Download or read book Fundamentals of Cybernetics written by A. Y. Lerner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of science consists not only of deepening and widening the already established scientific disciplines but also depends on the emergence of new ones. The emergence and development of new sciences is influenced primarily by two factors: isolation and generalisation. Isolation of scientific disciplines is due to the discovery of new objects of investigation and the emergence of specific scientific trends. This leads to the study of a relatively narrow class of objects which are characterised by their specific approach to both the formulation and the solution of problems. Examples of this type of specific scientific diSciplines include, for instance, chemistry of high molecular compounds and the theory of electrical machines, which are both devoted to the study of a relatively narrow field. In addition there are the more general scientific disciplines, whose characteristics are that they are created for the purpose of studying such natural phenomena as occur in a very wide class of objects. Disciplines of this type are, for instance, the theory of dimensions and the theory of similarity, the theory of dynamic systems and thermodynamics. The very general, as opposed to the very specific, sciences tend by their nature to be more theoretical and depend much more on the language, mathematical or otherwise, used to describe them.

Book excerpt: Readers of Freeman Dyson’s previous books, Disturbing the Universe, Weapons and Hope, and Infinite in All Directions, have discovered for themselves what Dyson reveals here: that he was a writer long before he became a distinguished scientist. The aim of this new book, as Dyson says, is to open windows, to let the experts inside the temple of science see out, and to let the ordinary citizens outside see in.” In this process an immensely broad range of ideas, people, contemporary history, and discoveries of many sorts pass in review. Beginning with a piece of writing he did as a child and ending with recent work, he goes from Eros, the god or youthful passion, to Gaia, the fertile life-giving mother-planet Earth. The pilgrimage is a good metaphor for the life of a writer. This book is full of discoveries. In the company of one of the most lucid minds of our time, one approaches great men and problems central to our common existence. Always there is warmth, kindness, high intelligence and humor. Dyson is intimate with both science and man. Whether he is dealing with the problems of physics or politics, whether he is engrossed in astronomy or literature, whether he is concentrating on an African village of space science, Dyson’s view is always “infinite in all directions,” always following the path of diversity, always keeping his eye on the wonder of our earth and the health and happiness of its inhabitants.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dazzling.” —Financial Times As lives offline and online merge even more, it is easy to forget how we got here. Rise of the Machines reclaims the spectacular story of cybernetics, one of the twentieth century’s pivotal ideas. Springing from the mind of mathematician Norbert Wiener amid the devastation of World War II, the cybernetic vision underpinned a host of seductive myths about the future of machines. Cybernetics triggered blissful cults and military gizmos, the Whole Earth Catalog and the air force’s foray into virtual space, as well as crypto-anarchists fighting for internet freedom. In Rise of the Machines, Thomas Rid draws on unpublished sources—including interviews with hippies, anarchists, sleuths, and spies—to offer an unparalleled perspective into our anxious embrace of technology.

Book excerpt: Kenneth Schneider's achievement...is to have written a highly intelligent book that is at the same time both stimulating and readable--a rare occurrence. Overall, this is one of the most thought-provoking books that I have read on our modern business-created society and the individual's place within this society. R. Joseph Monsen University of Washington It is a very good book indeed. ...Schneider has managed to choose most of the basic issues confronting our political order: these are the issues people ought to be thinking about. He has also managed to infuse each one with a high ethical content--something quite rare in the ordinary approach to these topics. The result is a serious, informed discussion that often achieves the level of what in olden times was honorably known as 'practical philosophy.'...There is an inarticulate demand for just this sort of thing. Harvey Wheeler Center for the Study of Democratic Institutions The book reflects the author's unusual breadth of interest and reading, and his uncommon ability to synthesize. His topic is significant... He also shows insight into some complex and important problems. I was especially impressed by his reflections on the notion of community. Raymond Baumhart, S. J.
