Book The Psychological Journey To and From Loneliness

Download or read book The Psychological Journey To and From Loneliness written by Ami Rokach and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2019-04-06 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are three universal experiences that we cannot escape: loneliness, illness, and death. The Psychological Journey To and From Loneliness addresses what was termed the plague of the 21st century--loneliness. Loneliness is stigmatized in our society, so untold number of people walk around lonely, unable to do what is so naturally called for--make their suffering known, and approach others for company and support. Thankfully, loneliness is slowly, but steadily, coming out of the "closet." This book will highlight not only the experience and what can be done about it, but also the experiences that influence it (i.e., our childhood, cultural and religious influences, and our way of life) as well as the effects that loneliness has on various population groups and how it is experienced at different times in our lives. This volume reviews theoretical approaches to the study of loneliness: the (positive) functions that loneliness may serve in our lives; the stages in life when loneliness is quite "visible" and its effects on us; the life experiences that may strengthen the feeling that one is all alone and forgotten; life experiences that we do not commonly connect to loneliness but it is clearly present in them (e.g., pregnancy and childbirth); and the approaches that are available to copy with its pain and limit its negative effects on us. The book closes with a review of how psychotherapy can assist those who need encouragement and support in their struggle with loneliness. The book is particularly suitable for academics, researchers, and clinicians who aim to help clients identify, address, and cope with loneliness. Presents the latest research on the development, causes and effects of loneliness Studies loneliness in childhood, adolescence, and middle and old age Outlines what can be done to limit the negative effects of loneliness on an individual Looks at how childhood, cultural, religious and other influences affect loneliness

Book excerpt: "This is the story of the loneliest journey of our lives, the journey which takes us through the 'dark valley' of illness and fear to the gates of death. Everything that happens in this narrative has happened to someone, and each person who speaks is 'real' in the sense that they have been forged out of fragments of men and women who live or have lived on this planet. This, then, is a story about people, well people who become sick, and sick people who become well again, and the men and women who care for them as best they can"--Introd.

Book Seek You

Download or read book Seek You written by Kristen Radtke and published by Pantheon. This book was released on 2021-07-13 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of Imagine Wanting Only This—a timely and moving meditation on isolation and longing, both as individuals and as a society. There is a silent epidemic in America: loneliness. Shameful to talk about and often misunderstood, loneliness is everywhere, from the most major of metropolises to the smallest of towns. In Seek You, Kristen Radtke's wide-ranging exploration of our inner lives and public selves, Radtke digs into the ways in which we attempt to feel closer to one another, and the distance that remains. Through the lenses of gender and violence, technology and art, Radtke ushers us through a history of loneliness and longing, and shares what feels impossible to share. Ranging from the invention of the laugh-track to the rise of Instagram, the bootstrap-pulling cowboy to the brutal experiments of Harry Harlow, Radtke investigates why we engage with each other, and what we risk when we turn away. With her distinctive, emotionally-charged drawings and deeply empathetic prose, Kristen Radtke masterfully shines a light on some of our most vulnerable and sublime moments, and asks how we might keep the spaces between us from splitting entirely.

Book The Loneliest Americans

Download or read book The Loneliest Americans written by Jay Caspian Kang and published by Crown. This book was released on 2022-10-11 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “provocative and sweeping” (Time) blend of family history and original reportage that explores—and reimagines—Asian American identity in a Black and white world “[Kang’s] exploration of class and identity among Asian Americans will be talked about for years to come.”—Jennifer Szalai, The New York Times Book Review (Editors’ Choice) ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Time, NPR, Mother Jones In 1965, a new immigration law lifted a century of restrictions against Asian immigrants to the United States. Nobody, including the lawmakers who passed the bill, expected it to transform the country’s demographics. But over the next four decades, millions arrived, including Jay Caspian Kang’s parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles. They came with almost no understanding of their new home, much less the history of “Asian America” that was supposed to define them. The Loneliest Americans is the unforgettable story of Kang and his family as they move from a housing project in Cambridge to an idyllic college town in the South and eventually to the West Coast. Their story unfolds against the backdrop of a rapidly expanding Asian America, as millions more immigrants, many of them working-class or undocumented, stream into the country. At the same time, upwardly mobile urban professionals have struggled to reconcile their parents’ assimilationist goals with membership in a multicultural elite—all while trying to carve out a new kind of belonging for their own children, who are neither white nor truly “people of color.” Kang recognizes this existential loneliness in himself and in other Asian Americans who try to locate themselves in the country’s racial binary. There are the businessmen turning Flushing into a center of immigrant wealth; the casualties of the Los Angeles riots; the impoverished parents in New York City who believe that admission to the city’s exam schools is the only way out; the men’s right’s activists on Reddit ranting about intermarriage; and the handful of protesters who show up at Black Lives Matter rallies holding “Yellow Peril Supports Black Power” signs. Kang’s exquisitely crafted book brings these lonely parallel climbers together and calls for a new immigrant solidarity—one rooted not in bubble tea and elite college admissions but in the struggles of refugees and the working class.

