Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, Vol. 10: July-December, 1855 In its present form the apparatus consists of no less than six parts; viz. 1, the coil of wire in which induction is developed, the induction coil 2, the coil which conducts the inducing galvanic current, here called the primary coil; 3, the soft-iron core; 4, the current breaker; 5, the condenser; and 6, the voltaic battery or primary source of electricity; to which parts, lastly, some additional apparatus must be added. Each of these six elements acts, more or less, upon the remaining five e; and the ultimate result, the induced current, depends upon a suitable distribution and arrangement of all. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, Vol. 38: Fifth Series; July-December, 1894 Wien 187 1 The theoretical coefficient also varies as the power of the absolute temperature, but it has been shown by Loschmidt and Obermayer (site. Alcad. Wien, lxi., lxii., lxxv., lxxxi., lxxxv., lxxxvii., in experiments on several pairs of gases, that their coefficients of diffusion vary more rapidly with temperature than according to the theoretical law. They found empirically that the coefficients vary as powers of the temperature, ranging from to 2 instead of the of the theory of forceless molecules. Here is where the effect of molecular force comes in, just as in the case of viscosity. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science, Vol. 20: Fifth Series; July-December 1885 In both J oule's and Weber's experiments a possible source of error seems to have been ignored. The wire was assumed to be at the temperature of the water in which it was immersed, and its resistance was calculated on this assumption. It is evident, however, that the wire was hotter than the water, inasmuch as it was giving heat to the water. The error due to this cause is of uncertain amount. If corrected for this error, the values of the equivalent would be increased and their excess over the water-friction values would become greater than before. To avoid this source of error, the research described below was planned. The suggestion and general plan of the research I owe to Professor Rowland.
