Book The Letters of Charles Dickens Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book The Letters of Charles Dickens Vol 1 of 2 written by Charles Dickens and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Letters of Charles Dickens, Vol. 1 of 2: Edited by His Sister-in-Law and His Eldest Daughter We find some difficulty in being quite accurate in the arrangements of letters up to the end of 1839, for he had a careless habit in those days about dating his letters, very frequently putting only the day of the week on which he wrote, curiously in contrast with the habit of his later life, when his dates were always of the very fullest. A blank is made in Charles Dickens's correspondence with his family by the absence of any letter addressed to his daughter Kate (mrs. Perugini), to her great regret and to ours. In 1873, her furniture and other possessions were stored in the warehouse of the Pantechnicon at the time of the great fire there. All her. Property was destroyed, and, among other things, a box of papers which included her letters from her father. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Love-Letters of the King: Or the Life Romantic Late one spring afternoon, quite recently, a hansom, almost intolerably radiant with happiness - so it seemed to other hansoms going east - was driving through St. James's Park in the direction of Buckingham Palace. It contained two people, a man and a woman, not too young and not too old, and it was from them that the effulgence proceeded. "Let us make life wonderful for each other," the man was saying. "You have already made it wonderful for me," the woman answered. Thus they completed the second hour of their acquaintance. They were in all the exaltation of first love experienced for the twentieth time. Sudden love had come upon them while they were drinking tea at Mrs. Lanyon's that very afternoon. Book The Dickens Kolle Letters Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Dickens Kolle Letters Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Charles Dickens and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dickens-Kolle Letters, Vol. 1 It will be remembered that Kolle, in addition to looking after his own interests in wooing a fair member of the Beadnell household, served young Dickens in the capacity of messenger in smuggling his imploring love missives through the parental barriers and into the hands of the coquettish Maria, after Dickens had been debarred from the Beadnell home, and even from communicating with Miss Beadnell through the mail. Nothing could better illustrate the corroborative character of these letters than the quotation appearing on pages 13-15. Matters of an intimately personal nature which disclose important facts and give a clearer insight into the lives and characters of those who are near and dear to us are always interesting. Perhaps no author excels Dickens in the ever-increasing number of admirers he has made among the lovers of literature; and facts, therefore, which relate to and explain the all-absorbing event of his life, and which, according to his own confession to Mrs. Winter, were the inceptive cause of his famous career, cannot fail to be of interest. Book excerpt: In Machiavelliana Michael Jackson and Damian Grace offer a comprehensive study of the uses and abuses of Niccolò Machiavelli’s name in society generally and in academic fields distant from his intellectual origins. It assesses the appropriation of Machiavelli in didactic works in management, social psychology, and primatology, scholarly texts in leaderships studies, as well as novels, plays, commercial enterprises, television dramas, operas, rap music, Mach IV scales, children’s books, and more. The book audits, surveys, examines, and evaluates this Machiavelliana against wider claims about Machiavelli. It explains the origins of Machiavelli’s reputation and the spread of his fame as the foundation for the many uses and misuses of his name. They conclude by redressing the most persistent distortions of Machiavelli.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prince Bismarck's greatness as a statesman and his imperishable services to Prussia and Germany are historical facts of such tremendous significance that there is doubtless no man in existence, whatever his party affiliations, who would dare to place them in question. For this very reason alone it is stupid to accuse me of not having recognized the greatness of Prince Bismarck. The opposite is the truth. I revered and idolized him. Nor could it be otherwise. It should be borne in mind with what generation I grew up—the generation of the devotees of Bismarck. He was the creator of the German Empire, the paladin of my grandfather, and all of us considered him the greatest statesman of his day and were proud that he was a German. Bismarck was the idol in my temple, whom I worshiped. But monarchs also are human beings of flesh and blood, hence they, too, are exposed to the influences emanating from the conduct of others; therefore, looking at the matter from a human point of view, one will understand how Prince Bismarck, by his fight against me, himself destroyed, with heavy blows, the idol of which I have spoken. But my reverence for Bismarck, the great statesman, remained unaltered. While I was still Prince of Prussia I often thought to myself: "I hope that the great Chancellor will live for many years yet, since I should be safe if I could govern with him." But my reverence for the great statesman was not such as to make me take upon my own shoulders, when I became Emperor, political plans or actions of the Prince which I considered mistakes. Even the Congress of Berlin in 1878 was, to my way of thinking, a mistake, likewise the "Kulturkampf." Moreover, the constitution of the Empire was drawn up so as to fit in with Bismarck's extraordinary preponderance as a statesman; the big cuirassier boots did not fit every man. Then came the labor-protective legislation. I most deeply deplored the dispute which grew out of this, but, at that time, it was necessary for me to take the road to compromise, which has generally been my road both on domestic and foreign politics. For this reason I could not wage the open warfare against the Social Democrats which the Prince desired. Nevertheless, this quarrel about political measures cannot lessen my admiration for the greatness of Bismarck as a statesman; he remains the creator of the German Empire, and surely no one man need have done more for his country than that. Owing to the fact that the great matter of unifying the Empire was always before my eyes, I did not allow myself to be influenced by the agitations which were the commonplaces of those days. In like manner, the fact that Bismarck was called the majordomo of the Hohenzollerns could not shake my trust in the Prince, although he, perhaps, had thoughts of a political tradition for his family. As evidence of this, he felt unhappy, for instance, that his son Bill felt no interest in politics and wished to pass on his power to Herbert.

Book excerpt: Madman, tyrant, animal—history has given Adolf Hitler many names. In Mein Kampf (My Struggle), often called the Nazi bible, Hitler describes his life, frustrations, ideals, and dreams. Born to an impoverished couple in a small town in Austria, the young Adolf grew up with the fervent desire to become a painter. The death of his parents and outright rejection from art schools in Vienna forced him into underpaid work as a laborer. During the First World War, Hitler served in the infantry and was decorated for bravery. After the war, he became actively involved with socialist political groups and quickly rose to power, establishing himself as Chairman of the National Socialist German Worker's party. In 1924, Hitler led a coalition of nationalist groups in a bid to overthrow the Bavarian government in Munich. The infamous Munich "Beer-hall putsch" was unsuccessful, and Hitler was arrested. During the nine months he was in prison, an embittered and frustrated Hitler dictated a personal manifesto to his loyal follower Rudolph Hess. He vented his sentiments against communism and the Jewish people in this document, which was to become Mein Kampf, the controversial book that is seen as the blue-print for Hitler's political and military campaign. In Mein Kampf, Hitler describes his strategy for rebuilding Germany and conquering Europe. It is a glimpse into the mind of a man who destabilized world peace and pursued the genocide now known as the Holocaust.
