Book The Lone Shieling

Download or read book The Lone Shieling written by G.H. Needler and published by . This book was released on 1941-12-15 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a bit of literary detective work. A poem, which has endeared itself as perhaps no other to Scots away from their home country, appeared anonymously in Blackwood’s Edinburgh Magazine for September, 1829, under the title "Canadian Boat-Song." Since then a great number of attempts to ferret out the author have been made in books, review articles, and newspaper correspondence. Among those to whom it has been ascribed are the Earl of Eglinton, Sir Walter Scott, Christopher North, James Hogg, Lockhart, John Galt, and others. Recently, the guessing has included also Galt’s friend David Macbeth Moir. Professor Needler presents here the evidence that the poem, more appropriately called "The Lone Shieling," forms a beautiful tie of sentiment between Upper Canada and the Scottish Highlands, as it was Galt’s work for the Canada Company that gave Moir the direct inspiration for the writing of it.

Download or read book Essays in Scotch Irish History written by Edward Rodney Richey Green and published by Ulster Historical Foundation. This book was released on 1992 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a reprint of the second volume in the Ulster Historical Foundation's Historical Series, which was first published in 1969. These five essays were delivered as lectures at a conference on the Scotch-Irish held in Belfast in 1965. This edition contains an introduction by Steve Ickringill re-viewing recent research. The first essay is an examination of President Woodrow Wilson's Scots and Scotch-Irish inheritance of family and religious traditions. He is shown as typifying almost all aspects of the remarkable Scots and Scotch-Irish legacy to American society, culture and politics. The next paper considers the educational contribution of the Scotch-Irish to colonial America, beginning with elementary church schools and academies for preparing young men for the ministry, and proceeding to the most important institution, Princeton, decisively Presbyterian and Scots in character. A neglected period in the study of Irish emigration is covered in an essay on Ulster Emigration to America, 1783-1815; this shows that emigration continued on a large scale after 1783 in spite of British Government restrictions, and that these emigrants like their predecessors, immediately assumed loyalty to their adopted country, notably in the war of 1812. The fourth paper argues that perhaps the most important aspect of the influence of the Scotch-Irish in the making of the United States was not so much their contribution to leadership in politics and education as in their shaping of the patterns of settlement and land-use. The final essay, on Ulster's emigrant's letters, points to the value of these documents as sources of information on the emigrant experience, both social and economic.

Book excerpt: Rebellion was recurrent in the Highlands because the Gaels (Scoti) were an often-oppressed indigenous minority in the nation, Scotland, to which they gave their name. They spoke a language, Gaelic, few outsiders would learn, and had their own family and social system, the clans. Warfare was bloody, culminating in the catastrophe of Culloden Moor during the doomed quest to restore the Stuart kingship to all of Britain. Economic hardship, including the near-genocidal Clearances, in which tenant farmers were replaced with sheep, drove the Gaels from the glens and islands, so that most today live in the diaspora, including millions in North America. Although the Gaels lack a single genetic identity, they clearly draw from distinct roots in the Irish, Norse and Picts. Despite their hardship, the Gaels are also presented in romantic portrayals by the artistic elite of other nations. This book offers ways in which the reader might find roots and ancestry in unfamiliar terrain. Chapters discuss the landscape and language of the Highlanders, the rise of clans, feuds and invasions, and eventual emigration.

  • Pages : 391 pages

Download or read book John Galt written by Regina Hewitt and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2012 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this volume revalue the work of the Romantic-era Scottish writer John Galt, connecting his methods and goals with Scottish Enlightenment "conjectural" historiography and with later social theorizing. Emphasizing the construction, representation and use of social knowledge, the essays find new meaning in Galt's perceptions of the Atlantic and Mediterranean worlds in which he traveled, his attitudes toward community building and progress, and his innovations in fiction, drama, journalism and biography.
