Book Fisheries Development and Management in India 1785 1986

Download or read book Fisheries Development and Management in India 1785 1986 written by Nune Subba Rao and published by Northern Book Centre. This book was released on 1989 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fisheries play an important role in the economy of nations bordering the sea and this is especially true in a populous country like India where a large majority continues to live below the poverty line. Sea fishing has been an occupation with the coastal people of India since time immemorial forming an integral part of the maritime heritage. Machanisation has been introduced into the marine fishing with a view to exploit the fisheries potential all along the Indian coastline of 6,500 km by overcoming the deficiencies of the centuries old traditional fishing technology and to augment fish production with a higher fishing effort and also to raise the income levels and living standards of fishermen. The present book, based on the author’s doctoral dissertation, made a bold and pioneering attempt to evaluate the costs and earnings of mechanised and traditional boats for determining their relative operational efficiency and to examine intensively the effects of mechanisation on employment, income levels, consumption pattern and levels of living of fishermen and their social implications. While analysing the merits of the new fishing technology and also the reactions of different groups of fishermen to mechanisation, he spotlights the shortsightedness in the implementation of the programme of mechanisation resulting in a host of negative effects which have implications and also sets forth the valuable lessons which Indian experiences have to offer to the densely populated littoral nations in the Third World. To ensure enduring benefits to the vast majority of marine fishermen, the thesis underscores, among numerous other remedies the need for the provision of an intermediary technology, the need for the institutional support and marketing network and the need for the management of fisheries resources. It also calls for the policies to bring about socio-economic development of the fishing community on par with the rest of the society. All in all, a genuine contribution to knowledge of `grassroots' situations that will have enduring value and that can be useful in both academic and policy-formation circles.

This book was released on 2012-11-20 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Set in the heart of Indian bush, Subhan and I is about angling for the hump-backed mahseer, the greatest fresh water fighting fish in the world, under the most harrowing circumstances, in a swim which many experts believe cannot hold big fish whilst others state that even if they were there landing them would be impossible. It is against this challenging backdrop, two men— Subhan and the author—from socially different backgrounds battle hard to outwit and land the elusive mahseer in the turbulent waters of River Cauvery. The book is not just a treasure trove of information on angling and life in the bush, it is also about the life and trials faced by the two men, lost in the madness of trying to save the mahseer against all odds. Of special interest to the readers will be the tips on angling. The many anecdotes related to the author’s family and life experiences lend the book its heart and soul. It also traces the position of the fish in history as it flirts with the Gods of our world. The book is a must-read for not only anglers but also wildlife enthusiasts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE NEVER-BEFORE-TOLD STORY OF HOW THE TROUT CAME TO CALL INDIAN RIVERS ITS HOME. When the East India Company's business venture with India turned into a full-fledged occupation of the country, the British in India, apart from establishing their governance, were concerned with one more thing - how to make their surroundings here more akin to their homeland. Even as they dotted the Indian terrain with their manicured gardens, clock towers and pristine colonial structures, many among them (particularly a clutch of British anglers) increasingly felt the absence of one essential fish in Indian rivers - the trout. A Fish in Alien Streams presents the astounding story of a motley group of mavericks, adventurers and eccentric naturalists who, driven by their peculiar fixation, were obsessed with introducing the trout to India's rivers. This delightful account of an unknown slice of India's colonial past combines incredible research involving antique books, rare documents and letters of wistful longing for the trout with the minutiae of fishing and skilful planning. Spanning the Kashmir valley, Kullu, Uttarkashi, the Nilgiris, Travancore and Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), this unique and incredible tale is about magnificent passions, countless failures and ultimate triumph.

Book Climate Change Small Scale Fisheries and Blue Justice

Download or read book Climate Change Small Scale Fisheries and Blue Justice written by Sunil D. Santha and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-04-14 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a narrative non-fiction, based on the patchy epistemologies of traditional small-scale fishers in India and the Indian Ocean region. It specifically explores the impact of climate change on Fish and Fishers, and the mutual entanglements in their eco-social world. Further, it critically examines the nature of climate change adaptation and its implications on small-scale fisheries. Both climate change impact and adaptation responses are examined from the situated knowledge and everyday lived experiences of Fishers. Stories of their everyday struggles from diverse eco-social worlds shape these patchy epistemologies. Further, this book through these stories unearths the transitions in governance and changing relationships between Fish, Fishers, and the rest of the eco-social world. Responding ethically to the problems of climate change, warming oceans, fish scarcity, overfishing, and pollution requires us to break away from the paradigms that locate Nature and Society as binaries and commodities. Blue justice can be achieved only if strategies aimed at adaptation, conservation and well-being are dialogical, inclusive, and Fish-Fisher centred. This book offers insights into the worldviews of Fishers and their stewardship, wisdom, and experience in healing today’s warming world. Locating the eco-social worlds of Fish and Fishers in alternative worldviews, this book strives to find meaningful pathways for just transitions. It will be of interest to academics and researchers working in the field of climate change, fisheries, disaster studies, and sustainable livelihoods as well as related subjects of social work and social justice.

Book Reservoir Fisheries of India

Download or read book Reservoir Fisheries of India written by V. V. Sugunan and published by Food & Agriculture Org.. This book was released on 1995 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The existing literature on limnology and fisheries of Indian reservoirs has been reviewed by covering more than 100 reservoirs located in various parts of the country. An assessment of environment-mediated production functions of reservoirs has been attempted. Since the ecosystem processes in reservoirs belonging to different geo-climatic regions exhibit wide variations depending on meteorological, morphometric and hydro-edaphic features of the impoundments, an effort has been made to gauge the influence of these abiotic variables on the production dynamics. Authentic information on water areas under different categories of reservoirs has been collected and interpreted in respect of all the Indian States. An attempt has also been made to resolve the anomalies pertaining to classification and nomenclature to the extent possible. Various fisheries management norms followed in the reservoirs of the country including the selection of species for stocking, stocking rate and introduction of exotic species have been reviewed. Indian reservoirs have been stocked with the Indo-Gangetic carps for many decades and the impact of this stocking has been assessed in terms of fish production and the indigenous faunistic diversity.
