Book Richard Grenville and the Lost Colony of Roanoke

Download or read book Richard Grenville and the Lost Colony of Roanoke written by Andy Gabriel-Powell and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-10-28 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: England's ill-fated first attempt to colonize America at Roanoke Island in 1587, more than 30 years before the Pilgrims set sail, has been the focus of numerous studies, fictional retellings and media interpretations. By 1590 the Lost Colony had disappeared and much of the available literature on it is based on research conducted more than 60 years ago. Drawing on newly discovered documents, several recent archaeological finds and a re-examination of contemporary writings, this book brings a fresh perspective to the story. The author discusses the 2012 discovery of a "hidden" fort on Virginia Governor John White's 1585 map and challenges accepted theories about the Dare Stones. Biographies of White and Sir Richard Grenville--Sir Walter Raleigh's cousin and a more involved participant in the venture than previously credited--are included, along with previously unpublished images.

Book The Lost Colony of the Templars

Download or read book The Lost Colony of the Templars written by Steven Sora and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2004-10-27 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reveals the existence of a Templar colony in the New World and how the explorer Verrazano, also a member of a secret society, attempted to reestablish contact with it • Explores Columbus’s connection to Henry Sinclair’s maps of the New World • Examines the secret alliance of Catholic Sulpicians and French Huguenots to preserve the Templar legacy • Reveals the hidden knowledge preserved in the Templar baptisteries found throughout Europe and in Newport, Rhode Island In 1524 the Italian explorer Giovanni da Verrazano was sent by the French king Francis I on an expedition ostensibly to find a shorter route to China. However, his true mission, Steven Sora suggests, was to contact a Templar colony that might have been established in Newport, Rhode Island, by Henry Sinclair at the end of the 14th century. In his expedition log Verrazano recorded that his only stay on this journey was at Newport Harbor, the site of a tower built to the exact measurements of a Templar baptistery, a sacred sanctuary representing baptism and eternal life. This tower is a remnant of Sinclair’s voyage to America nearly a century before that of Columbus (who had access to Sinclair’s maps thanks to his wife, who was Sinclair’s great-granddaughter). While Verrazano’s mission succeeded in finding the tower, the colony itself eluded him. His backers then decided to resurrect the dream of Acadia--a place where they could aspire to higher knowledge without fear of Church or state--by creating a new Secret Society that included Huguenots and Catholic Sulpicians. This Company of the Holy Sacrament would lay the foundations for Montreal in an attempt to realize the ambitions of Sinclair and his Templar companions, as well as to stave off efforts by the Jesuits to transform Quebec into a fiefdom of the orthodox Church. Quebec’s motto, “Je me souviens” (I remember), is a reference to this secret history.

Book American Regional Folklore

Download or read book American Regional Folklore written by Terry Ann Mood-Leopold and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2004-09-24 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An easy-to-use guide to American regional folklore with advice on conducting research, regional essays, and a selective annotated bibliography. American Regional Folklore begins with a chapter on library research, including how to locate a library suitable for folklore research, how to understand a library's resources, and how to construct a research strategy. Mood also gives excellent advice on researching beyond the library: locating and using community resources like historical societies, museums, fairs and festivals, storytelling groups, local colleges, newspapers and magazines, and individuals with knowledge of the field. The rest of the book is divided into eight sections, each one highlighting a separate region (the Northeast, the South and Southern Highlands, the Midwest, the Southwest, the West, the Northwest, Alaska, and Hawaii). Each regional section contains a useful overview essay, written by an expert on the folklore of that particular region, followed by a selective, annotated bibliography of books and a directory of related resources.
