Book Acidification Research Evaluation and Policy Applications

Download or read book Acidification Research Evaluation and Policy Applications written by T. Schneider and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1992-04-24 with total page 599 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A large number of nationwide research programmes in the field of acidification have been carried out in the last decade. Especially in Western Europe, extensive programmes have resulted in a good overview of all the effects - mostly negative - caused by acidifying substances. There is now consensus that types of acidification damage relate to the unique geography of an area: air pollution affects vegetation; acid aerosol the ozone layer. New in this volume, is the relation between scientific results of integrated research programmes and policy actions to prevent, reduce and limit the widespread damage caused by acidification. The results of many different national research programmes are evaluated and compared to present a unique compilation for the research scientist and policy maker. In this volume thematic reviews on specific topics of acidification research are presented, followed by overviews of acidification policy plans and actual abatement plans. The result is the best review of acidification research carried out worldwide during the last decade and presentation of the critical relation between research results and policy actions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigating Social Issues uses economic theory to analyse real events and problems and to evaluate different solutions. It stresses the importance of value judgements and demonstrates how one person's success can be another's disaster. Newspaper cuttings have been used as an integral part of the text to highlight the causes, effects and solutions to these issues and problems. The topics covered include health, education, transport, income distribution, inner cities, regional policy, housing and the environment.

Book Restoration of Aquatic and Terrestrial Systems

Download or read book Restoration of Aquatic and Terrestrial Systems written by R.W. Brocksen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proceedings of a special technical session dealing with the addition of Ca based materials to waters and soils for the purpose of restoring or enhancing fisheries in acidified waters are contained in this volume. The session was part of the North American Fisheries Society's annual meeting sponsored by the Water Quality Section of the Society. While the concept of liming is not new, the extent of the recent research, demonstrations and applications reported at the conference is enlightening. Six countries are represented by government, state and private sector participants. The scope of activities reported in the following 23 papers range from the simple to the very complex addition of liming materials to ponds, lakes, streams and watersheds. This volume of presentations is broad and impressive as are the methods used in the actual application of the neutralizing materials. Those programs that are demonstration application oriented are deploying techniques that are either new or modifications of existing technology.

Book Liming of Acidified Surface Waters

Download or read book Liming of Acidified Surface Waters written by Lennart Henrikson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 471 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Acidification is one of the most serious environmental problems - especially in Sweden, which suffers most from the consequences of acid rain. Besides international negotiations to reduce sulphur emissions - 85% of the acid load on Sweden can be traced to emissions from outside the country itself - the Swedish Government has employed large-scale, operative liming activities to counteract acidification of surface waters. The scientific results show that - although acidification cannot be solved by liming alone - the measures taken resulted in substantial improvements to around 8,000 Swedish lakes and watercourses. The idea is that other countries affected by acidification may also profit from this experience.

Download or read book Acid Waters in Wales written by R.W. Edwards and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together research into the process of stream acidification and its impact on Welsh surface waters, carried out over the past decade or so. It is perhaps surprising that not until the 1980's was clear evidence of stream acidification assembled. In Wales, concerns over pollution had focused water quality sampling principally on the areas of traditional heavy industry and large urban popula tions served by inadequate sewerage systems and sewage disposal arrange ments. Mistakenly, it had been assumed that, with its prevailing westerly winds, Wales would receive precipitation substantially unpolluted by the industrial and urban emissions from Britain and mainland Europe. Assurance of the high quality of Welsh upland streams, the traditional nursery ground of salmonids, was eroded particularly by studies in the vicinity of Llyn Brianne reservoir in the catchment of the River Tywi of Central Wales. These demonstrated a clear correspondence between the biological quality and fisheries of streams in the catchment and aspects of stream chemistry, par ticularly pH, aluminium and calcium on the one hand, and catchment land use on the other. It is salutary to record that the first signals were of an inexplicable failure of the runs of migratory salmonids into the upper catchment, occupied by the Llyn Brianne reservoir and its influent streams, and the failure to restore the fishery by re-stocking with eggs and fry. Only then did the significance of the recent decline in some other upland lake and reservoir fisheries in Wales become apparent.
