But in this provocative book of postmodern philosophy, Ermanno Bencivenga presents an extended reflection on the subversive nature of logic--logic that is not stable and certain, but deceptive and tortuous. The author uses Anselm, the Archbishop of Canterbury at the end of the eleventh century, as his case study to show how human reason can be devious. In Anselm's famous texts, his beliefs are not at stake, he is sure of them--he only seeks to under-stand his faith, not to prove it. But by looking at Anselm's writings as a whole, Bencivenga argues that they undermine Anselm's own interpretation. Not only can reason be more effective than force in fighting the unorthodox, but it can also be a subtle way of undermining orthodoxy. Bencivenga demonstrates how reason plays different roles at the different levels of Anselm's project. For its authoritarian subject, reason imposes a limit on its rebellious character. For its subversive subject, reason opens up an infinite arena for experimentation whose end will never be reached. We discussed Anselm of Canterbury's ontological argument for the existence of God. None of us was convinced that Anselm's proof was valid. In the beginning of the evening, we agreed with Schopenhauer who called Anselm's argument a "charming joke, _ but we went on talking and found ourselves challenged by Anselm's argument. It triggered a discussion that clarified various issues of our thoughts. This paper will be an investigation of the implications of Anselm's argument in the context of the contemporary western world -- an investigation of the multiple tangents from Anselm's philosophy to the streams of the popular mindsets of our time. Anselm (1033/4-1109), archbishop of Canterbury, lived in a time when many people felt that philosophical method possessed an intellectual respectability which theology lacked. Some theologians called Dialectics, like Anselm, started to apply philosophical dialectic and logic to theological issues. The question of the time was how the independence of philosophy could be reconciled with the Catholic position. In 1072, Peter Damian defined philosophy as ancilla dominae (maid of the Lord). Among the Dialectics, Anselm belonged to the group of the Realists. About 1070 he started his writing career. His most important works are Proslogium, Monologium, and Cur Deus homo. Although calling Anselm the "father of Scholasticism_ might be an exaggeration, he set the trend in theology and philosophy for the following centuries by explaining the Christian faith in a rational, logical system. In the 12th century, the Roman Catholic Church made him a saint, and in the 18th called him doctor ecclesiae

The first book from the sequence, Monologion was created back in 1075. It's first title was A Monologue on the Reason for Faith. In this work, Anselm states that anyone should be able to convince themselves of the existence of God through reason alone if they are intelligent. If there is something good, there can be things greater and better. Thus, there should be one thing that is supremely good and supremely great. It should be supreme among all other existing things.In Proslogion, Anselm develops his arguments previously presented in Monologion. This work is most famous for formulation of the ontological argument for the existence of God. This argument is also known to the Scholastics as "Anselm's argument" (ratio Anselmi). According to it, even atheists can imagine a greatest being, having such attributes that nothing greater could exist. But if such a perfect being can be imagined as not existing, another perfect being can be imagined as existing, or having an attribute of existence. Thus, such a perfect being should exist. The collection also contains the book that wasn't written by Anselm but is tightly connected with his Proslogion. That is In Behalf of The Fool by Gaunilo. He was a Benedictine monk in the middle ages who contradicted St. Anselm's ontological argument. Gaunilo was an empiricist and believed that a human experience can be acquired only through senses. He stated that St. Anselm was wrong because the logic of the same kind would force one to conclude many things existed which certainly didn't. In Cur Deus Homo, that is often translated like Why God Was A Man, Anselm speculates on the topic of atonement, that is the salvation of humans through the crucifixion of Jesus Crist. He writes that thought the history the humans made too many sins for an adequate restitution and to save the humanity, deemed for devastation, God sent Jesus. Jesus is a sinless being both divine and human, that made him able to pay for the sins of humankind by his death. Cur Deus Homo is considered one of the greatest works of Anselm and it had an immense importance in the development of the further church doctrine.

Yet, despite its distinct originality, philosophers have mostly avoided the question of what modal concepts the argument uses, and whether Anselm's metaphysics entitles him to use them. Here, Brian Leftow sets out Anselm's modal metaphysics. He argues that Anselm has an "absolute", "broadly logical", or "metaphysical" modal concept, and that his metaphysics provides acceptable truth makers for claims in this modality. He shows that his modal argument is committed (in effect) to the Brouwer system of modal logic, and defends the claim that Brouwer is part of the logic of "absolute" or "metaphysical" modality.
