Book American Sports and the Great War

Download or read book American Sports and the Great War written by Peter C. Stewart and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-02-26 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on newspaper accounts, college yearbooks and the recollections of veterans, this book examines the impact of World War I on sports in the U.S. As young men entered the military in large numbers, many colleges initially considered suspending athletics but soon turned to the idea of using sports to build morale and physical readiness. Recruits, mostly in their twenties, ended up playing more baseball and football than they would have in peacetime. Though most college athletes volunteered for military duty, others replaced them so that the reduction of competition was not severe. Pugilism gained participants as several million men learned how to box.

Book U S Navy Codebreakers Linguists and Intelligence Officers against Japan 1910 1941

Download or read book U S Navy Codebreakers Linguists and Intelligence Officers against Japan 1910 1941 written by Steven E. Maffeo and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2015-12-16 with total page 575 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique reference presents 59 biographies of people who were key to the sea services being reasonably prepared to fight the Japanese Empire when the Second World War broke out, and whose advanced work proved crucial. These intelligence pioneers invented techniques, procedures, and equipment from scratch, not only allowing the United States to hold its own in the Pacific despite the loss of most of its Fleet at Pearl Harbor, but also laying the foundation of today’s intelligence methods and agencies. One-hundred years ago, in what was clearly an unsophisticated pre-information era, naval intelligence (and foreign intelligence in general) existed in rudimentary forms almost incomprehensible to us today. Founded in 1882, the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence (ONI)—the modern world’s “oldest continuously operating intelligence agency”—functioned for at least its first forty years with low manning, small budgets, low priority, and no prestige. The navy’s early steps into communications intelligence (COMINT), which included activities such as radio interception, radio traffic analysis, and cryptology, came with the 1916 establishment of the Code and Signals Section within the navy’s Division of Communications and with the 1924 creation of the “Research Desk” as part of the Section. Like ONI, this COMINT organization suffered from low budgets, manning, priority, and prestige. The dictionary focuses on these pioneers, many of whom went on, even after World War II, to important positions in the Navy, the State Department, the Armed Forces Security Agency, the National Security Agency, and the Central Intelligence Agency. It reveals the work and innovations of well and lesser-known individuals who created the foundations of today’s intelligence apparatus and analysis.

Book America s First Aircraft Carrier

Download or read book America s First Aircraft Carrier written by David F Winkler and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2024-02-15 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America’s First Aircraft Carrier tells the remarkable story of the USS Langley. The narrative provides an in-depth discussion of the ship’s origins as the collier USS Jupiter, which was built with a “first of” propulsion system that has been adapted for use in present-day Ford-class carriers. Author David F. Winkler considers the post–World War I debate for procuring carriers, the decision to convert Jupiter, and the identification of constructor Clayton Simmers as the father of the American aircraft carrier. The evolution of the Langley as an experimental ship was tied to the introduction of new doctrine for the United States. Promoting an independent naval air arm against Brig. Gen. Billy Mitchell’s vision of an independent air force, the U.S. Navy saw Langley as an operational aircraft carrier that would change the way the Navy fought wars at sea. While the story of Langley is that of the origins of naval air combat, it is also a record of the vessel’s service in World War II until the ship’s final posting to the Asiatic Fleet, where she met her demise on February 27, 1942, off the southern coast of Java. Many of the U.S. Navy’s pioneering naval aviators are closely associated with this ship, including Kenneth Whiting, John H. Towers, Godfrey DeCourcelles Chevalier, Virgil C. Griffith, Mel Pride, Patrick N. L. Bellinger, Joseph M. Reeves, Gerald Bogan, Aubrey Fitch, Felix Stump, Ernest J. King, Warren G. Child, Dan Gallery, and Frank D. Wagner. A number of these individuals would go on to play critical roles during World War II. Langley’s story is their story. Aircraft carriers remain the centerpiece of American sea power projection. America’s First Aircraft Carrier provides the context on how CV 1, the “Covered Wagon,” and carrier development and utilization came to be.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lucky Bag, 1910, Vol. 17 In the meantime the rest of the class were entering and being quartered in Bancroft Hall, spending their days wrestling with the manual or the drag-ropes of a three-inch field piece, under the watchful eye of the savvy section of the first class, who, instead of going on their regular cruise, had been kept in Annapolis to graduate in September. This was nice for the first class, but it cut us out of our share of any real plebe summer, and we deeply felt the loss. It was while the second bunch was still incomplete that we had our first acquaintance is a class with sorrow. Kennedy Benham Kilduff, though he had hardly been a member of us for a week, had already won the liking and admiration of every man who came in contact with him and his death cast a gloom over every one. Two weeks later the Standish brought Kin jiro Matsukata, who had been making the cruise on the Severn, back to the hospital for treat ment. He was operated on immediately, but it was unavailing and the plucky little fellow passed away with a smile on his lips, a stranger in a strange land. These two sad events in so short a time served to Show us that we were a class and could feel and act as such, in spite of our extreme. Youth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this memoir spanning nine decades, Lieutenant Colonel C.F. Jerram (1882-1969) of the Royal Marines recounts his life and military service through both world wars. Jerram describes in candid detail his late 19th-century childhood in Devon and Cornwall, the late Victorian and Edwardian Royal Navy, the Royal Navy's Far East Station, a traditional Corps of Marines, the Gallipoli Campaign, the World War I Western Front and the interwar and World War II years. His experience and insight convey two fundamental lessons: "Know thy profession and look after those for whom you are responsible." An essay by the editor, based on other sources, provides a broader perspective on Jerram, whose approach to professional military service is still pertinent today.
