Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lower Amazon: A Narrative of Explorations in the Little Known Regions Within recent years the attention of Americans of the United States has turned to South America, and been discovered that the possibilities there are immense. Development has been going on, and to-day the second city of the Western Hemisphere, and one of the finest cities of the world, is the capital of Argentina: Buenos Aires. But the largest country of South America, Brazil, has been hardly developed at all, and it is a vast country with limitless possibilities. It has an area greater than that of the United States by some 250,000 square miles, while its population, of which a large proportion is negro and Indian, amounts to only about 22,000,000. The monarch of all rivers, the Amazon, is comprised almost entirely in Brazil even to its numerous headwaters. The trunk river is a huge inland reservoir, rising and falling because of the enormous flood-waters poured into it, and periodically inundating the forest to such an extent that there is no shore line apparent - nothing but water spreading amidst the tree trunks. The really salubrious part of the country lies south of about 8 south latitude, and along the coast. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The amazing tale of one of history's most daring acts of biopiracy-and how it changed history In this thrilling real-life account of bravery, greed, obsession, and ultimate betrayal, award- winning writer Joe Jackson brings to life the story of fortune hunter Henry Wickham and his collaboration with the empire that fueled, then abandoned him. In 1876, Wickham smuggled 70,000 rubber tree seeds out of the rainforests of Brazil and delivered them to Victorian England's most prestigious scientists at Kew Gardens. The story of how Wickham got his hands on those seeds-and the history-making consequences-is the stuff of legend. The Thief at the End of the World is an exciting true story of reckless courage and ambition that perfectly captures the essential nature of Great Britain's colonial adventure in South America.

This book was released on 2023-05-30 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Rohter’s crisp biography is a welcome addition to the new, more inclusive canon.” —Rachel Slade, New York Times Book Review A thrilling biography of the Indigenous Brazilian explorer, scientist, stateseman, and conservationist who guided Theodore Roosevelt on his journey down the River of Doubt. Cândido Rondon is by any measure the greatest tropical explorer in history. Between 1890 and 1930, he navigated scores of previously unmapped rivers, traversed untrodden mountain ranges, and hacked his way through jungles so inhospitable that even native peoples had avoided them—and led Theodore Roosevelt and his son, Kermit, on their celebrated “River of Doubt” journey in 1913–14. Upon leaving the Brazilian Army in 1930 with the rank of a two-star general, Rondon, himself of indigenous descent, devoted the remainder of his life to not only writing about the region’s flora and fauna, but also advocating for the peoples who inhabited the rainforest and lobbying for the creation of a system of national parks. Despite his many achievements—which include laying down a 1,200-mile telegraph line through the heart of the Amazon and three nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize—Rondon has never received his due. Originally published in Brazil, Into the Amazon is the first comprehensive biography of his life and remarkable career.
