Since that time I have published a volume on The Church nianship of John Wesley, which may perhaps be' regarded as another contribution towards the same object. Book Living Thoughts of John Wesley

Download or read book Living Thoughts of John Wesley written by John Wesley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Living Thoughts of John Wesley: A Comprehensive Selection of the Living Thoughts of the Founder of Methodism as Contained in His Miscellaneous Works The works of Rev. John Wesley are a gold-mine of doctrine and instruction; but, like other gold-mines, they contain a few things which are not gold. The two volumes of his sermons are nearly all pure gold. His journals and correspondence are also rich and valuable. His miscellaneous writings, however, require some sifting before their circulation in this country can be much revived. There is so much of the controversial element in them, so much of personal or merely local reference having no present significance, and so much of general discussion and argumenta tion pertaining to the Old World of a century ago that Amer icans do not feel much interested in them. Many trivial matters are also to be found, and several of the important treatises, like the French, Latin, Greek, and Hebrew grammars, have become obsolete. But scattered along among these old documents are many liter ary and doctrinal gems of rarest value, needing only a new' typographical background, better mechanical finish, and more modern arrangement and setting to be. Appreciated at their worth and eagerly sought for by all good people. To separate these gems from their old surroundings, group them in convenient and attractive form, and to preserve them from loss in the transition has been the undertaking of the pres ent compiler. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life of John Wesley The author has so grouped the leading events in the life- of Mr. Wesley as to present in as small compass a fair and distinct likeness of the great Founder of Methodism. It is a miniature representation, but large and distinct enough- to give our young people a correct idea of the man and his work. We think the book opportiae, and trust it will do much good. Our children should be aught to know and veninerate the character of the man who has done so much for the world, and to whom we as a Church are indebted for our existence. It is a fault of the present generation of Methodists that they know so little about him. We place this memoir in our catalogue with the hope that it will soon find its way into every Sunday-school library in the land, and that it may stimulate thousands to a better life. Book John Wesley Classic Reprint

Download or read book John Wesley Classic Reprint written by James J. Ellis and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Wesley John Wesley has long since been admitted to the first rank of Christian heroism and service. His self-sacrifice, patience, courage, talents for administration, and, above all, the concentration of his powers upon what he considered the chief business of life, all mark him out as entitled to be placed in the van of the Christian host. The denomination that he founded is still the largest section of Protestant Dissenters, and not the least in self-sacrifice and devotion to the service of God and man. Those who are outside this community are the most ready to acknowledge their many obligations to the Methodists, to admire their fervour, and to thank God for them. This year commemorates the centenary of Wesley's entrance into heaven; it therefore furnishes a sufficient reason for re-studying his character and life. Book A Biographical History of the Wesley Family

Download or read book A Biographical History of the Wesley Family written by John Dove and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Biographical History of the Wesley Family: More Particularly Its Earlier Branches The eventful and important Life of the venerable Founder of Arminian Methodism has been frequently laid before the Public; but there is reason to believe that the history of his Paternal and Maternal Ancestors is only partially known, even amongst the members of the Methodist Society. The late Dr. Adam Clarke, published in 1822, "Memoirs of the Wesley Family" in a large octavo volume, but which, on account of the introduction of a vast quantity of extraneous and unnecessary matter, is not well adapted for general circulation. The Price also prevented many from purchasing it. On these grounds the Compiler of the following Work is of opinion, that a condensed, and well arranged Memoir of the Wesley Family, at a moderate price, and written "with special reference to general readers," was still wanting. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Wesley and the Methodist Societies IN my book on john Wesley and the Religious Societies I have traced Wesley's course until that Christmas Eve, in 1739, when he met a small company of earnest people whose supreme desire was to know how they might be saved from their sins.' I have been so much encouraged by the reception accorded to my book that I have been made bold to attempt a still more formidable task. I hope to be able to describe the work of Wesley down to the time of his death. In this volume I watch him as he lays the foundations of the Methodist Church. They were so carefully and securely laid that, up to the present time, they have determined the character of the building erected on them. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wesley's View of Entire Sanctification His opinion as to what constitutes Christian perfection underwent no change, although he had occasion to modify a few expressions in which he stated the doctrine. He saw clearly from this time that all grace, even in its highest de grees, is received by faith; andin this he never wavered. But he was weak in the faith, and a babe in Christ, as all young converts are. Doubts and fears crowded Upon him. He found it necessary to sit at the feet of those who had more perfect knowledge of the way of faith. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Wesley and Methodism Classic Reprint

Download or read book Wesley and Methodism Classic Reprint written by F. J. Snell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wesley and Methodism What has been attempted in the present work? Certainly, not a full and particular biography of John Wesley. He, it is true, is the central figure, and it is hoped that sufficient heed has been given to his personal actions and qualities to ensure a distinct, a recognisable, and - if only it might be! - vivid portrait of that king of men. But a full and particular biography would call for more pages than go to compose the entire work. On the other hand, the aim has been something other than to string together a scries of essays on various aspects of Methodism. While the writer has avoided Tyerman's method of strict chronological order -excellent though it is for some purposes-as involving broken lights and insecure perspective, he has striven to mark the stages of Methodist evolution by treating in successive chapters characteristics of the movement, as they assumed exceptional importance at successive periods of Wesley's life. Naturally, however, my first care has been to provide a fitting introduction for the man with whom tho movement is inseparably associated.
