Book excerpt: The Longest Embrace is a solution-filled guide to coping with one of today's most urgent healthcare issues -- aging parents no longer able to care for themselves. The Longest Embrace is a timely, frank introduction to the challenges more than a third of American families already face as they care for elderly, declining parents or other family members. In 17 concise chapters, veteran Care Manager Barbara R. Hornby describes the emotional struggles and crises families are confronting, the healthcare system's strengths and shortcomings in dealing with the aged, the special problem of dementia, and practical solutions families can use to guide their parents through a more secure, fulfilling final chapter. Hornby's discussion includes a moving account of her own father's slow passing and dozens of examples from her 30-plus years as a geriatric nurse and care manager that dramatically illustrate the healthcare dilemmas families are experiencing.

Book excerpt: On 16 June 1957, a shoot-out in a village church in northern Lebanon leaves two dozen people dead. In the aftermath of the massacre, the town is rent in two: the Al-Ramis in the north and their rivals the Al-Samaeenis in the south. But lives once so closely intertwined cannot easily be divided. Neighbours turn into enemies and husbands and wives are forced to choose between loyalty to each other and loyalty to their clan. Drawing on an actual killing that took place in his home town, Douaihy reconstructs that June day from the viewpoints of people who witnessed the killing or whose lives were forever altered by it. A young girl overhears her father lending his gun to his cousins, but refusing to accompany them to the church. A school boy walks past the dead bodies, laid out in the town square on beds brought out from the houses. A baker whose shop is trapped on the wrong side of the line hopes the women who buy his bread will protect him. At the center of the portrait is Eliyya, who, twenty years after emigrating to the US, returns to the village to learn about the father who was shot through the heart in the massacre, the father he never knew. With a masterful eye for detail, Douaihy reconstructs that fateful June Sunday when rain poured from the sky and the traditions and affections of village life were consumed by violence and revenge.

Download or read book Blazing Water written by Melisande Arven and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2018-12-15 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We need water. It is just as important for us as air. This is why we frequently live on the shores of the Ux on rafts or in houses on stilts; we live from catching fish or diving for pearls. We are the Bnaur-Dux – people who breathe water. In fact this description is not completely accurate, for we can no more breathe water than other people can. Something in our blood and the fat cells in our skin is different however and can store oxygen. So far no-one has been able to explain it properly to me. At any rate, we very seldom suffer from incidents of suffocation or run the risk of drowning. But we are not invincible in the depths of the river. The water can kill us if we are not careful. But there are some of us who are able to do much more. They have a rare gift. No-one speaks of it – unless in a whisper. It is almost like a great secret. Those who are blessed with this gift are the Ztaa-Samro – the fire swimmers. Only our men inherit this gift. There has never been a female Bnaur who has made the water sing. But it happens with me. And I am not a man! My name is Noeg. I was named after the pink blossoms of the water clover that grows in the endless meadows near the banks of the Ux and bobs up and down with each wave. I am a pearl diver. I never wanted to be anything else. But everything has changed. This is my story.

Book excerpt: Embracing Life will help you become the best version of yourself. Emeka Anyiam, a licensed marriage and family therapist, focuses on the stages of life as defined by famous ego psychologist Erik Erickson, elaborating on his work by incorporating contemporary issues. The author observes that we tend not to embrace uncomfortable feelings or actions. Instead, we may attempt to suppress those thoughts, feelings, actions, or circumstances that do not fit the image we want to project. While it is easy for us to embrace comforting thoughts, feelings, and specific actions, it is imperative to we also embrace those discomforting thoughts, feelings, and specific actions and those sad circumstances as well. The more you embrace who you are, the more empowered you will be. Join the author as he explores the value of recognizing the whole of who you are—the good and the bad—and how to live the life you were meant to live.

Book excerpt: Dialecticoma Dreaming is a journey into the imagination of dreams and philosophical minefields. I am often asked the question, where does that wild imagination of yours come from? It usually follows my recounting of a curious story of a grand or mysterious adventure on earth or in outer space, of strange happenings, or of events of incredible horror. My response to the question is almost always the same - I had this really weird dream last night. For as long as I can remember, my nights (and days) have been filled with a landscape of idiosyncratic symbol-filled stories. These are the tangents of life in my mind. This book pulls together a small number of short stories that have been inspired by my dreams.

Rather, it’s a book about inspiring and courageous women who just happened to be hockey players.”—Korea Times The inspiring, unlikely story of the American, Canadian, South Korean and even North Korean women who joined together to form Korea’s first Olympic ice hockey team. Two weeks before the opening ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics, South Korea’s women’s hockey team was forced into a predicament that no president, ambassador or general had been able to resolve in the sixty-five years since the end of the Korean War. Against all odds, the group of young women were able to bring North and South Korea closer than ever before. The team was built for this moment. They had been brought together from across the globe and from a wide variety of backgrounds—concert pianist, actress, high school student, convenience store worker—to make history. Suddenly thrust into an international spotlight, they showed the powerful meaning of what a unified Korea could resemble. In A Team of Their Own, Seth Berkman goes behind the scenes to tell the story of these young women as they became a team amid immense political pressure and personal turmoil, and ultimately gained worldwide acceptance on a journey that encapsulates the truest meanings of sport and family.
