Book Mad for Speed

Download or read book Mad for Speed written by Elsa A. Nystrom and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2013-06-06 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers Joan Newton Cuneo's life, and her roles (from 1905 to 1915) as the premier female racer in the United States and spokeswoman for women drivers and good roads. Beginning with her family history and marriage to Andrew Cuneo, it traces her life in New York society, the birth of her children, and Joan's growing interest in automobile touring and racing and partnership with Louis Disbrow, her racing mechanic. The book covers Joan's experiences in three Glidden Tours, including her notes on the 1907 tour, her first races, and her rivals. It also looks at the growth and change of automobile culture and the battles for control of racing among the American Automobile Association, the Automobile Club of America, and the American Automobile Manufacturers Association--which ended in banishing women racers shortly after Joan's greatest racing victories at New Orleans (in 1909). The book then follows Joan's attempts to continue racing, the end of her marriage, her move to the Upper Peninsula, and her remarriage and death. The book also includes a chapter on her female rivals in racing and touring.

Book excerpt: Since she was a young child, the beautiful Laura Halsey has wanted two things in life: to raise a family and to drive a truck like her father. Her father insists, “Women don’t drive trucks,” but she’s determined to prove him wrong — until he dies in a terrible accident when she’s only a teenager. A week after her divorce is finalized, Laura, now 43, leaves her office job and enlists her brother Mark to help her fulfill her dream of becoming a truck driver. Facing harassment, demanding customers, a grueling schedule, careless drivers, and her own fears, Laura struggles to succeed in an industry vastly different from the one her father knew. But driving isn’t without its rewards — including the chance of finding love again in the form of fellow driver Bill Johnson, a smart, handsome widower. Both are drawn into a relationship involving a common problem: loving someone who can be miles away for long periods of time in a high-risk job.

Book Your Personality Drives You

Download or read book Your Personality Drives You written by Dan Jankowski and published by Dan Jankowski. This book was released on 2011-02-21 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We do it virtually every day. For the typical American, it is as natural as breathing and eating. We refer, of course, to driving. Yet, we may wonder what influences us to behave the way we do when we get into a hundred cubic foot compartment mounted on a steel chassis. Why do we act the way we do when getting behind the wheel? Driving is telling! Your Personality Drives You is not simply about road rage. Rather, it is a unique approach to recognizing the true personality that predictably drives us while behind the wheel. In the researched pages of his book, Dr. Jankowski introduces us to ourselves by identifying eight personality patterns and relating them to our own distinct driving styles. The data for Your Personality Drives You is derived from more than four hundred independent surveys compiled across all age groups. Its ten chapters focus on eight personality styles in defining and unmasking our driving behavior. People are normally drawn to self-help books for discovery. This book will hopefully provide that "aha" moment by identifying the personality style that drives you on the road. The stage is set, and you are invited to come along for the ride. Discover within the following chapters how "your personality drives you."

Book Anglophone Cameroon Literature

Download or read book Anglophone Cameroon Literature written by Emmanuel Fru Doh and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2014-10-28 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Against a disturbing political backdrop and through an in-depth appraisal of selected illustrative texts from major genres—poetry, prose, and drama—Emmanuel Fru Doh presents the origins and growth of a young but potent literature. To him, Anglophone-Cameroon literature is a weapon in the hands of an oppressed English speaking minority in his native Cameroon, Africa, who were unfairly manipulated by the United Nations and Britain into a skewed federation in the name of an independence deal.

Book Pacific Automobilism

Download or read book Pacific Automobilism written by Gijs Mom and published by Berghahn Books. This book was released on 2022-09-13 with total page 1002 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beginning of the 21st century has seen important shifts in mobility cultures around the world, as the West’s media-driven car culture has contrasted with existing local mobilities, from rickshaws in India and minibuses in Africa to cycling in China. In this expansive volume, historian Gijs Mom explores how contemporary mobility has been impacted by social, political, and economic forces on a global scale, as in light of local mobility cultures, the car as an ‘adventure machine’ seems to lose cultural influence in favor of the car’s status character.
