Book The Loyalist Experience and Aftermath in Revolutionary Philadelphia

Download or read book The Loyalist Experience and Aftermath in Revolutionary Philadelphia written by Kimberly Nath and published by Brookline Books. This book was released on 2024-08-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New narratives on the lived experience of the Revolutionary War through five case studies exploring the spectrum of loyalist experiences in Revolutionary Philadelphia. The city of Philadelphia was occupied for nine months by the British during the American Revolution, and had a large loyalist population. The newly independent Pennsylvania legislature passed a series of laws early in the revolution which identified, condemned, and confiscated all property from loyalists in the state. Each loyalist, however, experienced different fates and persecution under the law and in the community. For example, some loyalists fled the city of Philadelphia and never returned, such as the Rankin and Allen families. They left their houses, material possessions and lives behind to start over in the British Empire. Loyalist Matthias Aspden lost everything and spent twenty years following the revolution attempting to return to his beloved city of Philadelphia, but he never succeeded. Others, like Samuel and Rebecca Shoemaker, attempted to subvert the law, maintain ownership of their property by way of their daughters, and did in fact reintegrate at the conclusion of the war. The Fergusons represent another story where Elizabeth Graeme Ferguson seized her husband's absence as a moment for independence and sought sole ownership of their property. Through five stories and chapters, the richness of the loyalist experience in Philadelphia will be revealed, adding new narratives to the history of the American Revolution.

Book Anville

    Book Details:
  • Author : Norma Welch
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN : 9781930052345
  • Pages : 497 pages

Download or read book Anville written by Norma Welch and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anville is an historical novel about the American Revolutionary War. The struggles between the Tories (Loyal to England) and the Whigs (supporters of the Revolution) causes conflict between neighbors in Southern Delaware. In Anville, American patriot Caesar Rodney and the Kent County militia confront loyalist Thomas Robinson and his men of Sussex County, who rise in armed revolt for King George III, King of England. Thomas Alysen and "Whis" Yates, with common grandchildren, are neighbors on different sides of the fence in the war. The innkeeper's wife puts barmaid Eliza Streman in the pillory for blasphemy. Zach Stydham tars and feathers Springer Yates for his assault on Eliza. Penny Stydham and Jessica Thomas face each other at the Rectory after the latter's trysts with Zach. The independence-minded Whigs and Tories, with Tories being loyal to England, forces many to take sides in the war, and those who don't want to. Yet, all is not violence and confrontation as most Delawareans, both real-life people and fictional characters, live through and thrive during the early traumatic years of the American Revolution.
