Book excerpt: We had been talking about the masters who had achieved but a single masterpiece -- the artists and poets who but once in their lives had known the divine afflatus and touched the high level of perfection. Our host had been showing us a charming little cabinet picture by a painter whose name we had never heard, and who, after this single spasmodic bid for fame, had apparently relapsed into obscurity and mediocrity. There was some discussion as to the frequency of this phenomenon; during which, I observed, H------ sat silent, finishing his cigar with a meditative air, and looking at the picture which was being handed round the table. "I don't know how common a case it is," he said at last, "but I have seen it. I have known a poor fellow who painted his one masterpiece, and" -- he added with a smile -- "he didn't even paint that. He made his bid for fame and missed it." We all knew H------ for a clever man who had seen much of men and manners, and had a great stock of reminiscences. Someone immediately questioned him further, and while I was engrossed with the raptures of my neighbor over the little picture, he was induced to tell his tale. If I were to doubt whether it would bear repeating, I should only have to remember how that charming woman, our hostess, who had left the table, ventured back in rustling rose-color to pronounce our lingering a want of gallantry, and, finding us a listening circle, sank into her chair in spite of our cigars, and heard the story out so graciously that, when the catastrophe was reached, she glanced across at me and showed me a tear in each of her beautiful eyes. Book excerpt: American author Henry James often grappled with weighty topics in his work, and the story "The Madonna of the Future" -- longer than a typical short story, but shorter than a novella -- is no exception. Framed as an anecdote related among a group of men engaged in post-dinner chitchat, the story deals with an artist whose outsize ambitions and perfectionism have frozen him in a kind of creative paralysis. It's a profoundly thought-provoking tale that prompts important questions about the role of art in the world.

James wrote a number of stories about art, artists, their achievements, and their reputations - both whilst alive and after their death. The Madonna of the Future is about a would be artist. Theobald has an enormous reverence for the world of Art, and Italian Renaissance painters in particular. He is well informed about the history and the technical details of what they have produced. He takes what we would now call a high romantic view of art - that an appreciation of its values offers entrance into a quasi-religious and transcendental realm which can sustain the individual even whilst they might live in reduced circumstances or even poverty.

Book excerpt: A city of myth and masterpieces, Florence, Italy, has been drawing travelers to its streets for hundreds of years. It's there we find Theobald, a passionate and ready speaker with the poor-bohemian aura of a great artist. Theobald was known to all of expatriate Florence, but more for his great soliloquies than his great works. Like many before him and many after, Theobald had come to Italy from America to be an artist, and he dreamed obsessively of creating his own great masterpiece, a Madonna. But, the city proves as likely to consume him as to inspire him as, surrounded by the great works of Cellini, Raphael, and Michelangelo, Theobald's resolve, his talent, and even his very self, seem to dissolve. Henry James wrote dozens of works--fiction and nonfiction--on art and artists. This early story remains one of his most endearing and is a great introduction both to James's work, and to the late-nineteenth century art world and art fiction. This electronic edition of James's classic text has been newly set, carefully edited, and fully optimized for e-book reading. As a bonus, it includes a mini, illustrated and annotated tour map of the Florence Henry James knew and loved.

Book Portraying the Lady

Download or read book Portraying the Lady written by Donatella Izzo and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2001-01-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Daisy Miller to Isabel Archer to Maisie, female characters dominate the work of Henry James and, often, critical discussion of James's work. Donatella Izzo shifts that discussion to a different, more revealing, plane in this original interpretation of James's short fiction. By redirecting criticism from a biographical emphasis to a focus on James's engagement with the issues of representation, Izzo shows how these short stories actually question and investigate the cultural and ideological practices that produced women, both in literature and in society.øPortraying the Lady brings to light the experimental quality and inherent consistency of stories that have received little critical attention, all of which revolve around ideas at the core of the cultural representation of femininity at the time. Izzo shows how James, by testing and stretching these ideas in his imagery and plots, exposed and exploded the perverse logic and the ultimate implications of such culturally shared versions of femininity, thus revealing their oppressive quality for women and laying bare literature's complicity in reproducing and circulating them. Exposing James's texts as sensitive registers of women's roles during the Victorian-Edwardian era, this book demonstrates that his texts make readers aware of how those stereotypes operated.øBlending literary, art, and feminist criticism with narratological analysis and postmodern theory, this groundbreaking work restores a formal awareness to James studies within the wider theoretical concerns of feminist, gender, and cultural critiques.
