Book The Book of the Garden Vol 2 of 2

Download or read book The Book of the Garden Vol 2 of 2 written by Charles Mcintosh and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 878 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Garden, Vol. 2 of 2: Cultural Works on Practical Gardening have, for the most part, been arranged in the calender form, no doubt with a View to render them, in the estimation of their authors, more convenient for reference. There are, however, objections to this mode of arrangement, which we think may be avoided by adopting the sectional or separate garden division, as the operations in any of these departments may be carried on irrespective of the others - a mode of culture which is, in fact, practised in our largest and best-managed establishments, in all of which the subdivision of labour is found to be admirably adapted for facilitating the multifarious operations of the whole. Besides, some people have a predilection for one of these departments more than for another, and many are content with one of them only. We had hoped that a seasonal arrangement might have been adopted, and that it would have combined all the advantages of the calender form, and have avoided its principal defects. The attempt to carry out this scheme has, however, shown us that it inevitably involved a want of connection and a degree of confusion, which could not be otherwise than most embarrassing to the reader, While it necessitated an amount of repetition which would have made it impossible to comprise the cultural department of the garden in a single volume, Without sacrificing that minuteness of detail which is essential to the highest value of such a work. Book The Lure of the Beach

Download or read book The Lure of the Beach written by Robert C. Ritchie and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-04-25 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A human and global take on a beloved vacation spot. The crash of surf, smell of salted air, wet whorls of sand underfoot. These are the sensations of the beach, that environment that has drawn humans to its life-sustaining shores for millennia. And while the gull’s cry and the cove’s splendor have remained constant throughout time, our relationship with the beach has been as fluid as the runnels left behind by the tide’s turning. The Lure of the Beach is a chronicle of humanity's history with the coast, taking us from the seaside pleasure palaces of Roman elites and the aquatic rituals of medieval pilgrims, to the venues of modern resort towns and beyond. Robert C. Ritchie traces the contours of the material and social economies of the beach throughout time, covering changes in the social status of beach goers, the technology of transport, and the development of fashion (from nudity to Victorianism and back again), as well as the geographic spread of modern beach-going from England to France, across the Mediterranean, and from nineteenth-century America to the world. And as climate change and rising sea levels erode the familiar faces of our coasts, we are poised for a contemporary reckoning with our relationship—and responsibilities—to our beaches and their ecosystems. The Lure of the Beach demonstrates that whether as a commodified pastoral destination, a site of ecological resplendency, or a flashpoint between private ownership and public access, the history of the beach is a human one that deserves to be told now more than ever before.

Book The Lure of the Flame Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Lure of the Flame Classic Reprint written by Mark Danger and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-13 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lure of the Flame I had just begun a new story for one of our prominent newspapers, when a well-known doctor was announced. When I say that he is well known I do not mean that he is an idol of Mayfair or a much sought-after consultant, though I have no doubt that he could have been either, for he has brains, appearance and sufficient means of his own. But for some reason or other he has elected to devote himself entirely to those who require the services of the Healer, in its twofold sense - the Outcasts of Society, the gutter dwellers of this vast City. "I know you're keen on the White Slave Traffic," he began. "I was," I corrected. "But now the Bill is passed my keenness has lost its point. Even the papers have dropped the subject which they no doubt consider stale." "Mark Danger," he reproved, shaking his fine head, "with your name and your intelligence I expected better things of you! Both the papers and the public are wrong. They go hammer and tongs at a thing, encourage the grossest exaggeration regarding it and work it to death until one step towards their goal is made, like the passing of this Bill - and then they drop it like a useless bauble. In other words, they forsake the fight. Having gained one Victory they think the battle won. But is it? Those they have been denouncing know quite well that it is not. That, if they lie low for a time, their chance will come again. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
