Book Academic Research and Writing

Download or read book Academic Research and Writing written by Linda S. Bergmann and published by Pearson. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guiding students through the research process and helping them build the skills they need for effective research, Academic Research and Writing: Inquiry and Argument in College presents a highly accessible look at the complex issues that typically come up in reading and constructing research projects. Academic Research and Writing: Inquiry and Argument in College shows students that research is important beyond the classroom and is a necessary component in any career. Beginning with coverage of skills and techniques, this comprehensive text then moves into specific kinds of academic research tasks, showing the generic features and constraints of academic writing. The main issues necessary for understanding how to read and construct research projects are discussed, including plagiarism, copyright and patents, conventions used by different discourse communities, and how writers use sources in different ways. The result is that students are drawn into the thinking process involved in research.

Book The Curious Writer

Download or read book The Curious Writer written by Bruce P. Ballenger and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For courses in First-Year Composition - Rhetoric. Puts inquiry at the heart of good writing We write to learn as much as we do to express what we already know. In his remarkably personal and engaging voice, Bruce Ballenger makes that powerful concept central to The Curious Writer, Concise Edition. The Curious Writer, Concise Edition doesn't read like a textbook or provide a formula for composing essays. Instead, it encourages students to suspend judgment, to ask questions, and to seek answers much like academics do. Yet it covers a wide range of genres beyond the academic essay-narrative, profile, review, ethnography, argument, and more-all with a distinctive approach and "personality" that is lacking in other texts. It also reinforces the assumption that genres are malleable with a new chapter on repurposing or "re-genre-ing." Students love that this book helps them learn to write by pursuing their own curiosity. Teachers appreciate that Ballenger provides ample opportunities for students to develop the habits of mind necessary to become critical thinkers and curious writers. Also available with MyWritingLab(TM) MyWritingLab is an online homework, tutorial, and assessment program designed to work with this text to engage students and improve results. Within its structured environment, students practice what they learn, test their understanding, and pursue a personalized study plan that helps them better absorb course material and understand difficult concepts. Book Time To Know Them

Download or read book Time To Know Them written by Marilyn S. Sternglass and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-25 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a time of declining resources in institutions of higher education, we grapple with how priorities are to be set for the limited resources available. Most vulnerable are those students labeled underprepared by colleges and universities. Should we argue that the limited resources available ought to be used to support these students through their undergraduate years? And, if we decide that we want to do that, what evidence of their potential for success can we provide that will justify the use of these resources? Through longitudinal research that follows students who have been so labeled over all their college years, we can begin to find answers to these questions. Time to Know Them is the first book that follows the experiences of a group of students over their entire academic experience. No previous studies have brought together the factors incorporated in this study: *examining writing and learning on a true longitudinal basis; *studying a multicultural urban population; *investigating the relationship between writing and learning by examining papers written over time for regularly assigned academic courses across a range of disciplines; and *taking into consideration non-academic factors that influence academic performance such as race, gender, socio-economic status, and ideological orientation. Through interviews twice a semester over six years, the collection of papers written for all courses, observations of instructional settings, and analysis of required institutional tests of writing, the author has been able to pull together a more complete picture of writing and intellectual development over the college years than has previously been available in any study. Students are seen to acquire the ability to handle more complex reasoning tasks as they find themselves in more challenging intellectual settings and where risk-taking and exploration of new ideas are valued. The integration of students' previous life experiences into their academic studies allows them to analyze, critique, modify, and apply their previously held world views to their new learning. These changes are seen to occur over time with instructional settings and support providing key roles in writing development. Personal factors in students' lives present difficulties that require persistence and dedication to overcome. Never before have the complexities of real individual lives as they affect academic performance been so clearly presented.

Book excerpt: "The Thief Next Door" shows some successful business leaders using a little-known management technique to combine their staff's talents and compete against corruption. Developed in the non-profit sector and not yet found in the popular management literature, this technique is used to fight the commonly overlooked "soft-collar" crime that is rampant in most industries and professions around the world and rationalized by many as "business as usual." Don gives real-life and often shocking examples of soft-collar crime in the metropolitan New York construction industry to allow us to better understand it and recognize it in other industries and professions. He includes unique personal stories involving his own experiences with organized crime. Practitioners of the skills revealed here regard it as the answer many management gurus have been searching for to bridge the gap between theory and practice in management, whether related to businesses, non-profit organizations, or community groups. Learn how these same skills can help you harness the creative talent of your own company, family, or community organization!
