Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London Quarterly Review, Vol. 60: April and July, 1883 Mr. Maxwell planned all the buildings and improvements on his estate, and superintended all domestic matters, even to the cutting of the last for his own square-toed shoes. And as James was his one companion and care, it is not an exaggeration to say that those mechanical and mathematical proclivities which he manifested at a quite juvenile age, and which found their consummation in the planning of the Cavendish Laboratory during his Cambridge professorship, were the direct products of his father's example and training. As his biographers say, "The Galloway boy was in many ways the father of the Cambridge man; and even the 'ploys' of his childhood contained the germ of his life work" (p. 429). The necessities of education led to James being sent to Edinburgh Academy at the age of ten, his father taking up his abode again at Edinburgh, except during the summer season, when he repaired to Glenlair. He was thus enabled to take the oversight of his son's studies, and also, which was more important, of his recreation. Some slight oddities in dress and manners did not tend to make the boy's introduction to school-life smooth and agreeable. Tunics of hodden gray tweed, and shoes clasped and fashioned after the somewhat bucolic ideas of his father, were not likely to escape the keen observation of frolicsome schoolboys, to whom round jackets and shoe-strings were de rigueur. But his fine natural gift of irony, combined with his geniality of disposition, saved him on many an occasion from provoking merriment, and established him eventually as a general favourite. The very first time he was questioned as to the maker of his shoes, he replied in broad Scotch patois: "Din ye ken, 'twas a man, And he lived in a house In whilk was a mouse." At school, though at first he seems to have found more pleasure in watching "humble bees" than in the monotony of Latin grammar, yet he soon applied himself with vigour to his books, and placed himself in the first rank among his compeers. His ingenuity is evidenced by his framing a system of mnemonics based on the positions of the windows in the school, and by his humorous sketches and hieroglyphic letters to his father. Download or read book The London Quarterly Review Vol 54 written by William Lonsdale Watkinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-12-18 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London Quarterly Review, Vol. 54: April and July, 1880 Scripture is like a nose of wax, which every man may twist according to his own fancy. We cannot touch upon the brief history of the first French translations of the Bible into the French; but pass to the more important scene in which Erasmus and Luther, with their coadjutors, play their conspicuous part. Erasmus is the Hesperus of the modern host. The following words are a translation of some of the stirring sayings with which he began the campaign, taken from his Enchiridion Militia Ckristiam' Paul would have us to be always armed with praeer and knowledge; he tells us to pray without ceasing. Ere you see the difference bet ween human and Divine letters; for all Holy Scripture is divinely inspired, and proceeds from God as its author. That which is least in it tends to show the humility of the word, which encloses great mysteries as it were under con temptible phrases. Since faith is the only door that lets in to Christ, it is a rule of the first importance that you think rightly of Him and of the Scriptures delivered from Him by His spirit. And you must believe them, not only with the lips, as boldly, fearfully, and doubtingly as common Christians do, but, with the whole heart, letting the word dwell rootedly within you, holding firmly that not a single jot is in it which does not.mightily concern your salvation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London Quarterly Review, Vol. 26: April and July, 1866 It was characteristic of the want of religious earnestness in the masses, and the want of genius and independence in the leaders, that under Edward VI. The Church of England had its Book of Common Prayer before it had a confession of faith; and, as the articles of religion came latest, their con tents were more decidedly and consistently evangelical. Eliza beth's first care, again, was to proclaim her supremacy, and to establish uniformity in the celebration of divine service throughout the kingdom: it was not until after the lapse of thirteen years that the articles of religion were established by the authority of the Queen and Parliament and that the people were officially informed what they were to believe. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London Quarterly Review, Vol. 32: April and July, 1869 We feel a great responsibility in reviewing this work. It deeply affects our belief in Christianity itself. Dr. Davidson still clings to a belief of some kind in its Divine character. But he subverts our trust in the credibility of the records, in which our entire knowledge of it is contained. This will be apparent when we inform our readers of the nature of the results to which his criticism has conducted him. First: neither of the four Gospels was written by the per son to whom it has been ascribed. Secondly: they date respectively about as late as the years 100, 110, 120 and 150. Thirdly: even the three Synoptics contain a consider able number of unhistorical narratives and events, and been composed by persons who have more or less distorted the facts for party purposes, and have invented others. Fourthly the Gospel according to St. John is almost entirely nu historical. Fifthly: the Acts of the Apostles has a very small amount of matter in it which is really trustworthy, and the author has framed it with the intention of reconciling Petrine and Pauline Christianity; or, to use plain words, although he is the author of the third Gospel, whenever he did not find suitable materials he forged them. Sixthly: the only genuine writings in the New Testament are the two epistles to the Thessalonians, Galatians, Romans, two to the Corinthians, Philippians, Colossians, Philemon, Jude, and the Book of Revelation. Seventhly: the other epistles ascribed to St. Paul are the work of a much later age, or, to speak plainly, are forgeries; and the epistle to the Hebrews is also a late production. Eighthly: the first epistle of St. Peter is not the work of the Apostle, but of some Christian who wished to place Pauline doctrines in the mouth of the leader of Jewish Christianity; and the epistle of St. James, though essentially Jewish in its aspect, yet pre sents us with Jewish Christianity in a second stage of its development, and that the second of St. Peter, and second and third of John, are neither genuine nor apostolic. Lastly, though not least, in the audacity of its assertion, that the first epistle of St. John is not the work of the Apostle; and although external evidence is strong in its favour, it can be proved by internal evidence alone, not to have been written by even the author of the Fourth Gospel. Such is a brief view of the contents of the volumes before us. We owe it to our readers to give positive proof of the position which we assume, that whatever may be the amount of Dr. Davidson's erudition, it is rendered useless by an entire absence of the power of logical reasoning and sound judgment. Download or read book The London Quarterly Review Vol 52 written by William Lonsdale Watkinson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London Quarterly Review, Vol. 52: April and July, 1879 The Conference proceedings were inaugurated by a good plain sermon on The Missionary Commission, and an address on The Work of the Holy Spirit, of more than ordinary vigour, beauty, and spiritual insight. The list of essays opens with one on Entire Consecration Essential to Missionary Success. The most impressive points of the essay seem to be that entire consecration does not mean celibacy, that it is not good for man to be alone, and that no more important influence can be exerted on heathen families than that of female married Missionaries. Entire consecration, we are further informed, means a creed, and excludes literary labour of great cost of time and strength. In dealing with the question of what constitutes Missionary success, the author of the essay tells us that entire consecration is itself a great success, and that not converts or gathering of congregations consti tutss the highest Missionary success, but the thorough setting forth and holding up to the heathen of Jesus Christ and Him crucified. The means of securing the success thus defined are mental training, good manners, Christian manliness, and a-holy life. We are next introduced to an essay on The Field in its Magnitude, by a writer well known to the English public through an entertaining narrative of travels in North China and Manchuria. The title of the essay is made to cover sundry observations on the vast mineral resources of the Chinese Empire, the intellectual capacity of the Chinese people, and the spiritual aspects of our work. Most of the essayists seem impatient of the texts to which they have been picketed by the committee of arrangements; and the lack of agreement between the papers and their titles, suggests the idea of a general stampede.
