Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Maid of Orleans This translation was begun nearly seventeen years ago, but other pursuits interfered to prevent its completion at that time. An accident recently brought to my remembrance my early attempt, of which I had preserved no copy, and I began to write down as much as I could recollect, supplying vacancies as I proceeded. My aim has been merely to give the spirit of the original, and when I thought that this was gained, I took no great pains to make a strictly literal version. I believe, however, that there are few passages in which I have departed very widely from the original, unless in one or two, which I have purposely altered or omitted. I shall be satisfied, if the friends, for whom alone I have printed this volume, derive from its perusal only a small part of the gratification which I have found in its composition. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Life of Joan of Arc: The Maid of Orleans The present volume is not an elaborate essay upon the maid of Orleans, - neither is it a minute history of France from her birth to her death. 'i have, in preparing it, had prlncipal reference to the popular mind. The first thing necessary was to consult closely and carefully all the proper authorities; next, to write a plain history of the life of Joan. With the reliable facts before me, and the tragical story in my heart, i have endeavored to relate it naturally, very likely, in passages, reflecting the language as well as the facts of my authorities. I claim credit only as a compiler. I have in no instance used any but the most reliable authorities; and this little story of one whose name will ever be one of the brightest on the page of his tory, may be relied on as true in every particular. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Maid of Orleans, the Story of Jeanne D'arc for Girls IT was Twelfth Night in Domremy, a little French village. Out of doors the winter wind chilled the peasants who made their way along the narrow streets between the low stone houses. The valley mists from the river Meuse, here a small stream, swept through the hamlet, tangling themselves like silky smoke in the overhanging thatch of the cottages. Yet no one seemed to mind the cold or the fog, for Epiphany is a time for sport and gayety. What did a few shivers matter if you could pull your cap over your ears and beat your chest till it tingled? And was there not plenty of wood in the oak forest - the Bois Chesnu - not far off that would make splen did fires to dance around? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Maid of Orleans: A Romantic Chronicle Warner engaged in the profound researches necessary to v: 'rify the facts contained in the veracious legend of the golden-haired son of Arvon, Owen Tudor, the Editor lighted on some curious particulars relating to the imme diately succeeding times and fortunes of the Maid of Orleans which not being generally known, it was modestly thought, might prove interesting to the world! In fact the singular explanation given of what that varying cosmopolitan was once pleased to consider miraculous in the career of the amazing woman named, is so exclusively contained in the poetical chronicle, in the Editor's sole possession, written by the Minstreless Hueline de Troye, entitled Gestes de la Pucelle d' Orleans, ' that it seemed like an ungenerous concealment of an historical light to withhold it. The Opportunities enjoyed by that lady as a cotemporary of the events delineated, and who being the wife of the favorite minister of Charles VII. The Lord de la Trimouille, may well be supposed to be in the secret of their internal workings, give a value and authenticity to the materials employed in the production of this true chronicle which may be abundantly tested by reference to more accessible historical memoranda. Accordingly, it is here presented to the notice of the benevolent reader; not indeed in the rhymed and poetical form of the original, in conse quence of the great aversion entertained by the present public for that style of composition - but not the less to be relied on as a faithful picture of the times and deeds of the' heroic restorer of the French monarchy. Book Mary Stuart And the Maid of Orleans Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mary Stuart And the Maid of Orleans Classic Reprint written by Friedrich Schiller and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mary Stuart, And, the Maid of Orleans Tn following translation of Man stuart is that by Joseph Mellish, who appears to have been on terms of intimate friendship with Schiller'; and mentions, in his preface, that he was commissioned to introduce this tragedy on the English stage. His version was made from the prompter's copy, before the play was published, and, like Coleridge's Wallenstein, contains many passages not found in the printed edition. These are distinguished by brackets. On the other hand, Mr. Molli sh omitted many passages which form part of the printed drama, all of which have been added. The translation, as a whole, stands out from similar works of the time (1800) in almost as marked a degree as Coleridge' s Wallenstein, and some passages exhibit powers of a high order; a few, however, especially in the earlier scenes, seemed capable of improvement, and these have been revised, but, in deference to the translator, with a sparing hand. Book The Maid of Orleans

Download or read book The Maid of Orleans written by Sven Stolpe and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2014-09-30 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This acclaimed work on the life and mysticism of Joan of Arc is considered by historians as one of the most convincing, well researched and best written accounts of the Maid of Orleans. Stolpe vividly creates the contemporary situation in France during Joan's time, evaluates the latest research on her life, and arrives at an original and authentic portrait - one that is also a work of literature. Stolpe sees Joan of Arc as primarily a mystic, and her supreme achievement and lasting significance not so much in a mission to deliver France - though important - but in her sharing in the Passion of Christ. By shifting the emphasis from the national to the universal, Stolpe brings the saint closer to the modern reader. His scholarship is informed by a profound understanding and sympathy for the Maid, giving his essentially sober work the absorbing interest of a novel. As one critic stated, "Stolpe succeeds in producing a very tense interest, so that it is impossible to lay it aside until the last word is reached." This work should do much to present a new evaluation and appreciation of the life and mysticism of St. Joan of Arc, the Maid of Orleans.
