Book excerpt: The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is the leading mode of tropical intraseasonal variability and has known links to modification of extratropical patterns. Spatial and temporal scale differences between the MJO and US tornadoes makes connecting the two difficult, but using tornado outbreaks (TO) that are typically synoptically evident helps close this gap. An assessment of TO probability was conducted for each of the eight Realtime Multivariate MJO index phases for each month. In addition, clusters of TOs were used to identify how the MJO’s extratropical response influences patterns that lead to outbreaks in the US. It was found, and in part, consistent with previous research, that the shifts in the jet stream and wave breaking over the Pacific that occur in response to the current location of the MJO convection and circulation anomalies contribute to changes in the mid-latitude flow that can produce TOs in the central and eastern US.

Over the past decade, the ability to forecast weather and climate conditions on subseasonal to seasonal (S2S) timescales, i.e., two to fifty-two weeks in advance, has improved substantially. Although significant progress has been made, much work remains to make S2S predictions skillful enough, as well as optimally tailored and communicated, to enable widespread use. Next Generation Earth System Predictions presents a ten-year U.S. research agenda that increases the nation's S2S research and modeling capability, advances S2S forecasting, and aids in decision making at medium and extended lead times.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: In the U.S.A., tornado outbreaks contribute to hundreds of fatalities and cause considerable physical and monetary damages annually. Historically, tornadoes, and particularly tornado outbreaks, have been poorly understood in terms of physical processes and spatiotemporal variability. One source of this uncertainty is the lack of an objective definition of "tornado outbreak." The aims of this study were to examine the spatiotemporal variability in historic U's. tornado outbreaks using different definitions of the term "tornado outbreak." The potential associations between outbreak variability and eastern tropical Pacific SST variability were also investigated. We find that over the period 1975-2014, "Tornado Outbreak Alley" is centered in northern Alabama. Additionally, outbreak activity exhibited increasing trends with time for Winter, Spring, and Fall according to four of five outbreak records. State-level linkages to winter ENSO influences, focused generally in the Southeast, may indicate the tropical Pacific as a forcing factor in U's. outbreak variability. We demonstrate both the contrasts in outbreak records that result from different definitions of outbreak, and that outbreak activity appears to be increasing, regardless of definition.

Book excerpt: North America has the most tornado outbreaks in the world each year, especially in the Mid-west of the United States in the region between the Rocky Mountains and the Appalachian Mountains, known as "Tornado Alley." Tornado alley is not a confined area, but subjective to researchers with justified reasons. This thesis examined five hypotheses. Hypothesis One examined that the spatial area of Tornado Alley is expanding. Hypothesis Two and Three identified the frequency and intensity of tornadoes from 1960 to 2012 in the United States. Hypothesis Four and Five examined the relationship in temperature and precipitation in the United States to the frequency of tornadoes from 1960 to 2012. The research observed the spatial area of Tornado Alley has expanded from 1960 to 2011 eastward in the United States. Maps and charts of tornado outbreaks in the United States illustrated where tornadoes occurred and any trends and relationships that were observed. The frequency of tornadoes increased each decade from 1960s to 2000s from 6,940 to 12,974 tornado occurrences. As tornadoes became more frequent, they did not become more intense. There are weaker EF0 and EF1 tornadoes than EF4 and EF5 tornadoes. The research observed how global warming has affected tornado frequency in the United States by observing the relationship between average annual temperature and average annual precipitation change. Average annual temperatures in the United States have increased by 3.86°F from the 1960s to 2010s and the average annual precipitations in the United States have increased by 0.44 inches from the 1960s to the 2010s. As the frequency of tornadoes increased, and the average annual temperature and average annual precipitation increased, a relationship was observed.

Book excerpt: This open access book discusses the impact of human-induced global climate change on the regional climate and monsoons of the Indian subcontinent, adjoining Indian Ocean and the Himalayas. It documents the regional climate change projections based on the climate models used in the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) and climate change modeling studies using the IITM Earth System Model (ESM) and CORDEX South Asia datasets. The IPCC assessment reports, published every 6–7 years, constitute important reference materials for major policy decisions on climate change, adaptation, and mitigation. While the IPCC assessment reports largely provide a global perspective on climate change, the focus on regional climate change aspects is considerably limited. The effects of climate change over the Indian subcontinent involve complex physical processes on different space and time scales, especially given that the mean climate of this region is generally shaped by the Indian monsoon and the unique high-elevation geographical features such as the Himalayas, the Western Ghats, the Tibetan Plateau and the adjoining Indian Ocean, Arabian Sea, and Bay of Bengal.