Download or read book The Loneliest Places written by Rachel Dickinson and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2022-10-15 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A child's suicide pitches you into a hellish place of fragmentary images, the deepest depression imaginable, efforts to destroy yourself, and an almost complete break with what's happening in the world around you. That was my experience. I wish it upon no one." The essays of The Loneliest Places began as a chronicle of Rachel Dickinson's life after her son's suicide. The pieces became much more. Dickinson writes the unimaginable and terrifying facts of heartbreaking loss. In The Loneliest Places she tells stories from her months on the run, fleeing her grief and herself, as she escapes to Iceland and the Falkland Islands—as far as possible from the memories of her dead son, Jack. She frankly relates the paralyzing emotion that sometimes left her trapped in her home, confined to a single chair, helplessly isolated. The tales from these years are bleak and Dickinson's journey home, back to her changed self and fractured family, is lonely. Conjuring Emily Dickinson, however, she describes how hope was sighted, allowed to perch, and then, remarkably, made actual.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this selection of extremely personal extracts from her diary, Glen Hinton shares the ways in which betrayal, divorce and domestic abuse affected her. Living with a husband who suffers from depression seems hard enough for Glen, but she is plagued by misfortune: personal accidents cause her to live in constant discomfort and multiple bereavements of family members, friends and friends' children test her emotionally. However, when she comes home to find her husband in bed with another woman, her world crashes down around her. This frank and sombre selection of personal thoughts chronicles the years that Glen spent trying to work through all of these events alone, on this, her loneliest journey. He who reads on must be prepared to travel some of the darkest roads that I have travelled alone. Book Journey The Way of the Disciple

Download or read book Journey The Way of the Disciple written by Richard Littledale and published by Authentic Media Inc. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accessible and thought-provoking devotional look at the nature of discipleship through the lens of pilgrimage. What do we learn about God whilst on the move which could not be learnt whilst stationary? From Abraham, Moses, Ruth to Jesus himself and the apostle Paul, the Bible is full of stories of people on the move and Journey looks at what we can learn from looking at the Christian life as one of pilgrimage. The chapters cover subjects such as provisions needed on the journey, communications and companions along the way, distractions from the path, the growth of 'new monasticism', and death as 'journey's end'. With questions for personal reflection included after each chapter this is much more than a book about pilgrimage, it encourages the reader to learn to journey through life in an attitude of pilgrimage -revealing that it is often in the very act of journeying that we find our deepest spiritual insights.

Download or read book Wonderful Exchange written by Alexander Ryrie and published by Paulist Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander Ryrie has written an utterly simple, yet eminently practical introduction to the process and eperience of silent prayer, a way of praying that helps us be more in touch with our inner selves and God within. Drawing especially from the Orthodox tradition of the Christian East, and sharing his own experiences, he describes aspects of the process so that those who already engage in silent prayer may enter more fully into it, while invinting newcomers who have not approached prayer in this way. Although he divides the book into chapters, the author emphasizes that silent prayer cannot be broken down into different stages or steps that follow one another. To that end he first describes the different kinds of silence, then offers practical methods of practicing silent prayer, the importance of "entering ourselves" and encountering God, which are reciprocal and inseparable aspects of the same activity. He points out, finally the practical aspects of silent prayer for our lives. Each chapter is followed by short quotations from Orthodox writers that illustrate points made in the chapters.
