Book Vincent van Gogh The Lost Arles Sketchbook

Download or read book Vincent van Gogh The Lost Arles Sketchbook written by Abrams and published by Harry N. Abrams. This book was released on 2016-11-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The most revolutionary discovery in the entire history of Van Gogh's oeuvre. Not one drawing; not ten, not fifty, but sixty-five drawings." --Ronald Pickvance, from the Foreword Late in life, during his time living in Provence, Vincent van Gogh kept a sketchbook within a humble account ledger given to him by Joseph and Marie Ginoux, the owners of the Café de la Gare in Arles. This artifact of incalculable historical and aesthetic value remained hidden for more than one hundred and twenty years. It reappears today as a revelation and an extraordinary treasure. Published in this volume for the first time, Van Gogh's lost sketchbook tells a riveting story. Over two tumultuous years in the artist's life, he drew sixty-five sketches, including landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and a self-portrait, within the ledger. These priceless drawings provide insight into the last years of Van Gogh's life, just before his fatal stay in Auvers-sur-Oise, and a new understanding of his most famous paintings, such as The Yellow House, The Night Café, and The Starry Night. With meticulous analysis of the sketchbook and the historical record, art historian Bogomila Welsh-Ovcharov discusses each drawing in terms of Van Gogh's career as a whole, and in particular during his time in Arles and Saint-Rémy-de-Provence between February 1888 and May 1890. This groundbreaking book includes facsimile reproductions of all the sketches and is richly illustrated with dozens of drawings, photographs, and paintings that situate the sketchbook in the context of Van Gogh's life's work and the history of art. The result of a remarkable discovery, Vincent van Gogh: The Lost Arles Sketchbook offers fresh insight into the life and work of one of the world's most beloved artists.

Book Albert Otto

  • ISBN : 9780957450127
  • Pages : 84 pages

Download or read book Albert Otto written by Albert Wainwright and published by . This book was released on 2013-01-07 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The artist, Albert Wainwright (1898-1943), left behind him a series of sketchbooks, diaries and manuscripts, that detailed the private and intimate side of his life all illustrated by hand. They included details of his homosexuality and his passion for young men and it is thought that much of this material was destroyed on Albert's death by his family. However, one or two items escaped and in this book three of Albert's sketchbooks have been reproduced. They are a remarkable survival: a visual documentary of Albert's relationship with a young German called Otto during the 1920s. Two of the sketchbooks record summer trips to Germany hiking and sight-seeing with Otto and a third sketchbook presents a very personal insight into a return visit by Otto to Yorkshire. So very little personal material of this kind remains today that the sketchbooks constitute an important piece of gay history. Wainwright was an artist whose talent was once compared favourably with that of his school friend Henry Moore, but whilst Moore went on from their shared Wakefield school days to international fame and reputation as a sculptor, Wainwright remains little known today. Wainwright poured his prodigious talent into teaching, book illustration, theatre costume and set design as well as portrait painting. In his lifetime he exhibited work several times but never quite fulfilled the potential of his talent, his work is only now slowly garnering an appreciative audience and being noticed by galleries, collectors and auction houses.

Figures such as Charles Darwin and Sir Edmund Hillary are joined here by lesser-known explorers such as Adela Breton, who braved the jungles of Mexico to make a record of Mayan monuments.
