mail service – beginning with the inaugural New York–to–Washington D.C. flight in 1918, through 1921 when aviator Jack Knight was the first to fly across the country at night and furthermore, through a blizzard. In those early years, one out of every four men lost their lives. With the constant threat of weather and mechanical failure and with little instrumentation available, aviators relied on their wits and instincts to keep them out of trouble. MAVERICKS OF THE SKY brings these sagas to life, and tells the story of the extraordinary lives and rivalries of those who single–handedly pulled off the great experiment.
