Download or read book Homemaking written by Anindya Raychaudhuri and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-10-19 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it possible to think of a counter-hegemonic, progressive nostalgia that celebrates and helps sustain the marginalised? What might such a nostalgia look like, and what political importance might it have? Homemaking: Radical Nostalgia and the Construction of a South Asian Diaspora examines diasporic life in south Asian communities in Europe, North America and Australia, to map the ways in which members of these communities use nostalgia to construct distinctive identities. Using a series of examples from literature, cinema, visual art, music, computer games, mainstream media, physical and virtual spaces and many other cultural objects, this book argues that it is possible, and necessary, to read this nostalgia as helping to create a powerful notion of home that can help to transcend international relations of empire and capital, and create instead a pan-national space of belonging. This homemaking represents the persistent search for somewhere to belong on one’s own terms. Constructed through word, image and music, preserved through dreams and imagination, the home provides sustenance in the continuing struggle to change the present and the future for the better.

Book South Asian Christian Diaspora

Download or read book South Asian Christian Diaspora written by Knut A. Jacobsen and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South Asian Christian diaspora is largely invisible in the literature about religion and migration. This is the first comprehensive study of South Asian Christians living in Europe and North America, presenting the main features of these diasporas, their community histories and their religious practices. The authors present a great variety of Christian traditions. The South Asian Christian Diaspora is pluralistic both in terms of religious adherence, cultural tradition and geographical areas of origin. This book gives justice to this pluralism and presents a multiplicity of cultures and traditions typical of the South Asian Christian diaspora. Issues such as the institutionalization of the religious traditions in new countries, identity, the paradox of belonging both to a minority immigrant group and a majority religion, the social functions of rituals, attitudes to language, generational transfer, and marriage and family life, are all discussed.

James 'Murder most enjoyable' Colin Dexter Anyone for cricket - and a spot of burglary? /font An idle conversation on the merits of the glorious game with an old Etonian chum is just the excuse Blotto needs to put himself forward for a cricket tour to foreign climes... and so begins the next adventure for our intrepid duo, where the action takes them to India where, as everyone knows, the finest cricket players hail from - as well as the world's most skilled jewel thieves... The Dowager Duchess has no problems in letting her two children go to the subcontinent as having her beautiful daughter Twinks married off to a massively rich Maharaja offers the Dowager Duchess the prospect of a permanent solution to the cash-draining maintenance of the Tawcester Towers plumbing. So Twinks joins Blotto on a steamer bound for India, one that is full of young woman desperate to marry well there - only once having encountered the dashing Blotto, a lot of them fancy the idea of getting married before they reach their destination. And, unbeknownst to the siblings, also on the ship is the international jewel thief Archie Montmorency, passing himself off as one of Blotto's cricketing entourage. Download or read book The Quiet Luxe written by Dr Mahul Brahma and published by Blue Rose Publishers. This book was released on 2023-12-02 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Quiet Luxe is an authoritative research-based manual for understanding the history and evolution of “quiet luxury” and includes lectures delivered in the Bath Business School in the United Kingdom. Quiet luxury is a minimalist approach to luxury and fashion that emphasizes timeless elegance, legacy, aesthetics, subliminal ego, and exclusivity. The book explores the uniqueness of luxury brands that are dependent on beauty, art, design and aesthetics. It deep dives into the strategic perspective of leading luxury brands, which cater to both “quiet luxury” and “loud luxury” consumers -- Aesthetes and Connoisseurs versus the Flaunters. The book traces the history of “loud luxury” from the days of the Maharajas to the Great Indian Aspiring Middle Class of today versus the rise of ego-driven “quiet luxury” with the New Maharajas, the Richie Rich, who only flaunt to those who can afford.
