Book excerpt: A CIA agent embedded in the New York City financial community is assigned with his partner to handle the financing of the divestiture of billions of dollars of corporate holdings. The holdings are held by an elderly and wealthy Hong Kong businessman. The agent is curious why so much funding needs to be generated in such a short period of time to fund the flu vaccine and cancer research at Shanghai Genomics. He later discovers that former scientists at Shanghai Genomics have died under mysterious circumstances. Then a close friend working on the divestitures is killed. Thereafter, the agent retrieves a sample of the flu vaccine and the DNA is scanned. Genes produced in the project would make the Chinese a super race. The agent reports his findings to the CIA director, who in turn reports to the president of the United States. The president discusses the matter with the president of China, and a plan is conceived to eliminate the flu vaccine dosages, which are located on a refrigerated ship in international waters. The plan includes the use of two B-2 stealth bombers armed with neutron bombs that would kill the live flu vaccine but not harm the ship. Will the plan be successful? Download or read book Endangered written by Leonard Smith and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2008-03 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's 2050, and Dallas, Texas, is the most stable ground in North America. Following natural disasters, blistering solar radiation, and political policies that ignore citizens' rights, people need and want change and stability. With the appointment of Commandant Vincent Roman Allemande and his second-in-command, Marcia Beaudinot, one-world government will soon be realized. But peace and unity prove elusive. The pair realizes that humans are in more despair than ever as weather, wars, religion, and politics continue to twist and change the human condition. Particularly contentious is the decision to locate armaments on the Mount of Megiddo, which has already witnessed the struggles of Assyrians, Canaanites, Egyptians, Greeks, Israelites, Persians, Philistines, and Romans. Vincent and Marcia become acutely aware that Megiddo is biblically prophesized as the gathering place for Armageddon. Debates and conflicts over the ills that continue to beset society escalate, and many believe the rapture is coming. World leaders must prepare for it. As false religion evolves and emerges, God plans his overthrow of all governments. The intervention has begun. Endangered provides plentiful food for thought regarding the future of our existence in the context of our current political and geophysical climate.

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Transportation written by Mark Garrett and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2014-08-13 with total page 2000 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viewing transportation through the lens of current social, economic, and policy aspects, this four-volume reference work explores the topic of transportation across multiple disciplines within the social sciences and related areas, including geography, public policy, business, and economics. The book’s articles, all written by experts in the field, seek to answer such questions as: What has been the legacy, not just economically but politically and socially as well, of President Eisenhower’s modern interstate highway system in America? With that system and the infrastructure that supports it now in a state of decline and decay, what’s the best path for the future at a time of enormous fiscal constraints? Should California politicians plunge ahead with plans for a high-speed rail that every expert says—despite the allure—will go largely unused and will never pay back the massive investment while at this very moment potholes go unfilled all across the state? What path is best for emerging countries to keep pace with dramatic economic growth for their part? What are the social and financial costs of gridlock in our cities? Features: Approximately 675 signed articles authored by prominent scholars are arranged in A-to-Z fashion and conclude with Further Readings and cross references. A Chronology helps readers put individual events into historical context; a Reader’s Guide organizes entries by broad topical or thematic areas; a detailed index helps users quickly locate entries of most immediate interest; and a Resource Guide provides a list of journals, books, and associations and their websites. While articles were written to avoid jargon as much as possible, a Glossary provides quick definitions of technical terms. To ensure full, well-rounded coverage of the field, the General Editor with expertise in urban planning, public policy, and the environment worked alongside a Consulting Editor with a background in Civil Engineering. The index, Reader’s Guide, and cross references combine for thorough search-and-browse capabilities in the electronic edition. Available in both print and electronic formats, Encyclopedia of Transportation is an ideal reference for libraries and those who want to explore the issues that surround transportation in the United States and around the world.

Book excerpt: SGR 0245+05, a dangerous magnetar within close galactic proximity, shows signs of erupting just as the Earth is in a magnetic reversal and losing its magnetic shield. Professor James Templeton, a brilliant but maligned astrophysicist who alone predicted the eruption of “+05”, is summoned to Washington, DC, by Dr. Jacqueline DeFazio, his former lover and head of NASA’s Space Life Sciences Division, to consult with high-ranking governmental officials about the prospects for a major starquake in “+05”. He tours one of over one hundred American underground mini-cities that were built in the preceding decade based on his scientific predictions and is astounded by the realization that NASA and Dr. DeFazio were following up massively on his predictions of doom, even as they were attacking him in public. The magnetar strikes almost immediately after the high-level briefing and before he and DeFazio can reignite their relationship. Templeton is trapped in DC but manages to return home after a harrowing cross-country trip across a dystopian America in the initial stages of societal collapse. After two hundred years, the restoration of the magnetic shield leads a small number of underground survivors to eventually resurface to a feudal world of warring tribes.
